I'd be surprised if they did a reboot. The show earned FOX a lot of money until around the sixth season or so. After that, it started costing more and more after the move to LA... then Duchovny left in season 8... and on and on the show went. I remember Carter saying they were all but told the show wasn't going to last into season 8 (if I remember correctly, acting unions are allowed to renegotiate deals after the seventh year?) but Fox renewed it twice, leading to the very confusing later story arcs.

Then again, Star Trek was something of a loss when it first aired and here we are decades later still getting new incarnations, so what do I know?

The rumor going around is that Chris Carter has been talking with 20th TV about possibly doing a reboot of the show for television, so they're holding off for now on the BD release until they know what's happening with the reboot and can plan their marketing accordingly.

Didn't they already do this? I thought it was called Fringe. ;-)

always happy to see x-files relevant and new product on the way. but i'd certainly throw my backing behind a third movie over a reboot. a reboot and x-files I find to be a fairly condusing endeavor. just can't picture it. but if mulder taught me anything it's to keep an open mind. really looking forward to order this la la land in a few hours. this has been a good week for CDs.

Any more slates you can share with us, MV - or will the booklet feature a cuelist this time?

At the request of the composer, these tracks were cut from this final release.
That's sad, we will never hear what they sounded like. And 96 seconds is a great length to live out awesomness.

And one last thing: soundtrack.net lists original music from Mark Snow for one of the trailers, do you know if he composed something for it or is it material taken from the series?

Frankly I'd be surprised if they didn't. It's something of a hedge for Fox. Carter, Duchovny and Anderson have been clamoring to make a third movie for years, and reportedly they have an idea of what to do. So the want to is there but not the greenlight from Fox with the returns on the first two movies. But a new series is less of a commitment for the studio and gives them a chance to look at the viability of the property today.

A reboot with new actors would go over very poorly -- fans would refuse to watch, and I doubt Carter would entertain the idea either.

It's more likely that they would bring it back for a limited season, like Fox recently did with 24, to finish out the alien invasion story arc and give it closure. At least I'd hope so.

Digital Bits just reported within the last couple of days that Fox finished the HD restoration for the full series but didn't say a word about it at Comic Con. The rumor going around is that Chris Carter has been talking with 20th TV about possibly doing a reboot of the show for television, so they're holding off for now on the BD release until they know what's happening with the reboot and can plan their marketing accordingly.

It's more than a rumor. If you follow the links within the article, they eventually go to the original interview with Carter who says that he's had discussions with Fox about the show and how the the people running the studio now are the people he came up in the business with. He doesn't get specific, when pressed, as to whether that means a third film or a reboot, though. Maybe Fox is interested in making a limited-run season like they just did with 24? I'm interested in whatever comes out of it, either way.

Can that invasion story arc be satisfactorily finished? It got so damned convoluted. I watched the show religiously for years and I can't even remember all of the details.

I could see something like a "soft reboot" working along the lines of what's rumored for Star Wars 7... bring in the original actors for a season to "pass the torch" to a new group of young actors. This was sort of tried after Duchovny left the show with Agents Dogget and Reyes, but Reyes was a weak character and the show had gone on too long at that point. The show would somehow need to largely ditch its existing mythology and start fresh somehow.

I also wonder with Fringe having recently covered some of this ground and Supernatural still dealing with a lot of similar material if there's enough of an audience for this.

Would it, though? The 2004 GALACTICA reboot was a success as was STAR TREK: TNG (even though that was't quite a reboot, necessarily). If it's handled well I think it could be interesting--especially if Scully and Mulder have some part in it. Maybe Mulder could be the new Deep Throat or Agent X to our new protagonists? Chris Carter was involved in an "official" comic book release of "Season 9" a year ago so he seems to want to still be involved to some degree.

I agree that bringing it back as a limited-run season may be something that interests everyone. It seemed to work for 24.

I can't speak for Carter but I sincerely doubt the show would tank. How many Trek fans said they'd never watch a program without Kirk... and now where are we?

It's more likely that they would bring it back for a limited season, like Fox recently did with 24, to finish out the alien invasion story arc and give it closure.

This idea never occurred to me before and, frankly, I'm excited simply by the concept!

More than anything, I just want the series on Blu-ray. The remastering job Fox has done looks incredible.

Kinda sad that intro theme is still not included on this CD. The film version was a diffferent variant then the one used on film. Oh well. Still ordered. Love these releases.

I hope they don't do a "reboot"...the story of the original show still has not ended. A mini series like the recent 24 would be awesome.

Now, if I can only get Fox to release the series in blu-ray. The X-Files is airing in Germany in HD!!

Sounds like conspiracy to me. wink Who knows what Fox's plan is?! I do hope that we see a BD release of the complete series, if not it would be a serious missed opportunity. Whatever they decide for the 'reboot', I hope Duchovny, Anderson and Pileggi reprise their roles. Anything else other than that would cheapen it for me.
