I have Nat's recording of Haji Baba and, of course, it's wonderful. I also have a schmaltzy instrumental version Tiomkin recorded of his Pharaoahs theme song, but I never knew it WAS a song until today, Stevenj. Did ANYONE ever record it with the lyrics? How did you find them for your performance? I have a copy of the original sheet music, the cover of which is mostly given over to a striking photo of Joan in her Egyptian garb. Maybe I can manage to get it scanned and posted at some point. I also love the lines: "By the pyramids there were moments like this, Lovers warmed their hearts" (or something) "with the fire of a kiss." I don't think anyone recorded a vocal version of this obscure title song. But you never know. I once found a 78 rpm vocal of the theme from (or a song "inspired" by) PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, which suggests anything is possible...... Tiomkin did record this theme (on a Coral LP, wasn't it?) It was also recorded by Leroy Holmes on the "Lush Themes from Hollywood" MGM mono only LP I mention above. I also replayed the Bernstein recording of LAND. It has more subtle moments than I recalled, but I still think most of it is pretty weird, especially the choral tracks. Note, please, that I can't say I don't like it, I just think it's strange..... BTW I ordered my copy of "Camp Classics #4" and the Special Edition LOST WORLD from Amazon yesterday. Can't wait! RC

.....Here is today's instalment ...... Director Henry Koster to Victor Mature, Michael Rennie, and Dean Jagger: KOSTER: "OK now, Michael, we're on a 3-shot of you, Vic and Dean. When the camera rolls, Michael, you reach down and comfort Dean. He's been shot with an arrow, remember, and he's dying. STOP LAUGHING, Dean, what's so funny? This is serious! The audience didn't expect this to happen to you and they're going to be upset. Al's going to write some great dying music for you, so it'll be real sad. Try coughing a few times as you say your last lines....." JAGGER: "Oh, yeah! The old coughing when you're dying bit. I've done this before!" (More laughter) KOSTER: Stop it, NOW, Dean! We gotta get this shot in the can before the end of the day. We got these expensive extras standing around and we need to get 'em off the payroll. And we still need to get a good take on that flat version Darryl needs. C'mon, guys, let's concentrate here!" RENNIE: "Hank....don't blame us. Vic's ready---so am I. It's Dean causing the trouble." JAGGER: "Sorry, Henry! I was just relaxing here in Michael's arms---heh, heh!---and thinking THEY have to spend the rest of the Spring in these hot scratchy robes and I get to go on vacation after today. I'm going on a Holiday to Europe with the little wife and you and the other guys'll be slaving for 3 more months! I like these dying scenes---easier than the 12 O'CLOCK HIGH shoot!" KOSTER: "OK, OK. Now, Michael, when you say the line to Dean about "We will meet in heaven one day"---Geez, I hate that line, couldn't Maltz have come up with something better? When you say the line....." RENNIE: "Can I say something else, like "The Father in Heaven who made us all......." MATURE: "Why doesn't he say, "When we meet in the great beyond....." KOSTER: "Thanks, Vic. No, Vic. You stick to lookin' hunky and let me deal with this. Michael, I think we can get away with the line for now, but put your head down when you say it and maybe your beard'll block your lips and we can loop another line in there later." RENNIE: "OK, I'll try, but that puts my face at an odd angle, and then when you go for my close-up it'll look funny." MATURE: "Wait a minute! Rennie gets a close-up? My agent told me I get as many close-ups as all of 'em. I've been here at Fox longer than anyone 'cept Dean. If HE gets a close-up, I GET A CLOSE-UP!" KOSTER: "Shut up, Vic. NO ONE gets a close-up here. We've been looking at rushes in CinemaScope the past few days, and we don't think we need as many close-ups as before---the screen's big enough." MATURE: "Does that mean I don't get any close-ups in the whole film? That crucifixion scene's comin' up and that's my big scene, and I'm gonna need a really big close-up to do my acting." KOSTER: "Let's not worry about that now, Vic. Just put your hand on Michael's shoulder....." MATURE: "I thought that was a good touch.....good acting, you know." KOSTER: "Yes, Vic. That'll be good in convincing the audience you care." MATURE: "Geez.....I wish I was doin' a crime drama instead of this. I'm so much better in a pinstripe suit and a gun in my hand. SAMSON was a piece of crap, and DeMille was mean to me." KOSTER: "Yeah, Hedy told me about it at a party. OK now, let's....." MATURE: "We had a prop lion for some of the scenes, but once he made me walk on the set beside a real lion. Scared me s--tless!" KOSTER: "OK, Vic! No lions in this scene. You're signed for DEMETRIUS after this and you'll get lions then." MATURE: "No s--t? They told me it was just great love scenes with Susan Hayward and a few gladiator fights. Lions? No s--t!!!....." KOSTER: Shut up, Vic! Let's get a take. OK, little girl on the right.....now let's see some emotion there. This is your beloved uncle dying. You're really sad. Act sad! OK, now, Leon. All the lights set? Did I see that brute arc flickering?" SHAMROY: "It's OK, Henry.....the carbon'll last for a coupla' more takes, but let's get the G-d D--n, Fu---n' shot before 3. I wanna' get home at a decent hour tonight and I hate this Algerian Street set! Every other s--t movie I make here has a scene on the "Algerian Street". I wish they'd tear it down!" KOSTER: "OK, everybody calm down! Let's go for a take! Ready? Quiet please! Roll Sound! Roll Sound..... ROLL SOUND! Are we rolling sound, please? SOUNDMAN: "Yeah, boss! KOSTER: Well you gotta' tell me! This new stereo sound is gonna' be the death of me! OK, slate! SECOND ASSISTANT: "Production 1703, Scene 32, Take 1, Marker....." KOSTER: "......and, ACTION!"

There are two different campagn books for The Robe - one mentions stereo in all the ads and the other does not. the so called title song was recorded by Johnny Desmond on a 45 ( another song, from the film, This too shall pass, is on the flipside) The backdrop for the crucifixion in The Robe is also used in one scene in How to Marry a Millionaire - in a dream, Monroe is in arabia receiving jewels the set is Pilates room in The robe with the backdrop seen through the door. Title song? More details? There was a record called "Robe of Calvary" which was released (as I recall) about the same time as THE ROBE, but it had nothing to do with the film, other than to exploit the title.

There are two different campagn books for The Robe - one mentions stereo in all the ads and the other does not. The backdrop for the crucifixion in The Robe is also used in one scene in How to Marry a Millionaire - in a dream, Monroe is in arabia receiving jewels the set is Pilates room in The robe with the backdrop seen through the door. Some of the ROBE sets are also seen again in THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN (ironically, for the cocktail party sequence). There was also a souviner booklet you could buy at the premiere screenings of THE ROBE. They sometimes issued these for big films in the '50s (QUO VADIS, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH). They cost about 50-cents and were softback, i.e., not like the later hardback books that came with the soundtracks for BEN HUR, KING OF KINGS, et al.
