Personally, when I listen to a film score I want to focus on the cues in complete form as they were composed. This.

To some extent, it depends on listener taste. The Futureland CDs (which are identical in content to the new releases) are a better listen if one prefers to hear the full, unedited cues in numerical order, with songs and source music (in the films that have them) saved for the end - as opposed to a film presentation that includes edited and repeated cues and source music arranged in film order. Personally, when I listen to a film score I want to focus on the cues in complete form as they were composed. That's actually why I love Complete Recordings 9, 10 and 11 so much. You get the best of both worlds. One disc has the cues as recorded, while the other disc contains the film presentation. I'd like to have both whenever possible, so those three albums are especially great. Plus, I can pick and choose the way I want to listen to those scores. I may not want to listen to the film presentation of a score and vice versa, so having a choice is fantastic.

Someone help me out here: What are these gigantic box sets I have - four or five boxes. Those are Toho Music's 50th Anniversary Godzilla Soundtrack Perfect Collection box sets. There's six in total. And that's not enough Godzilla for people? Or is that what's being reissued?

And that's not enough Godzilla for people? Or is that what's being reissued? The new Universal Music Japan CDs are reissues of Toshiba/Futureland's 1993 "Godzilla Complete Works" 40th Anniversary set (which covered the first 20 films), with two scores added from 1994 and 1995 and somewhat updated cover art. The original set was very well-regarded, because it was the first time all of the Godzilla scores up to that point were released individually in complete form, and the sound quality was very good. Unfortunately, the CDs went out of print before the end of the decade. Toho Music's 2004-2010 "Perfect Collection" 50th Anniversary boxes made the music available again (adding the scores to 7 later films), and featured a lot of bells and whistles in terms of packaging and bonus material. But the need to purchase expensive boxes to get all the scores made the music less accessible to many fans who didn't want everything. On top of that, the mastering was inconsistent and even disappointing in places, so the advantage of Universal's campaign is that it makes the individual scores available again at bargain prices (only $13.82 each at the current conversion rate). Of course, it still only covers the first 22 films, but at least buyers can pick and choose the titles they want. Considering this year is Godzilla's 70th Anniversary, I wouldn't be surprised if Universal (or another sanctioned label) drops the rest of the scores before the end of the year - but that is pure speculation!
