Personally, when I listen to a film score I want to focus on the cues in complete form as they were composed.

This.

To some extent, it depends on listener taste. The Futureland CDs (which are identical in content to the new releases) are a better listen if one prefers to hear the full, unedited cues in numerical order, with songs and source music (in the films that have them) saved for the end - as opposed to a film presentation that includes edited and repeated cues and source music arranged in film order. Personally, when I listen to a film score I want to focus on the cues in complete form as they were composed.

That's actually why I love Complete Recordings 9, 10 and 11 so much. You get the best of both worlds. One disc has the cues as recorded, while the other disc contains the film presentation. I'd like to have both whenever possible, so those three albums are especially great. Plus, I can pick and choose the way I want to listen to those scores. I may not want to listen to the film presentation of a score and vice versa, so having a choice is fantastic.

I agree, those are ideal examples of how to do a deluxe presentation. Below is a photo of all three, for the curious.

Now I want to pull out my copies and give them yet another listen! Perhaps on Friday when I have time.

I noticed an error in my post mentioning them. I said "especially both" instead "especially great", so I corrected it. It's the result of being tired and literally being worked to death.

Those are Toho Music's 50th Anniversary Godzilla Soundtrack Perfect Collection box sets. There's six in total.

The boxes contain the complete soundtracks to the first 28 Godzilla scores, from GODZILLA (1954) through GODZILLA: FINAL WARS (2004). Also included are bonus CDs that replicate past LP compilations as well as Akira Ifukube's OSTINATO and SYMPHONIC FANTASIA albums. Though the boxes are extremely comprehensive, the mastering is inconsistent, and in some cases, inferior to earlier releases.

Don't forget the Akira Ifukube Recording Archives DVD that was given to those who purchased all six boxes!

Unfortunately, I missed out on that little premium. I waited too long to purchase the last 3 boxes..!

Or was it for purchasing the first five boxes? I can't remember.

My favorite segment is the video recorded during the Ostinato sessions. At one point, you see Ifukube about to light up a cigarette, only for him to realize he was about to light the filter end! You also see him trying to light another cigarette, in which he gives up after some attempts to get his lighter to work.

Oh, David Arnold's "Godzilla" '98 is included in the sixth box, so that makes 29 scores in all.

Ah - I conveniently forgot that one. I wonder why? wink

Hmm... Perhaps it's due to the film being an abysmal piece-of-shit! Arnold's score is decent though.

Arnold's score is decent though.

Nevertheless, I don't feel it belongs in a set devoted to the Japanese Godzilla scores. It dilutes the brand frown

Yeah, I think I have to agree there.

And that's not enough Godzilla for people? Or is that what's being reissued?

The new Universal Music Japan CDs are reissues of Toshiba/Futureland's 1993 "Godzilla Complete Works" 40th Anniversary set (which covered the first 20 films), with two scores added from 1994 and 1995 and somewhat updated cover art. The original set was very well-regarded, because it was the first time all of the Godzilla scores up to that point were released individually in complete form, and the sound quality was very good. Unfortunately, the CDs went out of print before the end of the decade.

Toho Music's 2004-2010 "Perfect Collection" 50th Anniversary boxes made the music available again (adding the scores to 7 later films), and featured a lot of bells and whistles in terms of packaging and bonus material. But the need to purchase expensive boxes to get all the scores made the music less accessible to many fans who didn't want everything. On top of that, the mastering was inconsistent and even disappointing in places, so the advantage of Universal's campaign is that it makes the individual scores available again at bargain prices (only $13.82 each at the current conversion rate). Of course, it still only covers the first 22 films, but at least buyers can pick and choose the titles they want.

Considering this year is Godzilla's 70th Anniversary, I wouldn't be surprised if Universal (or another sanctioned label) drops the rest of the scores before the end of the year - but that is pure speculation!

This was all very daunting but now it’s very clear. You all did a great job breaking down the different releases and the pluses and minuses of each!

Thank you! To clarify further, here are the original, out-of-print CDs that are being reissued:

We can never get enough. So much great Godzilla related merchandise is always being unleashed to the public and we eat it all up! For me, it's the film music and collecting certain figures.

Thanks! It isn't the first time we did this. We've even gone into great detail in the past. It's always a pleasure to do so.
