I agree to the extent of what others here have said about not taking this stuff too seriously. Do I lose sleep over how his music is titled? Nope. Do I dwell on it long after I've listened to the music? Of course not. Does it result in my not purchasing or listening to new music by the composer? No; however, my lukewarm feelings to much of his work contributes sufficiently to that.

I don't begrudge others admiring his acumen when it comes to titling his work. And I know others have expressed a disdain for the way John Williams labels his work. But can you imagine Williams taking the same approach and applying silly names to his music? I can't help but think that if he were to do that it would diminish, in the eyes of his peers and fans, what he has accomplished.

Puns in track titles just come across as really lame. A literal laughing-at-your-own-joke level of lame. I can just imagine Giacchino sitting there, giggling to himself as he comes up with yet another pun.

Puns in track titles are even worse than exclamation marks in writing.

There there are the one word titles Zimmer assigned to Dark Phoenix.

Gap
Dark
Frameshift
Amity

Boooring.

I do rather prefer bald, basic Bernard Herrmann-style track titles like The Car, The Murder, The House etc.

You left out "Nocturne."

He (or his team) made a Simpsons reference in the STAR TREK BEYOND cue titles, so I am, and will forever remain, pro-pun.

"The Dreaded Rear Admiral". That was a good one.

Too bad he didn't score "Schindler's List" or "Saving Private Ryan".
My mind boggles at the comedy genius possibilities.

"How much does the Holocaust?" is the least offensive I could come up with...

Just today, I realised a cue in JURASSIC WORLD is called "The Brockway Monorail" as well.

I hate the damn things too.

What bothers me most, besides the fact they are so often not remotely funny, is that more often than not, they are strained to the breaking point to even have a passing resemblance to a pun.

"Zoodanga Happened" from JOHN CARTER? I can tell they are trying for something but it's so lame it doesn't gel.

I like the cue titles to give me some idea of what is happening in the film during the cue. Giacchino's titles fail that test miserably.

They don't bother me much, some are funny, some not so much. I do prefer a track title that more refers to the film scene it supports , but it's not a big deal. The Outrage over it is kinda...ridiculous. But then, most of the Outrage seen around here is wink

I haven't seen any real outrage in this thread. Just some folks expressing disdain for unfunny puns.

The Sun newspaper has been producing similar tripe every day for years. Every story has the same kind of nonsense headline. Scroll through some of these:

"You Bet Your Asteroid, Kid"

[formerly know as "The Asteroid Field" / TESB (1980)]

* John Williams would like to give special thanks to "Hardware Wars" (1978)
