Predator has just become an absolute classic in my eyes as it gets older. I find the film to be an absolute joy to watch and the score is damn near iconic. You can still hear bits of it today in John Debney’s ORVILLE scores and Silvestri’s recent THE WITCHES I'm definitely riding this train. PREDATOR has aged incredibly well and as I've grown to appreciate the film more in different ways as I've gotten older I've really come to admire what a brilliant balancing act Silvestri pulls off here in managing substance and tone. It's action, sci-fi, horror, suspense, and even a little drama rolled into one. Silvestri not only gives each its due but manages to mix them into a cohesive and entertaining-as-hell whole. Whether it's the best film he ever scored is hard to say in a filmography that includes BACK TO THE FUTURE, but it definitely deserves a seat at the table.

There's a notable absence of the earlier composers here, except for Herrmann and Steiner. Historical ignorance is always a factor in present company, but there are other reasons in play as well. The old masters scored so many good and bad films that their musical masterpieces don't always correlate with their best titles. The Rozsa choice is predictable, even if not everyone considers BEN-HUR his best film. I think a case can be made for three other composer choices: Korngold: THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD Newman: WUTHERING HEIGHTS Waxman: THE NUN'S STORY or SUNSET BOULEVARD While I don't claim to know much of Dmitri Shostakovich's film music, I suspect that HAMLET may deserve the prize. About Erich W. Korngold, if THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD is a better film than THE SEA HAWK, the latter may have a better score. LES MISÉRABLES may be the best score and film for Arthur Honegger, and LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE for Georges Auric, or maybe ORPHÉE. For Maurice Jaubert, I would say LE JOUR SE LÈVE.

The 13th Warrior is a fun B-movie, to say it's the best film Goldsmith ever scored is, well quite ludicrous That’s why “best” is subjective Of course. Nevertheless, the opinion that THE 13TH WARRIOR is a better film than CHINATOWN, PATTON, L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, UNDER FIRE, to name just a few, is, let's say, peculiar.
