The theme/gimmick was never designed to support the compassionate, earnest character Godot ended up turning Wonder Woman into, and my hope is that Zimmer might, miiiiight have the good sense to realize that.

I so agree with that statement. I hate that Wonder Woman motif which sounds to me like a pack of feral cats locked in a tight cage that are ripping each other apart. I'd like this heroine to have a fully developed theme that is elegant and heroic, kind of like the Avengers' theme or Williams' Superman theme. (Or for that matter, the wonderful theme Zimmer gave Crowe in Gladiator.) I'd like to see Zimmer veer away from ambient noise and return to his power anthems.

This is true. Which is why it was good that RGW wrote such a sweeping, emotional, and moving score, only occasionally featuring that motif.

Here's hoping! I'd be down for some power anthems to go with WW84. Man of Steel had a lot of ambient noise (which I loved), but also more in the way of soaring power anthems (which I also loved).

I'm not crazy about this, but I guess the good news about Zimmer doing it is that he's the one person who'd probably have the authority to retire his own Wonder Woman theme (the way he more or less retired his Batman Begins theme in Dark Knight). I'll grant that the cheesy heavy-metal cello thing was fine for what it was in Batman V Superman, where the music only had to accompany a badass pose, not a fully-developed character. But man, every time it pops up out of nowhere in the actual Wonder Woman movie it sounds hysterically out of place, like a drunk Nickelback fan stumbling into the wrong theater, crushing beer cans on its head, and screaming, "G'itterdun! USA! G'itterdun!"

I agree with this entire post. That electric cello riff doesn't really compliment the superheroine, imo. It's hysterical that the general public seem to believe that it's easily one of the most memorable superhero themes (even though it's not really a theme or motif) ever. And that it's somehow able to stand toe to toe with Williams Superman and Elfman's Batman themes. I don't think so.

I actually prefers the motif in Wonder Woman than BvS. I think Wonder Woman is basically what I envision BvS should have been if Zimmer went a more classical approach to try to incorporate the theme.

But either way, I think Zimmer's motif is the only thing that made that score truly have some memorable value.

I don't think anyone with any sense of music thinks Zimmer's theme stand toe to toe with Williams' Superman theme on a technical level. Or Elfman's Batman themes. I also agree that it is not even comparable because it is basically a riff more than any theme. And yes, it would be great if Zimmer can develop something more out of the character than just that riff, but there is also no denying it is instantly memorable, and in today's superhero music world, that is saying something. I keep thinking about all those complex, orchestral ("elegant and heroic") Marvel scores, and yet after 13 movies, the only thing people remember is probably 10 seconds of that Avengers theme, which ironically, was criticized for being too Zimmeresque.

Joan is right also that I would kill for a Gladiator style WW score. Some sort of power anthem. As it is, I just glad that Zimmer is attempting to do something that sets the character apart, even though the end result is far from ideal.

Both comments perfectly stated. Couldn't agree more!

While I don't care for the score to the first WW film, they should have stuck with composer continuity, considering fans of the film liked the score.

My wife and I both LOVED the film (barring the dumb ending confrontation) and we both were very disappointed in the score overall.

Yavar

I love the film and the score other than the generic action music. Most of that I cut out.

Interesting. I think it arguably apt since its his theme and he can work with it. I`d try variations without electric guitar (not dissing the incidence of such in the original necessarily, just curious to hear conventional instrumentation on it).

Gregson-Williams's out:

Zimmer's in:

PS: Since someone, whose name rhymes with "Shmeve Shmevor", is returning, perhaps a combo heroic/love motif could be employed a la "Superman's Theme". I look forward to a battle theme for Wiig, cuz why not.

Zimmer on WW 1984 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meL6GcFWqYA. Just noticed that Zimmer is scoring two female superhero films...

Surprised nobody is talking about this since the trailer has been out since Sunday. I'm hoping Zimmer comes up with something impressive for this sequel since most of his DC scores (especially from the DCEU) doesn't do much for me.

Well Zimmer and Junkie XL came up with the Wonder Woman theme in BVS which was developed in her solo movie which has now become iconic.Im sure he will do a good job with 1984.

And just how EPIC is that New Order remix in that trailer? Wow!

Couldn't agree more. Great trailer, great version of the tune, and well doesn't she look great too? I saw a poster for the film, maybe it was a teaser, and got the impression she wouldn't be wearing the iconic costume. I remember the 60s or 70s version was white suit. I don't mind if she has more than one outfit, as long as the traditional one stays too. I hate it when the take the characters I grew up with on the printed page and completely change the look. Variations I can live with as long as the original is still around.

Loved the first one. Fingers crossed for the sequel. Seen this trailer quite a few times now.

Loved the first film and Gal. This trailer was kinda meh. Got no feels out of it. Don't care for the silly new outfit. Hopefully the film is a lot better than it looks.

Actually I thought she looked amazing in that angel thing. Maybe I'm getting sidetracked here. Sorry folks. Can't help it if she's a great looking Gal....

I really don't give a toss about this or any other superhero films. But I AM quite excited about the prospect of hearing Zimmer go '80s'.

Here is the armor that inspired the gold look:

I think it is a pretty good interpretation of the armor. Definitely curious to see what she goes up against that inspires her to wear the armor. Cheetah presumably.

I wonder if they’re holding off with the Cheetah reveal due to the reaction to the CATS trailer....?
