My copy arrived today and I'm playing it. First note: this is no longer a case of "I bought it as a tie-in to The Six Million Dollar Man." Is that what I thought? That was crazy. Death of a Gunfighter is not a souvenir, it's a fantastic film score.

It's really hitting my sweet spot. Incredibly cool music. You know that feeling when you play something new, and it's so good you don't want to play anything else? I had it with Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica albums 20 years ago, and I'm having it now. This is the music I want.

Also, I'm thrilled to pieces with the sound quality! And I hadn't noticed when ordering that it would be in stereo, so that's another thing I'm happy about. I just assumed that movies were mono in 1969, and there was never an LP, so that would be that. But we got it in stereo. This CD is a grand slam. Really glad I bought it.

It's mind-boggling to me how many amazing releases La-La Land has brought us over the past two decades, both mainstream grails and buried treasures (like this one), once thought impossible...

And these releases don't just *poof* happen, either. They exist now because these guys had the gonads, guts, and gusto to turn their dreams into plans and put the plans into action with the crazy tenacity to see them through to the finish line, not to mention great fekkin taste in music.

My hat's off, gents, and thanks for keeping a smile on my ears all these years.

Heard a rip of this and had to order it. Nice surprise hearing his "Night Gallery" music in track 28.
An unexpected perk is LLL is having a 25% sale which essentially covers shipping.

Can you identify the "Night Gallery" episode (or was it tracked into more than one)? I haven't received my copy yet, but that news is an added bonus.

It's prominently used in "Phantom Farmhouse." I assume they combined short cues for the cd, so in track "28. Come In / Hidden Valley" the first cue is about 18 seconds, the second cue a minute (which is the Night Gallery bit). There might be other music reused in NG, but nothing as iconic or easily recognizable.
Uploaded temporarily for educational purposes:

Indeed, I validate that the last part of that track will be reworked in “The Phantom Farmhouse”, Dr. Jay.

I just received my copy this morning.
What a great album!

Going thru the booklet. I can't help but notice the absence of any photo of the ape women from Skullduggery.

My question for LLL: Was it intentional from you to not show them or was it a request from Universal?

And what was the reason?

Sort of a crime against humanity that Nelson died at 43. It's selfish to put it that way, but I loved the direction he was pushing his soundtrack music in.

Unfortunately, by 1978, most artists went into Disco Music. Fortunately, Nelson never saw that era.

Indeed, the way too early loss of Oliver Nelson is dramatic for his family in the first place but also for film and TV music history, as he was one of the most gifted composer/arranger with jazz roots of his generation.

I wish he got more recognition and interest for his Hollywood stuff during the last 5 decades, beyond his legendary previous jazz carreer for which he is most well known.

Let's hope this Lalaland release is a winner enough to avoid the usual statement..."such or such composer does not sell" so we may expect more Oliver Nelson releases....

I had previously only heard his jazz albums, of which Blues and the Abstract Truth is a classic.

So, this is my first score experience (as a kid I watched The Name of the Game, but only remember the theme).

On a casual first listen, Death of a Gunfighter didn't grab me, but I was very impressed by Skullduggery--some great themes.

Oh my God, this is fantastic! I browsed the whole thing and it's plenty of Nelson trademarks all throughout...
Some parts even sound Gil Mellé's best stuff.

11'14" in
29'05" in
30'02" to 32'20'
32'20' to 33'45' (sounds very Gil mellé!)
38'54' to 40'12'
40'51' to 41'45'
45'12" in
46'00" in
50'40' in
51'30' in
57'27" to 59'30'
1h00'00' to 1h02'26'
1h08'50' to 1h10'40' (sounds Gil Mellé once again)
1h12'10' to 1h14'50'
1h15'35' to finale.

The best cue is very funky groovy:

The above links to a thread we had in 2019, and mentions the connection between SKULLDUGGERY and the (Nelson-arranged) Count Basie album, "Afrique". Still not sure of the exact timeline between them.

And I STILL haven't heard the new CD, which came in on Monday. I have to create the correct environment.

Totally underrated film and televison composer.
Equals Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones and Dave Grusin.
Let's hope for more CD releases of his music.
His Hollywood carreer was very short (1967>1975) but he delivered a maximum of highlights.

I think this might be my favourite new purchase of the year so far. I hope you are all thoroughly enjoying it as much as I am, and if you aren't, well I pity you.

It's definitely one of my top releases of the year to date as well! In the hopes of getting more people interested in it, and thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, I just started a new CD GIVEAWAY thread here at FSM, for this fantastic album:
https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=157888&forumID=1&archive=0

Please enter in that thread by this coming Wednesday at midnight PST if you're interested.
