I'm confused.
Got an email from DHL stating my cd of Zulu would be delivered today. But, at the bottom it says, held at Madrid until next pick up. So, if its still in Madrid, how is it going to get to me in rainy Lancashire before midnight.? I think there's an error somewhere.

Having had this on earphones I can say with delight that both the stereo and mono versions of the album tracks sound excellent.
The bonus track of previously unreleased score music, obviously from inferior sources, sounds unavoidably rough, but I'm assuming with confidence that's because of the source.
I really do think this is the best sounding release of this material to date, and with both stereo and mono versions on the same disv with bonus tracks, and Jon Burlingame's notes, it's the definitive package.

I was prepared to stick with the Silva Screen re-record, but since Stephen Woolston has given it a recommendation I'll spring for it.
Besides, that cool blue-green album cover is great. I just bought the Paramount blu-ray last year, and was marveling at how such a brief score can put a movie over the top...just like Lawrence of Arabia!
Roger Feigelson was entirely correct that the guttural but smooth low-brass that Barry excelled at, and that even came to the fore in King Kong, has not been properly reproduced by Non-Barry interpreters and engineering teams.

The more I listen to the Quartet Records samples, the more anticipation I get.
I've yet to be disappointed with any of Chris Malone's restorations.
By the way Stephen Woolston, is it known for certain that this score was recorded post-Goldfinger? It has a sound that's got a lot in common with that other brassy classic.

Recorded pre-Goldfinger. Within a month of From Russia With Love, I forget if it was just before or after. The liner notes list the recording dates.

Yes, it would have been pre-Goldfinger. I would venture that Zulu’s musical character and recording technique shares a lot in common with From Russia With Love.

I only wish whoever assembled the album originally had used the same take of "Rorke's Drift Threatened" that was used in the film.
Yes! Well spotted! The last 17 seconds of “Rorke’s Drift Threatened” are from a different take in the film. There’s an extra set of timpani hits in the film and that last part is also a little faster.
“Durnfold’s Horse Arrive And Depart” is also a different take.
Unfortunately, the raw takes were not able to be located, otherwise we definitely would have included them.

It is definitely pre-Goldfinger. I saw Zulu in Spring 1964, it had premiered in January 1964. Goldfinger was recorded in Summer 1964 and premiered in September 1964.

I know that the Zulu stamps have taken some hits here. Some work better than others, but I've always loved the original recording of "Monkey Feathers" with its very 60s cool guitar twang rendition of the Zulu theme. In fact, I heard this track before I was able to buy the soundtrack back in the 60s--and before i saw the film, so I didn't know that the cool theme was THE theme of the film. When I first saw Zulu on TV I was pleasantly surprised to hear the melody play virtually every time music was used. And just blown away by the power of the orchestral arrangements. So, hearing "Monkey Feathers" on this new CD for the first time in several years brought back many pleasant memories. Plus, it still sounds cool.
