There is no "original Peter Pan musical" to start with when it comes to the songs written for HOOK. Or at least, not in the way you probably have thought or known so far.

Maybe not. All I know is what's been written in Spielberg books over the years -- an aborted Peter Pan musical that was turned into what eventually became HOOK instead (the short version of it). I'd be interested to know more details.

There is a large amount of incorrect information and even urban legend (mostly based on fans' speculation, but also a few odd remarks from the artists themselves) that has circulated for decades about the Peter Pan project Spielberg announced in 1985, but also a lot of wrong assumptions about how Hook and its score came together. As I said, pretty much the whole story will be told soon, but the desire of the producers of this new release right now is letting people discover the whole thing and enjoy the embarrassment of riches it offers. There will come the time for going into the nitty-gritty of everything smile

I bought the initial LLL release when it first came out (it and The Robe were the first LLL albums I ever bought) and have loved every minute of it. However, I have ordered this new edition and looking forward to it.

Cool.

Wow, fantastic news. Was not expecting the songs to be included. I would have been happy enough with a remaster. Thanks LLL for bringing back the GOAT Williams score. This should always be in print. I’m guessing there will be some who will regret not double dipping.

Great release and wonderful to hear - at last - the Julie Andrews performance of Childhood. The story behind the making of the recording of the song is kind of fascinating, thanks to Leslie Bricusse.

A good example is "Banning Back Home". The version that I have from the set that was included on Disc 1 is 2m 23s, and neither version on the new set matches it (I'm thinking this was an album version, and they've since found an original version...??).

"Banning Back Home" was edited for the original soundtrack album, and that edited version re-appeared on the 2012 LLL edition.

"Banning Back Home (Extended Version)" is the same composition, now premiering unedited for the first time in 32 years.

"Banning Back Home (Film Version)" is a revised version that was recorded later, and replaced the original composition entirely in the final film.

Can Mike - or anyone - confirm the source(s) for this release compared to the previous "less than great" 2CD?

Every bit of it transferred from analog scoring masters with the exception of two song demos from DAT tape.

I will always remember from my university days, when the Rhino 2-CD Superman came out, Mike Matessino was asked in an interview if he had any dream John Williams projects, and he said he'd like to get his hands on Hook. 25 years was well worth the wait. While I am ecstatic over any JW expanded release, this is probably my all time holy grail of holy grails. Can't wait to listen!

"Banning Back Home" was edited for the original soundtrack album, and that edited version re-appeared on the 2012 LLL edition. "Banning Back Home (Extended Version)" is the unedited version.

"Banning Back Home (Film Version)" is a rewritten and re-recorded version of the cue that got used in the film.

So basically the 2012 LLL version would be considered a third version of the track that I should keep, but chances are that I won't because I'd rather a remastered unedited version anyway.

Thank you for clarifying that. It's very much appreciated!

Do you really something that's simply truncated like that?

Well that's why the rest of the sentence was "but chances are that I won't because I'd rather a remastered unedited version anyway."

It's still early to reveal all the backstory and all the insight about the music and how this release has come together, but everything (and I mean *everything*) will be revealed at some point. The liner notes will have already a general account of all this, but for a proper deep dive about everything HOOK check on The Legacy of John Williams soon smile

These "Legacy Of John Williams" podcasts are, for me, as highly anticipated as the CD releases themselves.

It would be greatly appreciated if those who get this release can do a comparison on the sonic upgrade with the two-disc release. Currently sitting on the fence on this one.

Mine will likely take some time to get here since I'm on the East side, but I ordered it the moment it became available and I'll have the original La-La Land release ready for that very comparison.

Is it weird I still keep the old music in my ripped library even when I get newer ones? I still have La-La Land's 2-Disc set AND their Danny Elfman Collection remastered version and I compare those two all the time. That and Die-Hard.

Not odd for Batman 89. I prefer the mix of the earlier release for the Main Titles with the aggressive snare drums.
