Good job! I loved the use of Darla and Angel themes!

The Darla theme is one of my favorites! So mysterious and sad at the same time.

Those two themes are my favorite from Angel (so far, still two seasons to go). Sadly the Angel theme didn't survive the Composer change in S2. Would've loved to hear more from it.

It actually does appear a few times. I remember at least one scene from season 2. An action version. But dont remember the episode! lol! But yes, wish it was used more by Kral

I proudly present my rescore for the Pilot two-parter completely edited into the Episodes. I still used Stereo files and center-channel extraction because I'm too stupid to find the 5.1 Mixes but I found a way to make the extraction sound better. It should work as long you don't listen with Headphones. mostly.

Because the music is here and there really upfront in the mix (to hide the extraction artefacts) and therefore overshadows the Dialog english subtitles are added.

There are still a few spots where I kept Murphis score in. Mostly because my cue already ended while his hasn't. The Harvest at 16:34 for example. Also the 5 second long cue when Xander sees Buffy for the first time (1x01 at 5:14) which is so unnecessary that I wasn't even bothered to rescore it.

For the Video I used the HD Remaster but added a tiny bit of noise/filmgrain and completely changed the colorgrading back to the original DVD versions. Gone are the pinks, brightness and the overly smooth and fake looking everything.

Here they are:

Added "Witch". While preparing 1x03 for the final master Adobe Premiere crashed out of nowhere and all progress on the color correction was lost. Not a huge loss but I had'nt the motivation to do it all again so I used a fan-made 1080p upscale of the DVD versions. Boy do they look good... I will use this upscale for episodes 1-7 (my edits on 1x01&1x02 remain available) and the official HD remaster for 8-12 because those episodes actually opened up the frame and didn't crop the 4:3 image down.

Here's the complete Rescore from the brilliant episode "I, Robot... You, Jane". This one is probably the closest to Murphy's original score due to the heavy reliance on synths. I'm jacked in. But there are some new motifs: 2 Ostinato's, 2 simple chord-progression all for moloch, a sort of love theme for Willow and Malcolm and the Magic/Ritual theme from 1x02/03 Returns.

The Moloch is splitted into three phases over the episode
1. Analog, Alife and in the Book
2. Digital and across the WWW.
3. Resurrected into a physical but robotic and digital form
All these phases are represented musically by using the traditional orchestra for 1, a lot of synths for 2 and processed brass + synths for 3. The same applies to the Magic theme being 'digitized' when Giles and Jenny perform the ritual inside the computer. Did I just wrote that?

Look.. this episode sucks. Scoring "Teacher's Pet" was not that much fun (still was but compared to the better Episodes) but "Teacher's Pet" only needed 16 minutes of music. Then pain was over fast. I'm jacked in. This amazingly brilliant piece of well written and well acted entertainment media requires 27 minutes. Twenty-Seven. And... like 9 minutes are boring synth noise that isn't really track-able because each scene has a different tempo and sync points... Uh.. and there's a moment in the final showdown where Willow... uhm... takes.. control.. so I adapted that S5 cue by Wander. It's just two chords. Two chords that I used since 1x01 because they're cool.

Here's the Episode if you want to suffer through it:

wow, thats a really great track!

Thanks. I think it's a bit too much in the actual episode and...

smile

But you can still hear the dialogue... hopefully... This cue "Buffy Prepares" was planned to be a recreation of the montage cue from Angel's "Somnanbulist" but I could n't think of a logical in-universe reason why this cue should be there. But the finished cue is still inspired by it.

and here it is: The rescore of Episode 1x07: "Angel". Probably good that I waited this long because I bought the Angel score album recently and discovered some cues that I adapded into this rescore. So you're not only going to hear endless repetitions of Kral's theme for Darla, but also a few more cues I don't want to spoil. There are also a lot of cues adapted from Buffy Season 2 that I also don't want to spoil. Let me put it this way: This one's a treat from the very first second to the very last.

Along with themes by Beck and Kral, my own mysterious Angel motif makes numerous returns as well with more variations than in previous scores.

The complete score, edited into the episode is on my website, the score only download has to wait until tomorrow because with this score beeing now completed the second OST Volume is ready to be assambled.

Here the link to the Episode*:
https://sites.google.com/view/davidmuellercomposer/rescores/buffy-the-vampire-slayer/1x07-angel

*The recap is in 16:9 because I couln't find an upscaled 4:3 Version. The Full episode is in 4:3 though. The timestamps for the themes and motifs will be added soon. And it's funnier for you to discovering them for yourself while watching.

Awesome! cant wait to check it out! Saw the intro and could already recognize the B/A love theme and the Buffy main theme! Good job!

And I absolutely love Kral's Darla theme!!

Here's the complete score from 1x07: "Angel". Cue 7M10 is missing. That was the cue "Buffy, Boys And History" and would've played during the scene with Darla in the library while Willow helps Buffy studying. After rewatching I thought this scene works better -like in the original version- without any score.

Buffy and Angel's first kiss happens in this episode. And I already have a recreation if their last kiss, so took the easy route and adapted that one for the most part. I thought it would be nice if those scenes mirror musically.

And there's the Song "I'll Remember You" at the end of the episode. The lyrics even contain similar lines like "I hear your heartbeat" and "your eyes [...] now are they closed". Great Song. Perfectly fitting. Head to throw in a bit of Christophe Beck magic.

I really must applaude you for this!
Amazing job! Love all those familiar themes from both shows you use! "The Kiss" gave me chills!
And really interesting what you did with the song! So clever!

There is a really nice version of Darla's theme + another theme which is used in both season 1,2 and 4 at the end of The Prodigal (1x15). It starts of with Darla theme (one of the first times we hear it?), continues to the "mystery" theme (I call it mystery cause I dont know what theme it is) and ends with some amazing vocals!
Really wish this was featured in the album! I asked Kral about it, and he had totally forgotten about it, and said that he now regrets not including it on the OST. The mystery theme also appears in a montage of Somnambulist (episode 1x11) when Kate is studying Angels past. And again in a season 2 scene in a sad and dark version (I cant remember which episode). And in a season 4 scene. Have you noticed this theme while watching?

Wow. Thank you! "The Kiss" was my number one reason to make this rescore of S1 in the first place. Glad you liked it. And the song was a totally random thought I had after I already uploaded the finished episode, which caused the delay from sunday to monday.

Between only Song without additional B/A theme and nuking the Song to put an entirely new arrangement of the B/A theme there (which was my initial intent) this turned out to be a good compromise.

This is the cue I meant here:

But to be sure, we're talking the Katie studys/Hawkeye Plots/Angel Walks montage from 1x11 at ~30:00 here aren't we? If yes, Yes I noticed it. Musically my favorite 66 Seconds from Angel so far (shame on me, I'm still not past S3).
I bought the Angel score CD for that cue actually since it's had to be there. On this day my disappointment was immeasurable and my day was ruined until the Darla stuff began to play.

Ah yes of course! Thats the theme you actually mentioned! (I wasnt aware of the episode title when you posted about it and confused it with another scene big grin ). Exactly! And then it also appears again in The Prodigal (along with Darla's theme, same cue). Once in season two, I believe its after that very long talk Angel have in the elevator with that man (I dont quite remember who that man was or the episode, I SO need to rewatch this show!) and he goes for a walk in the streets or something. I think its like a piano version of it. And it also appears in a season 4 episode but I wont spoil the scene wink

Really need that theme some day! A shame LLL never got to release that Angel box they started working on!
According to Kral it was a 5 CD box! (but I think he might have been wrong and that it was "just" 4 CDs like the Buffy box). I asked Christophe Beck once and he thought the Angel box was already released cause he had been asked about it a couple of years ago and sent over some of his stuff from the show for release. He told me to google it, lol!

I'm not that active on twitter, but didn't Kral said something about trying it again this or next year? 5CDs sound good smile I'd suggest if we ever get a Buffy Volume 2 it should be a 7CD set smile

yeah he did say something like that as well. But according to LLL it sadly wont happen. At least not in the near future.
Despite that, I always hope for Black Friday release of it every year! big grin haha!

7 CDs would be amazing!!

Btw, just checked Kral's page. Not much Angel unreleased tracks there sadly... but under the section Heartfelt / Tender, there's a track called "Prayer for the Innocent" and the intro to the song actually has a hint of that theme we talked about! :O

The next Episode is finished. And it was luckily not a Nightmare to score it (looking at you, Teacher's Pet & I Robot something). With my limited hardware and software it was tricky to get the unique musical styles (Vampires, Clown, Spiders, History Test, Lucky 19, Lovely Dad Talk etc...) all in one template and I had to use entirely different String Samples but it worked quite well in the end.

This episode is like "I, Robot... You, Jane" presented in both 4:3 and 16:9.

Happy New Year. Here's "The Puppet Show".

I must admit that while the choice of instruments was made back in 2022 I had no idea what genre this score will be. I think I intended something similar like "The Pack"... well... it ended up being not like "The Pack". It's more James Bond, Murray Gold's Doctor Who and Star Trek TOS smashed together. To the extreme that I had to make versions without the drumset and brass just because it was too much here and there.

This rescore features a Clarinet and a Bassclarinet, both played by myself. I wanted to have both instruments in more cues but the more I play the more my neighbours will hate me so I kept it to a minimum.

This episode is presented in both 4:3 and 16:9.

5.1 MIXES HERE I COME!

The center channel is completely score free! Couldn't be better!

Gimme a week or so... 10 Episodes need to be remastered

 By:   DaveM   (Member)

My motivation of remastering the episodes got replaced by the excitement of finally be able to listen to some unreleased cues... So I did not remaster all the episodes yet. But everything should sound much better now. There's still a transition because I use all 5 channels in unscored scenes but it's much less noticeable than the centerchannel extraction. Besides the episode mix, all the complete scores will also be remastered.

So far finished (episode and score) (I will update this post)
1x01 Welcome To The Hellmouth
1x02 The Harvest
1x03 Witch
1x04 Teacher's Pet
1x05 Never Kill A Boy On The First Date
1x06 The Pack
1x07 Angel
1x08 I, Robot... You, Jane
1x09 The Puppet Show
1x10 Nightmares
1x11 Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight
1x12 Prophecy Girl

Glad you finally found the versions with 5.1 audio! It was a dream come true being able to listen to all the unreleased score! And luckily the score is quite isolated in the channels. Specially the talking/calm scenes with no fighting. It almost sounds like an official release! The Murphy and Beck episodes has good quality audio score when isolated. But Wanker and Duncan episodes is not bad but they sound like they are mixed with lower quality score or something. But its the Beck episodes which was the most important to me any way wink
