Mutant, I think the dynamics on this are so wide that a lower-volume master was the best way to go on the 1991 CD. It's great we're getting a 192kHz/24-bit remaster, but dammit if this one especially isn't perfect for a high-end, analogue-sound download, à la the Solti Ring. Yes, this recording is that dynamic.

https://quartetrecords.com/product/cape-fear-2-cd/ Quartet Records, Universal Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, Universal Music Special Markets and Geffen Records present an expanded and remastered 2-CD edition of Elmer Bernstein’s adaptation of Bernard Herrmann’s music for CAPE FEAR, the 1991 remake directed by Martin Scorsese from the 1962 Universal classic film noir for which Herrmann composed the original score. Starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis—with special appearances by the main actors of the original film, Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck—the film is a harrowing thriller about a convict released from prison after serving a fourteen-year sentence, who then stalks the family of the lawyer who originally defended him. Both Scorsese and producer Steven Spielberg were clear from the start that they wanted to use Herrmann’s iconic score from the original film in their new version, knowing that Herrmann’s music could still move audiences in 1991 as it had three decades earlier. Elmer Bernstein, a close friend and scholar of Herrmann, was the best choice to adapt the score to the needs and editing of the new film. Parts of Herrmann’s rejected score for his last collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock, TORN CURTAIN, as well as some original music by Bernstein in Herrmann’s style, were incorporated here and there to give the new score more consistency. Bernard Herrmann’s last score was for Scorsese’s TAXI DRIVER, and it was his meeting with Elmer Bernstein on CAPE FEAR that marked the beginning of a fruitful professional relationship, making this score an important cornerstone in the New York director’s filmography. This expanded collection has been produced by GRAMMY nominee Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk and mastered by Mike Matessino from original 6-track mixes by engineer Shawn Murphy recorded in New York and London. Disc 1 includes the film score presentation with never-before-released material and additional bonus tracks. The remastered original MCA album, which features performance variations and alternate mixes in some tracks, appears on Disc 2. The package includes an in-depth essay by film music writer Jeff Bond. Ordered! Listened to the sound clips and they sound amazing. This would be a cool book for Omni Music or Chris Siddall to cover.

This could just be me but, from the Quartet samples, it seems the drier, more up-front mix of the '91 album has been retained for that album. The new score presentation, just based on the samples (which I realize have been processed for quick streaming and seem volume-limited), sounds wider and more lush. Again, it could just be me.

I noticed this with Papillon as well. Like they used different mics or stems. Much closer mic'd than the original Silva CD.

My CD purchasing has gone down in the last few years with exchange rate and shipping prices, etc. but there’s no way I was gonna miss out on this. My first score purchase of the year aside from Licence To Kill. Just placed an order at screen archives.. yeah it's hard being a collector in Canada when our dollar sucks and import fees/shipping is absorbent.

Gosh, that was quick - I ordered this set from Quartet the day before yesterday and it is due to arrive here in Scotland tomorrow morning! I already have the original CD of the soundtrack but Herrmann is a favourite of mine, so I weakened and ordered. yup I got my shipment notice this morning to Canada via Fed Ex.

Mine arrived today (on Sunday!!). Great sound! Really clear. Are the mixes on the film tracks and '91 album different? I did an A/B and the mastering seems consistent between the full score and the original album. To me they are both brighter than the original MCA release. Lots of detail.
