I've made my way through all of S2 and music wise I'm hearing recycled Nelson material from the first couple seasons of "Ironside" and somewhat disconcertingly I feel like I'm hearing a bit of a synthed riff of the "Mission: Impossible" theme at various points (with the SMDM theme mixed in in counterpoint). And there's one cue during some of Steve's romantic interludes that also bears more than a passing resemblance to the song "It Had Better Be Tonight" from the first "Pink Panther" movie.
Not saying that as a knock on Nelson, just what my reactions have been as someone who is mostly being reintroduced to the series for the first time since childhood and not having been an expert on the show.
I'm curious Eric, if you could pin some of that down. I'm trying to put together as much information as I can relating to this soundtrack. Any particular Ironside-to-Six moves (I assume, as with the Columbo, that these are instances of Nelson reusing his own work) that you could name for us? I can grant that the incidental music for "The Seven Million Dollar Man" which includes some of Nelson's most memorable work for the show, does have a track during Barney's mission against the nuclear thieves that has a M:I style bed under it. On top is the 7MDM theme.
There are absolutely "on" and "off" episodes when it comes to music. Tracking abounds, and occasionally the original scores are unremarkable. If you read back in this thread, you'll see the episodes that have been singled out for distinction.
I wonder if this sort of borrowing from one show to another is part of why Universal doesn't move its old music catalog out. As a company, they are averse to licensing issues to begin with, but if the music is legally entangled with other properties than it's easy to see why they might throw up their arms.
Of course it's all moot if they don't have the tapes anymore.

Major, I just started a thread on www.thesix1973.com relating to this very topic. Got a hold of some "Longstreet" and I plan to include some Longstreet cues in my iPod alongside the SMDM tracks, they are that good.
Watched Ironside episode "Tagged for Murder", which I found to be not as much to my liking. You could hear incidental violins that were Nelson, but nothing adequately "groovy".
Nelson's 1964 album, More Blues and the Abstract Truth, contains "Theme From Mr. Broadway" (track 3) as well as "Blues for Mr. Broadway" (track 7). Before my time, so I was unaware of the history behind the tracks, thanks.
