Oh, and in all my excitement over this one, I forgot to mention… what a bargain! Thanks for the price break, too!

Needless to say, it's been very hard not to acknowledge it was this, but I'm glad the Jacks' out of the bag. I love this score so much and it's taken a really long time to make it happen, but here it is and, as I hope you'll hear from the audio clips (which are mp3s and obviously not as good as the CD itself), it sounds pretty amazing. This is my second favorite Friedhofer score (after Best Years) and one of my ten favorite scores of all time.

Thank you SO much Bruce for making this happen. If Best Years didn't exist, this would probably be considered Friedhofer's magnum opus. Could you tell us a little bit more about how this release came about? Obviously in the other thread a lot of people doubted it was One-Eyed Jacks because the original tracks were thought to be lost and the rights to the score (like the film) were in question...and just to be sure, your CD does have the complete score for the original full length of the film? Lots of this music is being heard for the first time, right? This is major front page film music news if so!

Thanks also for preserving the sound of the recording and also for involving Nick Redman for more extensive liner notes than your releases usually have.

Now one last greedy question: I'm broke. Any chance I could have a free copy since I was the first to dare guessing One-Eyed Jacks in the other thread? smile

(OMG, Nevada Smith could be it but what about...One Eyed Jacks?! If Hugo scored the original cut of the film I suspect his score could spread across two CDs!)

I've written a note about the release on the site that contains a lot of information. CD 2 contains the entire score - it's about thirty-five minutes more material than the LP program and that's a lot of great minutes, I can tell you. With the two alternates, it came out to over eighty minutes of incredible Friedhofer.

I've tried watching the Netflix version. Just read the comments on the site itself -- it's the same horrible transfer available on the DVDs.

For about three days it was going to be our standard bargain 2CD price of 22.98, but at the last minute I just decided to make it a no-brainer smile

It is moving very fast. Kritzerland will be sold out today, I think I can say that with a certainty.

The only halfway decent transfer this film has had was the laserdisc - and half the DVDs out there used that - they didn't use it well, but they used it. If there were to be a beautiful transfer done then anyone could use it.

I know that the fact we don't put track timings on the CD tray cards is irksome to a handful of people. As I've stated before, I don't like them and that's why we don't do them. However, starting with this release, we'll have the track timings available to copy or download on the site. They'll be up at some point today.

I am not very well acquainted with film or composer but based on the raves, in this very thread, I snagged a copy.

I know. I read your note (see my nudge above about the alternate main title you mention). I was just wondering if there was an interesting story* behind the original tracks to this still managing to exist, given that the film wasn't done by a major studio and Friedhofer in general usually seems so unlucky when it comes to his scores surviving (especially in complete form).

*You know, one like the story behind the original Islands in the Stream recording surviving -- is One-Eyed Jacks another one we can thank you for it even *existing* today, much less getting a release? (Who had the rights to the complete score, by the way?) Or did Nick Redman perhaps have more to do with this than the liner notes?

And Criterion seems to be the only company that will forge ahead and pay for a restoration for a film in that situation anyway. So I'm hoping it happens with them.

Better than Cohen and Tate where there is no DVD release at all. I like to watch the movies when I order some new soundtrack for a film I never saw so something is better than nothing.

As far as I know they're all public domain, usually made from some 1" video tape borrowed from a TV station. Please Paramount sort it all out & release a stunning Blu-ray.

From your mouth to the DVD gods' ears! But why not ask Criterion instead? I'm sure they'd do an even better job than Paramount as regards a restoration, and they do a lot of PD films that nobody else bothers to lavish time and effort upon.

Look at another one-time directorial masterpiece that The Digital Bits just finally announced: Charles Laughton's amazing Night of the Hunter. Now thanks to Criterion we're getting in in the original aspect ratio at last, with a whole ton of bonus features and yes they ARE doing a Blu-ray version!

Whoever did it would need access to the original elements. It would cost a lot of money & would not be a big seller (such as the mad world we live in, I mean this release would sell out at 10,000 in a sane world). All the Paramount catalogue releases I have on DVD look terrific, so I'd trust them to do it right. You never know, it may happen. I never thought this release would happen.

Great release and also already ordered. However, I do also wonder if the original stereo tapes were indeed archived at Paramount. The liner notes say nothing about this.

I managed to get a friend to snag a copy of this release for me, for my little personal reasons. It'll be a joy to have this in my hands. smile

It's nothing that complicated, thankfully. It just all worked out easily, once we finally did the license. Nick did the liner notes because he loves the film, and I couldn't think of anyone who would do them better.

Fantastic! I never expected such a major release. ONE-EYED JACKS is a wonderful score for a brilliant film. One of my all-time favourites - both score and film. Can't wait to hear it. Good to see Nick Redman has done the notes. Thanks for this Bruce.

Terrific news! This will be a guaranteed sell out!

As for the situation with the movie, Paramount still owns the negative. A while back they made a brand new HD transfer. Then were told to forget any DVD or blu-ray release because the film fell into PD. So their newer master just sits there in the vault. I was told by someone I know who worked in Paramount Home Video that the transfer looked superb, better than anything done previously.
