I wonder if the soundtrack album feature both Desplat and songs or will there be separate platters, given Dua Lipa (Mermaid Barbie) is a Warner Bros. recording artist.

It's a riot that the take "Marvel movie audience is majority male" is such a controversial concept for Solium.

The audience of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is majority male. Here's a study which backs up that statement: https://morningconsult.com/2021/12/06/is-gen-z-too-cool-for-marvel/. More specifically, the majority of the MCU's audience consists of white, male millenials.

However, 'male' does not necessarily mean 'masculine'. Many of those white, male millenials are children with adult bodies. They look like adults, but mentally speaking they never developed into adults. (Imagine a grown man keeping up with all the superhero movies that are being churned out!) They base their entire personalities on reboots of shows they grew up with. Since they eat unhealthful processed foods and never get any exercise, many of them have a low amount of testosterone and are thus no better than impotent women.

So even if there are more males than females watching Marvel movies, it doesn't really matter, because most of the audience is feminine anyway. big grin

It's the same thing with Star Wars, by the way. It's no surprise that there's a large overlap between the two fanbases. This is what the average MCU fan is like:

I will agree that people obsessed with MCU and Star Wars as adults are suffering some sort of arrested development. I still collect Marvel Comics action figures (and other favorite characters from other media) and I recognize it in myself but I don't make it precious and in the end it is just a fun hobby for my own enlightenment.

From the trailer, it seems like the joke is that everything is completely on the surface, all the women are named Barbie and the men named Ken, they have perfect skin and awesome convertibles… but how does that generate more than a sketch? Does this make it the ""MCU for the ladies [who are not my two friends]"?

I can't answer the MCU question (or even, necessarily, the other question) but the plot details that have been released so far are that she's expelled from Barbieland into the real world for having "imperfections." With Gerwig involved I imagine that will make it rich soil for planting satire and subversion.

My first thought when I heard about this movie was Ewwwww. However, now that I know Gerwig is directing, I’m thinking it might be interesting. I’m thinking it will be a scathing satire, but I could be wrong.

The first Barbie doll came out in 1959. The first one looks like a brunette, but I think the blonde, blue-eyed Barbie dolls were the most popular. Ken doll came out in 1961. He was blonde, tan and perfect just liked Barbie. The first Black Barbie was introduced in 1980. An Asian doll and dolls of the world came out the next year.

The blonde perfect Barbie became kind of an icon, the perfection of beauty in face and body. (Probably same with Ken.) Well, the reality was and is that most females cannot attain her perfection. Ken also may have had that effect on males. I think these models may have led to the rise of dieting and certainly plastic surgery.

Minorities could not look like blonde Barbie, but minority Barbies still had the perfect figures.

I refused to get my twin daughters Barbie dolls, but my mother-in-law bought both of them blonde Barbies. My mother-in-law wanted to sew them lots of Barbie clothes. Yes, there are clothing patterns for both Ken and Barbie dolls. My daughters kind of lost interest in those dolls after a few years.

I just can’t figure out what Gerwig will do with the plot. I am just guessing that she’ll go after the “perfection effect” engendered by this phenomenon. (Mike Esss, just saw your post. Sounds like a good plot.)

I loved Gerwig’s LITTLE WOMEN and Desplat’s score. Can’t help but wonder what he will do for this movie.

P.S. I love MCU, but none of my female friends will go to those movies.

Do Gen X's, Gen Z's or Millennials, even get the 2001 parody? Weird way to market this particular film.

"Will these people, with all of their unlimited access to all forms of media and pop culture understand references to one of the most iconic films of all time?" you're serious????? This is one of the dumbest takes I've seen in a minute. Step away from your desktop, pappy.

I felt the same...dismissed the movie at first...until I heard Gerwig was directing - very curious to see where she is taking this...the trailer looks promising.

If so, great! There is certainly plenty of opportunity for all sorts of satire.

But I guess I'm dubious because I wonder how willing Mattel is to skewer their biggest brand. The CG Barbie films (while largely invisible to many of us) is one of the highest grossing media franchises of all time, and obviously the dolls and accessories are wildly profitable. They famously wouldn't allow Barbie in the first Toy Story (though they relented for the sequels, where there was some fun, light-hearted parody allowed).

Maybe Mattel will turn out to have a great sense of humor about all this. I guess we'll see.

Is it? When the trailer premiered, I asked the twenty-somethings in my office, and exactly half (three of six) got the 2001 parody. The other half were mystified. (Granted, the margin-of-error on a sampling size of six is probably through the roof. Still…)

I mean, even if you haven't seen 2001, there's been enough parodies and references in pop culture that you're still likely to recognise it.

I haven't seen the GODFATHER films, but I can pretty much piece them together through SIMPSONS references.

How dare they desecrate '2001: A Space Odyssey' and, by extension, Richard Strauss's music.

Ha!

Also, watch (two-thirds of) the Godfather films!

Not while I have the option of watching PIRANHA II: FLYING KILLERS.

And I keep a copy of that on my phone, so that option's pretty much always available.

If the 2001 reference often appears on tik tok they’ll get it. If not… well…

I think this movie will be great. The concept is really clever and funny it seems. It might either be a total disaster or a blockbuster. My guesses, it'll be the later one, `cause it has a lot of hype already.

And there will be a song compilation album released, probably makes a release of Desplat's score less likely

Sure, if it was some no-name loser who didn’t have two Academy Awards scoring this movie, but thankfully, Greta Gerwig didn’t hire him.

WaterTower Music is expected to release a separate soundtrack featuring the film’s original score.
