>> which is listed as the soundtrack to “Gypsy Girl,” also known in the U.K. as “Sky West and >>Crooked.” This 1966 Hayley Mills drama was directed by John Mills and was released in the >>U.S. by Continental Distributing. The film had a score by Malcolm Arnold.

'Sky West & Crooked' must be one of the most deceptive 'soundtrack' albums ever....there is not a single note of Arnold's music on it. All of the so-called music is by Milton & Anne Delugg (...and we all know what house-hold names they are).

Think of this Mainstream album as the first 'music inspired by' soundtrack.

Arnold should have sued.

Jay

That makes "Gypsy Girl" the second album of DeLugg music released by Mainstream, after "Gulliver's Travels Beyond The Moon."

Criminey! A Sir Malcolm Arnold soundtrack album with none of his music. You're right, he should have sued!

The Mainstream LP GYPSY GIRL (56090 - S/6090) has no music by Malcolm Arnold (it features 12 cuts composed by Milton Delugg and arranged by Kermit Leslie - non of which appear in the original cut of the film). In fact my copy of the LP, while otherwise identical in appearance to the image posted elsewhere on this thread, does not list Arnold's name on the front - and rightly so! The sin of it is that Arnold's score is one of his most lovely. The main theme is a masterpiece of Silver Age scoring and thank God a nice cover version can be found on the 2010 CD "RON GRAINER-THE MAIGRET THEME" (Vocalion CDLK 4404). - John Bender

    Thanks!

I only have the Ava records LP of WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, and fogot that Mainstream had re-issued a few of Elmer Bernstein's Ava programs besides BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL.

Bernstein's deal (with Fred Astaire?, was it) on Ava seems quite short-lived (1962-1964); while TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, THE CARETAKERS, & THE CARPETBAGGERS got albums, not every soundtrack by Bernstein from these years surfaced on Ava. By 1965, Mainstream apparently released a version of BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL almost concurrent with its Ava incarnation. And their reissue of WALK ON THE WILD SIDE may have been the shortest time span between an original pressing and its reissue, being only a few years apart...

I also have Walk on the Wild Side on Choreo (A-4-ST). Were Choreo & Ava sister labels or connected in some way? The guide I have says that some Ava label discs were packaged in a Choreo cover.

    That's interesting.
I never owned a Choreo LP either.
Not sure if they are connected in some way, or if one is the successor of the other.
Perhaps someone like Bob DiMucci can answer that?
Maybe the Choreo came first, then within the same year E. Bernstein made his deal with Ava records...?...

As to how Mainstream selected the scores they would release, if you group the titles by releasing organization, some patterns emerge:

    The Wrong Box (07/66)

    Continental Distributing
The Gospel According To Saint Matthew

Here's an update on some Mainstream LP programs since 2011

    Missing from your update:

  • BABY THE RAIN MUST FALL and WALK ON THE WILD SIDE in Intrada's Elmer Bernstein Ava Collection box set (2014)
  • WALK, DON'T RUN in Universal France's Cinema of Quincy Jones box set (2016)

    Great thread!

Yeah ... I was considering Baby the Rain Must Fall, but, since this LP was also on the Ava label and Intrada included it within "The Ava Collection", I didn't highlight this title for this thread.

Thanks about Walk Don't Run. The soundtrack collector website doesn't appear to acknowledge that box set from Universal France.

I debated about mentioning it but since you had stated that it appeared almost concurrent with the Ava/Choreo release I decided to go ahead. And now, as you can see, I've even added WALK ON THE WILD SIDE! Since they technically were both Mainstream LP programs I included them in the interest of pedantic completeness. wink

Odd the things that don't show up there.

I don't own this set, but I suppose that Universal France did not replicate the Mainstream LP cover art.

Anyone who has a mind to can propose adding the set to the Soundtrack Collector database.

I came across an interesting article about Mainstream's soundtrack releases, in the April 23, 1966 issue of Record World.

The above article answers one of the questions that was raised in this thread, namely: How did Mainstream Records manage to release the soundtrack from the Fox film STAGECOACH? The answer, according to label head Bobby Shad, is that Jerry Goldsmith pushed for it, after being pleased with the efforts that Mainstream made in promoting his soundtrack to the MGM film A PATCH OF BLUE.

Is this in 'fake' stereo or real stereo?
    How does this sound?
