While Gladiator is a decent score by Zimmer and the first track is amazing, Kingdom of Heaven and The Last Duel blow it out of the water! Yay for Harry Gregson-Williams!
By decent, you mean one of the most iconic, popular, and best scores of all time? Yeah I agree.
I like the look of the trailer but Paul Mescal fails to convince me. From the trailer it seems he lacks charisma. I do hope his presence in the movie will be much more powerful. HGW is a hit-and-miss composer for me but I'm curious what he will come up with.
What were they thinking with that rap music? Are they that desperate to attract the kiddies? It looks like an expensive film and I get it that they want to make their money back, but still.
Anyone remember the original film's teaser trailer which used music from Conan The Barbarian? Those were the days...
I remember the first trailer for Gladiator when it used Conan music. It fit.
I liked this new trailer except for the horrid music. Film score music is great for recall. I was sure Zimmer's main theme would be in this trailer for recall purposes. Sadly, I was wrong.

I also was assuming that we'd hear some of Zimmer's music in this trailer, but I understand why this wasn't done. The original GLADIATOR came out 24 years ago and there's an entire generation of people who have no knowledge of it. For example, my girlfriend just turned 30 last month and has not seen the original movie. This sequel caught her attention due to two things - the two male leads and the old Kanye song heard in this trailer. So the advertising team might know what they're doing in this instance...

I think they tried the same thing with Napoleon and that didn’t do to well. Tacking on a pop song or rap song is in vogue right now but it doesn’t guarantee an audience. It’s really very lazy advertising. I cannot believe advertising agencies get paid millions just to copy one another.

Tracking in a pop or rap song into a trailer has been in vogue for going on 15 years, so it isn't anything new. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If it didn't work enough of the time, then ad agencies and trailer houses would stop using these tracks, but obviously it makes the client (i.e. studios) happy. The difficulty is getting those under 40 to have any connection or care about movies or franchises that haven't been relevant in 20+ years. It happened with Blade Runner 2049 - 30 years since the original and WB greatly overestimated the general audience's knowledge and/or affection for it. GLADIATOR 2 has a big hill to climb as far as feeling relevant again to the same under 40 crowd.

Indeed and I understand, I guess I meant this style of advertising has been in overdrive since Guardians of the Galaxy so successful intertwined rock music with the film. But you have me shuddering at the thought of the next Star Wars movie having rap music in the trailers.
I had reservations about this and then I watched the trailer and read the brief synopsis of the film and I ask myself was this sequel really necessary!

It's so sad to see how far we've fallen.
Absolutely! The power of great orchestral writing when it works with the image is undeniable and I think would get people of any age excited about a good film. But no advertising company would be given free reign to try something like that. Trailers have been the worst part of movies for 20+ yrs...so many lost opportunities to actually emotionally involve audiences and get them thrilled about an upcoming movie.

Tom, my friend, I'm going to respectfully disagree with you. I still hear Ecstasy of Gold played on advertisements and at sports venues. Now that is very old.
I have heard Zimmer's main theme from Gladiator played at many sporting events. I think many people are familiar with it. Maybe not the very young, but others have heard it. Also, this movie has been a staple on TV for many years. I can still go in and watch it as can others.
Even if some don't know Zimmer's main theme, it is a wonderful theme that would fit the trailer.
Finally, I can't help but wonder why some of our members hope this will fail? I think it will draw a crowd to the theaters, at least I hope so.
I don't think the use of the song was for historical accuracy, but to entice people into seeing the movie...and on that note, it succeeded. Can't wait.

I work at the World Series of Poker. They play Ecstasy of Gold (albeit a remix) basically every day for the main morning event as the players come in.
I think being shocked that a trailer uses a popular song in 2024 is like being shocked that a score is made available but not on CD, or that there's a new movie based on a comic book, or that people watch e-sports on television. Can't we simply accept that the studios' research tells them that other people like things that a lot of us don't?
