I ordered it, along with the Early Goldsmith release. Last night when I put my credit card back in my wallet after ordering from Intrada, I said, "Well, that's it, no more cd's til 2008." Hah. Never say never.

Wasn't that delayed until January?

The source used was an ORIGINAL LP sent out to the Academy Music Branch.

All other releases flow from this pressing.

Ford A. Thaxton

You're talking about the real world, Ford.

HERE, as been stated again and again, composer promos and guild (Academy) promos are considered like bootlegs, threads have been frozen and/or dropped by the powers that be discussing such things.

Well, he didn't actually say that. All legal licensing fees have been paid for the usage of the music for this release. They just used an Academy promo (or bootleg version) as the source for the mastering of the CD.

For some reason I'd rather see it mastered from one of the official Academy promo's them a bootleg of it.

But still....

Maybe I should put the entire dialogue down every time so people don't think I am answering just one item:

Morricone: In other words the release is legit, but the source isn't.

Ford: No.

The source used was the original ACADEMY "For your Consideration" LP that was sent out by Mr. Williams then agent.

It helped get him a nomination for BEST SCORE that year.

everything that followed (including all of the bootleg editions) used this pressing as it's source.

I'm confounded by some of the tone in this thread. As stated, the release has been licensed from the rights holders. What else do you need to know? So, it's mastered from an original LP sent out to Academy members - why? Because the tapes are lost. No different than the FSM Bernstein box that mastered several of those CDs from LP or the other occasional FSM release mastered from LP.

Prometheus has put out many CDs, and as far as I know, all have been legit. So I'd say that a couple of people who are being so accusatory in this thread should relax and either order the CD or not.

I think the tone is because the rather confusing and brief notice about the release. A rare and famously unavailable John williams score would generally be far more loudly and clearly touted.

Where's the press release, for starters?
Come on, someone get their act together and announce it properly, with music clips and a little blurb about what we are getting.

I'm looking forward to listening to the clips.

Okay... he did say that. smile

This is getting very convoluted and I'm sure that someone at SAE dropped the bomb when they made their posting on their site. Too bad. All this and there was never an official announcement from PROMETHEUS. Odd, and I still can't find it listed on their site.

I'm genuinely excited that this great Williams gem is finally officially released.

This is probably JW at his most experimental and avantgardistic. However, there are also moments of pure lyrical bliss such as "Blood Moon".

I guess the FYC Academy LP was indeed the only source available, as I remember that Lukas mentioned several times here that the master tapes are indeed lost or destroyed.

Kudos and big thanks to Prometheus and everyone involved in getting this baby released!

Yep, all around it's good news, everyone relax. Just the initial announcment or post was bungled a bit with the word "bootleg", bringing to mind some recent unpleasantness.

Let's hope it sounds as good as the North LP's from the FSM box.

So looking forward to the audio clips on this, as I have zero knowledge of the score itself. Who is familiar with it can chip in?

The absence of any info at all about this release from Prometheus is extraordinary.
A few words about the product would surely have been better than sending potential buyers to Google to research a few snippets of info from old film reviews.
Am I the only person who is not familiar with this film or its music?

IMAGES (1972) is a beautiful and very
strange film with a "dreamlike" quality.
Robert Altman directed, and Susannah
York stars. The fantasy vs. reality
"plot" deals with York's emotional
collapse into schizophrenia.
The atonal music by Williams is equally
beautiful, haunting, eerie and at times
quite frightening. Both the film
(available on dvd) and the score
are essential additions to anyone's
collection who is interested in films
or film scores of the offbeat.

Ordered!

Our local Swashbuckler sent me an email about this score years ago...

This is one of Williams' most experimental work, and certainly one of his most primal. It incorporates the odd sounds created by New York based artist Stomu Yamash'ta. Some of the tonalities created were done so by rubbing/banging/etc. with giant metal sculptures.

The film is about a woman succumbing to schizophrenia, and on a deeper level discarding the 'masks' forced upon her, with sometimes violent results, so the more dischordant music represents her slipping through various states of consciousness.

The main theme is called "In Search of Unicorns," the title of the children's book that actress Susannah York was writing during the shooting, which Altman incorporated into the film. There is also an an interesting quasi-baroque theme heard in several cues.

Its very much in the vein of Alien, Alien 3 or Altered States. Really thick, interesting music. About as far from John Williams as John Williams ever got.

A while ago someone posted a link to a 6 part
BBC documentary that dealt with scoring the Empire Strikes Back.
Somewhere in this very interesting documentary is a filmclip
from "Images" as well as other Williams work.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=5SonS8tQ2zA

The part about Images starts in part 2 of 6 (8:55), it continues in part 3
(and there is where the music comes in)

Has it? oz1282 and MikeJ said it has, but Ford (rather curiously) has not said so. He's only commented on the fact that it was mastered from a promotional LP.

I'm thrilled that this is finally out on CD, but who exactly are the rights holders for this music? Ford?

Prometheus is a legitimate label. SAE is a legitimate saleshouse.

COME ON, PEOPLE!! THIS ISN'T A BOOTLEG!! WHY DO YOU CARE WHO PAYS THE RIGHTS TO SELL THE MUSIC? IT AIN'T YOUR BUSINESS!! EITHER BUY THE DAMN DISC OR DON'T, BUT STOP COMPLAINING!!!

Good grief...just when you thought you'd heard it all...

It makes one wonder why people like Lukas and Ford and Douglass ever bother...when this is the kind of crap they have to deal with on practically every single release.

You just can please some of the people ANY of the time, it seems!!

Then again, altmaniac just "showed up" today...so it might very well be the same person who attacked Morgan-Stromberg on their Mysterious Island release...heh...

Joe

P.S. The music is VERY atonal and experimental. I can't recall any other Williams' score that sounds like this, or even comes close in fact. Then again, the film is an excercise in madness and the music works PERFECTLY!
