A Token Ring will provide music for Tolkein's Rings.

Three years later and I’m changing my mind. It would be great if the had a few composers collaborate, but if I could choose one...Nicolas Britell. His music has been so thoughtful and exciting I want to see what he can do with LOTR. You just know it’s gonna be Djawadi. Amazon will get their GOT series. Nicolas Britell is one of the more promising names that has been mentioned here. It would be quite interesting to see what he could do. Still, I keep going back to Howard Shore. I just don't think they could do any better, considering what he accomplished with the Jackson movies. Those scores truly are remarkable. And honestly, most composers working under the shadow of those colossal scores from Shore might try something imitative and, unfortunately, come up short. With the money they are throwing at this let's hope they come up with something truly epic when it comes to the music.

As much as I love Howard Shore's music for LOTR and The Hobbit trilogies, I kind of feel like it's enough. There is at least 20+ hours of his music spread across the theatrical and expanded editions of these 6 movies, averaging 3 hours per film. Honestly, I'm ready to hear a new musical stamp for Middle Earth.

What would be really interesting (if they do it completely new) is to tell all the current Zimmer trends to F off and go full force into a Celtic style of music that Tolkien himself might have imagined. Find local Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English folk bands that play at Renaissance Faires and have them collaborate to make something that matches the folk poetry of LOTR with their style of music. A dash of orchestral flair as well like the album with the Tolkien Ensemble Feat. Christopher Lee. But not like that dull and drab Misty Mountain song from the Hobbit movie. I love Howard Shore, but that song was a misfire in my opinion. Ya feel me?!

Ya feel me?! Except this series recounts Númenórean and Elven affairs during the 2nd Age, all prior to Shire happenings recounted in the 3rd Age (as seen in The Hobbit and LOTR), so, no, I don't see (hear) a soundscape a la The Chieftans being at all suitable for the setting. Tolkien still based them on Old English / Old Norse mythology, and let’s throw a bone to Ancient Greece so let’s bring that in as well. Make it a global effort of folk groups around the world to match Tolkien’s influences.

George Kallis, Bear McCreary, Nicolas Britell, Sarah Schachner, Anne-Kathrin Dern, Abel Korzeniowski...

Not sure if its been mentioned already, but with J. A. Bayona directing the first two episodes, would it be too much to hope that he would push for Fernando Velázquez to score the series? I've been seriously impressed with a great many of his scores over the years. He has proved himself quite adept at a huge range of movie genres and isn't afraid of a big sweeping symphonic score. I'd kill for Debbie Wiseman to get a huge gig like this, as I think she'd absolutely blow everyones socks off, if given the opportunity. Otherwise I'd prefer they go with someone completely left-field or up-and-coming instead of the usual old reliables who keep getting all the high profile jobs. Maybe someone like Tom Howe, Daniel Pemberton, or Christopher Willis......

Velazquez would be a good choice but Christopher Willis should get a shot at this. I like Pemberton but I found his music for 'The Dark Crystal'-prequelseries severely underwhelming.

David Downes for Irish / Celtic, Eve Goodman for Welsh, James MacMillan for Scottish, Kate Havnevik for Nordic, Pierre Yves Lenik for French, Vangelis for Greek. Get them all to collaborate and create a distinctive musical landscape like what would have inspired Tolkien and what he would have envisioned, with a common thread linking all of them. That would be epic and wonderful. Everyone doing their best in their part, with an agreed-upon thread linking it all together.
