Presumably he didn’t like the complete score spilling over to a second disc, which also included the original album program. In this case (as with Glory) I don’t think the complete score of Field of Dreams is long enough that it would even have to spill over onto the second disc.

Interesting.

I didn't think there was much missing from the original release and, even then, not enough to justify 2 CDs.

I wonder if this will be an expansion/original album situation or if there's a ton of alternates out there. FoD, save for the finale, was one of Horner's "write a few lines ahead, program/play synths live to picture" scores so there being several alternates is probably quite likely.

That sounds probable-A lot of the playing on the live sessions was kinda like jamming. There was no coherrent written score to follow in most parts. This was elaborated by Horner in the making of segment where the licensing studios were asking for the material afterwards and he didnt have much to send etc. Funny.

This is an excellent start to 2022, and an unexpected treasure.

I don't have Field of Dreams, so it'll be my first listen of the music. For me, this will even be a "new" Horner score, not a remaster or expansion. (Though of course I heard parts of it.) So it looks like I'll still be buying CDs in 2022.

So is this going to be Horner's debut in the Universal Pictures Film Music Heritage Collection? Or will it be a Darkman situation?
The Universal Heritage Collection was rebranded the Universal Classics collection last year, and "Two Mules For Sister Sara" is the only score in the entire series that had an original score album; The entire rest of the series are scores that are receiving their premiere release through the Heritage/Classics series.

Mike's done ton of expansions through Universal Pictures while this line has been ongoing (16 and counting), but none of them received the Heritage/Classics branding except "Two Mules"

Thanks for the clarification, Jason!

Much as I love Horner's score, and the current soundtrack is my 'one to rescue from the fire', I wonder if this will include the handful of songs that were used in the film but that weren't on the original soundtrack release?

Probably not.

It depends on what James Horner style score you enjoy.
It's not gonna be everybody's cuppa tea, with it's whispy keyboards/electronics and ambient drones, for a large part of the score.
Plus there's a 'light rock' theme (which I love) which is also off the beaten orchestral track.
Only in the last two cues does Horner really open up, as it where, with the orchestral fireworks.
Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic score and I love it, but I do remember being somewhat underwhelmed when I first heard it (and I've never cared that much for the film).
I'm keen to see how much new/alternate stuff is on there.

I think there will be several alternative tracks (but I may be wrong).

Why do I think this?
- In an interview James Horner talks about an alternative version with Irish colors of "The Library".
- In the interview with Phil Alden Robinson for the book, he tells that he asked for a new version of the second part of "Deciding To Build The Field"
- As some of you have already pointed out, Field of Dreams is part of the improvised scores on the picture in the presence of the director (except of course the orchestral parts).
- There may also be the single arranged by Jay Gruska (who I also interviewed for the book).

Glad to hear that the music accompanying Terence's 'people will come' scene (with the solo trumpet playing the theme) may finally be released. Could never understand why such a score highlight would be left off of the soundtrack.

Indeed, and Batteries was one of the silliest examples as, as far as I know, every single track on Disc 2 is a duplication from one on Disc 1.

Yes please, I would also like this with Field of Dreams for 2022. Thank you MV and LLL.

This and Brainstorm complete, that's all I want, then my Horner favourites collection will be complete. Still pinching myself that we got Glory expanded this year to join Apollo 13, Legends of the Fall etc.

I miss James Horner dearly, all the new music he would have created, but these definitive expanded editions of his great scores have been wonderful. Bravo and thanks always to those who have brought them to us.

Come on Varese, 2022 is surely the year to knock my socks off. Meanwhile, batter up ..

It is a good movie even though I don't like sports. The Minnesota Twins are so bad they've put me off of sports altogether, and to be honest I don't miss it at all.
