Of course she had to follow the modern-day template, otherwise she would have been fired and they would have just re-hired someone else to programme a score from their phone, but from the cues I've played so far, I quite like what I've been hearing...

I'm with you, Kev! It feels modern, yet also a throwback in some ways. I like it, and I'm honestly pretty interested to see the movie and appreciate the score in context...

It works well. Props to Schachner.

I really dig that it's ethnic sounding without being horribly cliche!

Badass cover! Anyone know if this is planned for a CD release?

Fingers crossed, as all the other scores in the series are on disc. As an aside, I am seeing "Prey" tonight at a screening at the Aero theater, in Santa Monica, with cast & crew Q&A - super excited!

How was that Q&A? I volunteer for the Aero and came so close to getting over there.

Also, this is the best movie released this week by a mile, and the best Predator movie that is not the original Predator by an even wider margin. Absolute crime this is not in theaters.

I enjoyed watching it at home without the distraction of other people talking, texting on their phones or being unmasked. I'm unhappy with Hulu, for streaming this in the US in SDR and 5.1 only. In other countries it's on Disney+ in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

I see that lots of people over at Empire Magazine`s Facebook Discussion board have started to review it and most of them does think it is a terrible film and even some of them thought it was a terrible score. I have not yet seen it myself but I am looking forward to watch it even if they at that forum more or less hate it.

Watched it on Disney+ and really liked it. Best Predator movie after the original for me.
Score was great and worked well in the film as well - will have to check it out on its own.

I watched it last night and thought it was... not very good (I'm being diplomatic).
I found it dull and uninvolving.
And I know it's fantasy/sci-fi but it strained credulity even for this series.
I also found the pacing and editing off and confusing at times, with some sub-par CGI (the CGI rendered animals are terrible).
I'm not a huge fan of the series overall, having loved the original, thought the second one was decent and remember quite liking the one on another planet with Adrian Brody.
The rest have been mainly garbage with the odd good moment or two.
I didn't find much in this one to set it apart from the other, lesser efforts in the series.
I did like the score in those moments it sounded like Carter Burwell doing Last Of The Mohicans (the tracks I've linked above) but found the modern tribal/percussion sound as nondescript as the film and its characters.
I really hoped to like this film too.

I get it. frown

Just now listened to the sound samples, I quite like them. Reminds me a bit of "The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance" but its not the same composer.

I enjoyed this film and the score.

I like the originality in the predator, its effects, and more of the "First one on planet earth" aspects.
LOVED how much detail went into the natives costuming, casting, and overall look of the village. The same goes for the French rendezvous. I had a chuckle after the first volley is shot as a group. Those that have seen it will know, as I don't want to spoil the film.

Kev said a few things that I agree with. One being a couple for the sub-par CGI effects, especially with animals. Hollywood hasn't arrived at that stage where it's really 100% believable. Also, there is the piece of music that is reminiscent of Last of the Mohican. I would not agree that the film was "garbage"

As an older person (60) I didn't care for some of the "Parkour" aspects of native fighting, but I understand they throw that in for the younger hip crowd that loves that sort of thing.

Overall, I gave it a 95% out of the 100 and it goes down as the 2nd best Predator film (for me) made to date.

Your mileage may vary wink

I came here to mention exactly the same thing! I went into the movie not knowing who was scoring it, but when I heard a particular cue, I figured it *must* have been Daniel Pemberton, as I'm a huge fan of his Dark Crystal Age of Resistance scores, and one of the cues in particular sounded almost identical (even the instrumentation perhaps?).
Having said that, I did quite enjoy the score to Prey.

And as for the movie; for my money, it was easily the second-best entry in the series, after the original. I loved the pacing, the look, the violence, the sparseness of dialogue. I was actually afraid for the characters as the action ramped up.
The only thing I found mildly disappointing were the special effects, which I was rather shocked to see ILM involved with. And it wasn't just the animal effects (which, as others have noted, were a little naff), but I found some of the predator effects to be a little on the weak side as well. I've always found this part to the be the weakest of the original movie as well, but figured that by now, they'd have perfected a lot of this stuff. This may have been down to a reduced budget, who knows?

At any rare, it is a huge disappointment that this didn't get a proper cinema release, as it more than deserved it and would have been great to see play out on the big screen.

I enjoyed the movie and I thought the music was perfect for the film. I thought the effects were good and served the story.
But the most notable thing for me was that it took itself seriously. It's refreshing to watch an action movie in this day and age that doesn't rely on silly, smart ass dialogue every 2 seconds.

I think your first error here was taking people on Facebook seriously. It is a horrid place packed with negativity and animosity and often worse.

Yesterday I watched Prey in the Comanche dub! I really liked my time with the movie and did something weird in my watch that might've impacted that. I pulled a silly move and neglected to turn the English subtitles on. The beginning of the movie is largely just non-verbal action unfolding so I just sat back and enjoyed the events and details. When Naru began speaking to her peers and family I just let it play out, being invested in the visual language and not thinking twice. Good storytelling doesn't always need me to understand the dialogue or story (and this story is a very simple one, to its benefit). I checked out the subtitles somewhat through and caught that they were hearing-imparied subtitles which I'm not crazy about given the amount of text on screen at every moment (I certainly understand why these subtitles are good for many people). I turned them back on when the French colonizers came into the story but for the most part they speak in French which is not subtitled since Naru doesn't understand them.

Anyway, a very good little movie. A return to form for this franchise. Great music score which I am listening to now, mostly on repeat. And a great experience just watching it as a visual story that was quite easy to follow even if I don't understand the Comanche language. My only qualm with my haphazard approach to watching it was that the dub readings don't necessarily reflect the tone or inflection of individual moments; particularly those that are stressful or emotional for the lead. So some scenes I went back to watch in the original sound mix.

One of my favorite through-lines for the story is the depictions of predators (not just the visiting alien) and their prey. Even the environment. And how the repetitious cycle works. And how Naru uses that as her advantage over the Feral yautja in the finale. Kudos to the team for a tight script.

Excellent observation! I had forgetting about that thematic throughline but it does standout more upon reflection!

We watched the movie last night and really enjoyed it.

Easily the best in the franchise since the first film even though I do have a soft spot for Predator 2 . The music worked great in the film, but didn't really grab me enough to purchase the download. That's just due to my preferences, not any failing on the composer's part.

Well said. I felt the same. I think it’s very well done for the movie but not sure it would be something I’d listen to apart. I don’t know if a melodic or overt score would have worked with the tone of this new film. Props to Schachner. She did very well on this.

Absolutely. I too LOVE Predator 2 and really enjoy the underrated Predators.

As for the score to Prey... I found it to be… adequate but that’s about it. It did it’s job but nothing much else. I understood Schachner's approach to the subject manner but besides some ok melodic ideas and the integration of indigenous instrumentation the rest felt like typical flat modern action scoring. The score didn’t really enhance the film for me, which, IMO, is what the film desperately deserved. All the other scores in the series did one thing that this score didn't... and that was elevate the power of the Predator. The Predator gained a great deal of weight and strength in the original film because of Silvestri's massive score, which also helped make him one of the most terrifying "bad guys" to ever appear on film and helped make the character iconic! I think Schachner completely missed the boat on that aspect of the score.

Like most scores these days, there's like one, maybe two highlight cues and then 100 minutes of total filler that could have been composed by any of us. I'd love to have someone point out all the uses of Silvestri's theme because I didn't hear it at all.
