Right, so let me ask the question otherwise...

Which other Jerry Goldsmith scores from 20th Century Fox could be released into these ongoing series ??

Could Jerry Goldsmith's scores for "Planet of the Apes" and "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" be paired in this collection ?

Even if they could arrange for it to happen, why would LLL choose to undercut sales of their amazing Planet of the Apes box set which is not yet sold out (just out of stock at the moment)?

Oh, I agree with you ! I don't expect POTA to be vol 5... Yavar, just a little question : how many 20th Century Fox Goldsmith titles are there ? How many volumes can we expect ?

This should help you both:
https://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33272-goldsmith-at-20th-new-series-of-releases-by-la-la-land/&do=findComment&comment=1762880

NOTE: This has not been updated to reflect Volumes 3 and 4.

Hard to predict how many volumes. Does LLL manage to pull off sub licensing The Other, Mephisto Waltz, and the two Flint scores from Varese, like they did successfully with Goldsmith’s two Planet of the Apes scores? I wouldn’t bet on it, as that seemed to be a one time deal for a special box set. For the same reason, I would not expect a reissue of Chain Reaction, which Varese owns in perpetuity and already expanded to complete form as a Deluxe Edition which is now OOP. But who knows; anything’s possible.

And LLL doesn’t seem to have a problem including things in this new series that have one, two, or even three releases before. They included The Blue Max because their prior edition has been out of print for long enough, and same with Tora Tora Tora… but on the other hand I doubt Rio Conchos or 100 Rifles would be included in this new series, as the great 2018 LLL twofer with both of them is still in print! So *maybe* if that sells out in the next year or two, but this Goldsmith at 20th series goes on for 5+ years or something? Okay…how about Goldsmith Fox titles released recently by say Intrada? Last year they released a dramatically remastered and slightly expanded edition of Morituri, as well as a premiere release for Take Her, She’s Mine. Morituri sold out earlier this year, while Take Her, She’s Mine was somewhat recently repressed and is still in print. Would LLL end up including either of those in their new Goldsmith at 20th series, if it continues long enough?

Another potential complication is original album rights. Alien and Patton are both Fox scores by Goldsmith, but for their definitive complete editions Intrada had to sub-license the original albums from Universal Music, who owns that catalogue now. Similar with Varese and the Deluxe Edition of Justine many years ago — just as with Patton, the unique original album recording (different from the Fox-owned film recording) had to be sub-licensed from UMG I’m pretty sure. Intrada still has Patton and Alien in print I’m pretty sure, so they’re probably off limits for this series. But what about Justine which has long been OOP? Would LLL expand the film recording (there are at least four cues missing from the Varese DE) for their new Goldsmith at 20th series, but leave off the UMG-owned unique album recording? I think it’s more likely Justine would be revisited by Intrada or LLL outside of this new Goldsmith at 20th series, so that both the complete film and album recordings can be included together, licensed from different entities.

What about LLL’s OOP expansions of The Edge, Sleeping with the Enemy, or Bad Girls — both Fox films, but would they end up revisited in this new series? See? Too many variables. But I hope the list of possibilities I linked to above helps whet your appetites.

Yavar

I guess Escape From L.A. will be identical to LLL's 2014 edition?

Yeah, did anything change? Even the liner notes?

I'm usually all for double-dipping but only if there is new stuff. However, for a film as bad as this was and music as silly as this was, I don'y even know if I could justify a double-dip if it's just artwork change.

Those are indeed Varese in perpetuity, not because of the Goldsmith at Fox box (which was a limited Club release) but because of the regular (available in stores) twofer release premiering the film recordings of both scores in the 90s:
https://www.discogs.com/Jerry-Goldsmith-In-Like-Flint-Our-Man-Flint-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtracks/release/462318

Same goes for The Mephisto Waltz and The Other, also released as a Fox twofer regular Varese release in the 90s. The Deluxe Editions of the Omen scores were also not limited Club titles, but regular Varese releases, so they all probably are off limits too, aside from the album recording of II. On the other hand Poltergeist II was given a regular release Varese DE but got expanded by Kritzerland and Intrada later so…

Yeah, the rerecorded albums now owned by & licensed from UMG & they sounded great. Two favourite LPs of mine from the sixties. The CDs were a long time coming, I was starting to think that the tapes were missing, & I'd have thought that they would have stayed in print longer. I have the original tracks of In Like Flint lifted from the music only track of the Twilight Time Blu-ray release (long deleted), it sounds great (although some tracks are damaged). Oh well, maybe one day they'll be released.

Sorry. Back to La-La Land October releases.

Maybe LaLa Land wouldn't view a POA/EFPOA as undercutting their box, since Intrada is doing the same thing with their To Kill a Mockingbird/Walk on the Wild Side release from their Ava box.

Intrada only did that after the AVA box sold out! And LLL would have to work out a new deal with Varese AND Fox (now Disney) to do the Goldsmith Apes scores on their own. Don’t hold your breath.

Actually, they didn't. As Rameu already indicated, they released the two unique soundtrack album recordings (quite a bit different from the film score recordings), owned by UMG (just like Justine and Patton's original album recordings). They didn't have to license anything from Fox or Varese for that release, because the actual film scores (i.e. the film recordings) were not included. I also acknowledged this in the JWFan post from the end of last year which I linked to in my post above:
https://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33272-goldsmith-at-20th-new-series-of-releases-by-la-la-land/page/2/&tab=comments#comment-1762880

"The more recent Intrada Flint twofer is of the unique album recordings. The Varese twofer from the 90s is only about half of each Flint score film recording; the Twilight Time Blu-ray features a full isolated music-only score track, but it replicates film micro-edits and actually omits some music present on the album. We need a true complete-as-recorded edition on CD, but album rights lie with Varese in perpetuity."

Love the Goldsmith Odyssey podcast!

Thanks!

I can only presume that Escape from LA is a straight re-issue of the score album from a few years ago. The synth/rock music from the first half of the album is quite good, though Walker's orchestral music is amazing (the groaning woodwind version of Snake's theme over pizzicato 1:19 into "Decapitation/Game Time/The Game" is especially noteworthy). Definitely worth getting if you haven't already.

GOLDSMITH AT 20th VOL. 4 – ACE ELI AND RODGER OF THE SKIES / TORA! TORA! TORA!: LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET)

Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 2000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $26.98

STARTS SHIPPING OCT 12

Order yours starting Oct 5 at 12 noon (pst) at www.lalalandrecords.com

La-La Land Records and 20th Century Studios proudly present a new collection of classic Jerry Goldsmith scores for film and television composed for 20th Century Fox: GOLDSMITH AT 20th Vol. IV – ACE ELI AND RODGER OF THE SKIES / TORA! TORA! TORA!. Bringing back out-of-print favorites while also debuting previously unreleased music, this collection will feature new authoritative liner notes and unified packaging sure to please avid collectors but also serve as a perfect gateway for listeners experiencing this music for the first time.

Volume IV showcases two more of the composer’s original feature film scores – this time from two ’70s aviation-themed dramas – 1973’s post WWI father-and-son-barnstorming story ACE ELI AND ROGER OF THE SKIES, starring Cliff Robertson and Eric Shea, and directed by JOHN ERMAN, and 1970’s TORA! TORA! TORA!, the Pearl Harbor docudrama starring Martin Balsam, Joseph Cotten, E.G. Marshall, So Yamamura and Tatsuya Mihashi, and directed by RICHARD FLEISCHER, KINJI FUKASAKU and TOSHIO MASUDA. While the films are only connected tangentially by the concept of aircraft and pilots, both scores on this 2-CD presentation explore wildly different sonic landscapes and emotions, and both soar as works of musical art.

ACE ELI presents two unique programs – The first is the original Goldsmith score in mono, in the film’s original sequence. The film was later recut and additional music was written with contributions from Alexander Courage. These cues, and the song “Who’s for Complainin’?” are presented in stereo alongside surviving stereo Goldsmith compositions in a sequence closer to the released version.

TORA! TORA! TORA! utilizes the same master as our previous release.

Both previously out-of-print scores return here with all-new art design by Jim Titus and new in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond. The reissue, limited to 2000 units, is produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, with ACE restored, mixed and mastered by Chris Malone and TORA mastered by Dan Hersch and Mike Matessino.

La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures present a 25th Anniversary re-issue of Shirley Walker & John Carpenter’s score to the 1996 Paramount Pictures futuristic actioner ESCAPE FROM L.A., starring Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi and Cliff Robertson, and directed by John Carpenter. When it came time to score his big-budget follow-up to the cult classic ESCAPE FROM N.Y., director/co-writer John Carpenter, who had inventively scored most of his films (HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA), collaborated with the ingenious Shirley Walker (BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, BATMAN MASK OF THE PHANTASM, WILLARD) to create the perfect musical soundscape for the further exploits of Snake Plissken. Building upon Carpenter’s iconic synth template, Walker harness her trademark orchestral power and the result is a full-charging heroic score that takes Plissken to new action-packed heights. Produced by Dan Goldwasser, this re-issue contains the same in -depth liner notes by writer Dan Schweiger and the same audio presentation as our initial expanded release, mastered by Doug Schwartz. This is a limited edition of 1500 Units.

This re-issue features new front cover art by Hugh Fleming.

I have never, ever, not once cared in the slightest, tiniest bit if two scores on separate CDs within a single double case are somehow related. Why in the world would I?

I do, if I have to shell out double the money when I only want one out of the two scores. I can't think of one case where I wanted both scores on a double release. I passed on the Batman/Batman Returns for this very reason. I however forked out the dough for the Jurassic Park 1 & 2 set though I only wanted the first score. If I known ten years later LLL would release Superman: The Movie as a stand alone release I would've never purchased the Blue Box which was a lot of money! In this case it looks like you get two scores for the price of one which is reasonable.
