Was about to buy it but got a bit confused regards taxes- I live in the UK and could see the price of the book and the shipping but where do we add the tax even if we know how much it is? Anybody else worked it out?

At over $100 USD per volume, I can't possibly do this, but I hope everyone who can really gets some insight. This looks like an amazing tribute of a composer wo really impacted my life

At the price I think I'll stick with what I already know about the man.

Very expensive indeed....but this looks rather impressive and very professional.

So I just ordered Volume I (in french for a change) as it includes James Horner 1978>1987 years, my favorite of his.

My ususal question: Any chance for an epub version? I simply find it so much more convenient...

The "FAQ" section at https://jameshornerbiographybook.com/ speaks to this:

There’s no digital version?

There’s no digital version, no black and white version.
I’m offering you the most beautiful object possible.
I see it as a visual, emotional and cognitive experience that deserves to be held in your hands.

I understand this concept entirely. Just my viewpoint, but Horner fans already purchase the limited edition CD reissues, so to me if you're a fan and collector, a physical book is a wonderful format to enjoy this monumental, labor-of-love item in.

I've been looking forward to this for a very long time and I even support Jean-Baptiste on Patreon but there is no way I can afford $200 CND (including shipping) for the first volume of FOUR books. I mean, a complete set will cost $800! eek I really want this, but not at that price, unfortuantely.

Thanks, didn't see this.

I have been looking forward to this for such a long time, but unfortunately now feel completely crushed by the cost plus p&p and no doubt custom charges.

The James Horner kickstarter campaign version two seems to be struggling with only 25% achieved with less than 50% of the time left. This feels a good barometer on what people can afford to pay or are prepared to pay.

I would love to order volume one but to then repeat this expense for the next three volumes is out of reach.
It might be handy to know the release dates of the next three books to enable people to plan and save.

I think it all comes down to what's written on the customs label. In the UK you're allowed up to £39 value before you have to pay import fees. Most companies I use (with the exception of Varese, that's why I know longer use them) will help you out by putting the value to £10 or £15 so you don't pay any fees. If they put the correct price of this book on the customs label, unfortunately you will have to pay 29% of the total online at UPS before they will deliver it.

I wonder if a "budget" pricing option isn't in the cards. After the initial release period.

Well, I'll add my voice to the chorus. I understand that this is a niche item for people like the people at this board. And James Horner is probably my very favorite composer, the one who most 'speaks to my heart' if you will.

I was expecting this book to be expensive, but this is quite a bit more than I thought it would be. I hope that in the future there is a cheaper option available. I'd love to be able to support this - I love and share Jean-Baptiste Martin's passion... but this is just too much. And there's not a lot of time before the price jumps to the point that the first volume would be nearly $200.

This isn't meant as a criticism. I'm not being mean, it's just intended as honest feedback.

I was planning on getting this, but I just can’t. I have nothing but respect for the author and the ambition and effort this must’ve taken. But at the end of the day I have to know my limit.

First time poster here but I have been following the FSM forums for many years.

I wish to add my “two cents” to this topic. I was also looking forward to the release of this amazing tribute to Horner and presumed it would be an automatic day one purchase for me. He is my absolute favourite composer; I have followed his career with great passion since 1995. However, finances preclude me from purchasing the biography at its current price.

I must echo the feedback many have given here. The cost of this biography is prohibitive. Once you include shipping (62$ to Canada, per volume), you are looking at a minimum of $830 CAD, for all four volumes, or more, with possible custom/taxes due on arrival. This is only if we take advantage of the “special pricing” for each volume.

A few people here have suggested a cheaper option. I definitely would love to see that and would support it fully.

An epub/PDF version would also be appreciated. I reviewed Mr. Martin’s FAQ page and his reasons for not providing a digital version of the project. I respectfully disagree, given the utility and ubiquity of digital books today. I personally use digital and audio books, almost exclusively, due to poor vision.

I hate to make the comparison between this project and the Jerry Goldsmith Companion two volume set, as both, likely faced different obstacles/barriers to production. I am in no way suggesting that Mr. Martin should not be compensated for his years of hard work and dedication to this wonderful tribute. However, the substantial price difference, nearly four times as much as the Goldsmith biography, leaves me to wonder if Mr. Martin may be out of touch with current economic realities.

Its extremely disappointing that this project has, in my view, purposely been priced at a point where fans (including myself) of Mr. Horner will not be able to purchase his biography, which appears to be thoroughly researched and well written (based on the sample provided a few months ago).

I have emailed Jean-Baptiste this morning, firstly to thank him for his Herculean efforts to get this project completed but to also ask for clarification of future release dates and costs (including potential early bird offers) fir the remaining volumes so for those that do want to buy we can plan ahead with confidence and time to save!

Being a life long Horner fanatic I really want to buy these but I need a plan. Without a plan it’ll be a ‘no’ from me.

I don’t understand this. The U.K. does not charge import duty for books. They are zero rated.

This price is a joke, right?

Taschen's big coffee table books are cheaper...

It remains for me to wish the author good luck.

I have had a reply which I won’t post verbatim but the general gist is this:

*The intention is to release one volume a year
*This will depend on the text being completed and permission granted from studios and individuals
*Discounts may be in the offering at Christmas or other times but not sure.

It’s clear that the second volume will not be appearing in the near future so definitely time to save. The planning of the remaining volumes is on going - and I suspect it will depend on how volume one sells (plus the agreed permissions of relevant parties).
