I just felt like posting in this thread to state again how ridiculously excited I am for these 2 volumes on Goldsmith, it is a literal dream come true to see these published books come to pass!

The book won't be a tell-all; where Goldsmith went on the record discussing his private life and where it impacted his scores you'll see a dash of that here and there but it's primarily about his projects. There will be music samples although fair use limits the scope of that to an extent. My goal was to touch on every major project that Goldsmith did which means all the theatrical films, every TV-movie and as many TV episodes as could be dug up and as much of his radio work as I could listen to. There are entire chapters devoted to some scores while others might get just a few paragraphs, and a lot of that is dependent on the amount of interview material available; there's a wealth of archival interview material as well as new interviews.

Thrilled for you, Jeff.

Bravo!

I don't think that this book will mention that Goldsmith went to high school with Marni Nixon, the singing voice of Audrey Hepburn in "My Fair Lady" and the wordless voice in Hugo Friedhofer's score for "Boy On A Dolphin" (she sang previously in The Roger Wagner Chorale in Friedhofer's Oscar nominated score for "Joan Of Arc"). Nixon mentioned this in her autobiography "I Could Have Sung All Night" (and oh yes, she was married to one film composer: Ernest Gold).

Very promising, many thanks for this huge project!

As (also) an admirer of Goldsmith, I am eager to read your 2 volumes. a booj on a major film composter is always an event. Here the addition is that the purpose is ambitious.

Still announced for this Summer?
Congrats.

Better be ten pages on THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY.

And ten pages on LOGAN'S RUN... and ten pages on THE CASSANDRA CROSSING... and on TOTAL RECALL... and on and on... smile

The publishers must have set a word limit...

There was no word limit. Jeff Bond set out to write the definitive overview of Goldsmith's music and career and inevitably delivered over 1,000 pages of material. Our only option was to break it into two volumes with the first covering 1951 to 1976, then the second detailing 1977 to 2003. Volume One has been proofread and is currently in the layout stage. Proofing on Volume Two is nearing completion with layouts scheduled for completion in June. The finished book covers were illustrated by artist Miles Teves and will be revealed at a later date, so stay tuned!

Will Volume 1 & 2 be published simultaneously, will they be available independently, and/or will they be sold in a slipcase?

I think they initially said that these 2 volumes will be published separately, they were still proofreading Vol 2 in June. I don't think there was any word about a slip case - is that really necessary?

Both books will be offered separately and as a deluxe set signed by the author. A slipcased edition with extras is also being considered. Pending photo and art clearances, we hope to have the books in hand for the fall season.

Good to know, thanks for the updates and I guess the slipcase indeed might be called for! smile

Any chance for an ebook edition?

I think I read somewhere how the two volumes were divided - the cut-off date for the first volume, and where Volume 2 picks up the story. Anyway, I can't find that info at the moment.

Why am I asking this? I see that Spanish (Catalán, from the name) author and artist Joan Bosch Hugas has two volumes out now on the life and career of Jerry Goldsmith. Volume 1 covers 1957 to 1979, Volume 2 covers 1980 to 2003. He had previously written a book on Miklós Rózsa.

I don't have the opportunity right now to look into this in more detail, but for the time being I'm just drawing it to your attention.

/EDITADO AUTOMÁTICAMENTE DESDE MI NAVE ESPACIAL/// graham watt ha añadido....//

I see now that my cormorants may read as if I was casting nastsurtiums over the possible illegitamacy or otherwise of los libros del señor Bosch. This was not my intention, and it's possible that I have come across once more as something of an ignoramus, or at least a nutmeg. I went to that dark dungeon which is Facebook, and there is the esteemed Sr Bosch Hugas in all his mature glory, surrounded by luminaries from the industry. He is also "friends" (Facebook friends - they're less real than blow-up dolls) of such important and reliable people as Mr Lukas Kendall. Thus, I retire my involuntary casting of imaginary nasturtiums. Still, interesting to know that these volumes have been published.

But back to the Bonds (no, not that silly secret agent from England, somewhere off the coast of Iceland), can someone remind me of the cut-off dates between the two volumes? Thanx!

The dates on Volume One are 1951 to 1976 and Volume Two is 1977 to 2003. We're aiming to make our official pre-order announcement in August.
