Even more excited by THE VIKINGS than the forthcoming James Bernard scores which I Will buy also. Eventhough he certainly can afford to buy one, I hope someone at Tadlow will send the 101 year old Kirk Douglas a special complimentary CD. I am sure it will make his day.smile

I've never seen the film nor heard this score before. After listening to samples of the opening theme, and one more, I have to say I REALLY LIKE THIS! It is 'melodic' in it's very own distinctive way that reminds me of Tiomkin's sense of melody for his theme to 'High Noon'. That may not make much sense, but that 'Viking' theme is so memorable!

Great bonus, to have the fine Barabbas theme. The original soundtrack recording is awful. A pity there wasn't room for a suite, but the theme alone is still splendid to have.

I am also completely unfamiliar with this score. But that video sold me and I ordered right away. Looking forward to hearing the full release.

See the film to really appreciate the music.
"Dancing on the Oars" is probably the single most memorable movie music scene of our childhoods, for us oldies who saw the film as kids.

This was on TV alot in the 1970s. I can only think of 3 Kirk Douglas peplum-type movies, and I'd rank them for accessibility or general entertainment value:
THE VIKINGS
ULYSSES
SPARTACUS

VIKINGS is sort of a dark flipside of SPARTACUS (a comparison suggested by Kirk and Tony Curtis being in both).

James, is it possible for you to post a hi-res version of the cover, or provide a link to it?

My copy arrived this morning. Listening to it now, and it's glorious, especially the choral passages! A huge upgrade from the suite recorded by Silva back in the day, and the terrible sounding original soundtrack.

Because life, I just got around to ordering today. Both my wife and I are really looking forward to it...it was the first film music she "noticed" when she was a kid.

I totally love that the album keeps the completely loopy, non-grammatical cue title "Violences and Rapes of the Vikings" as it appeared on the Legend CD (and I assume is the title from the cue sheets?) - obviously written by someone with limited English language skills.

Not a criticism, but what is it about Italy that in cue titles and movie titles that they always prefer 12-15 words when 2 or 3 would do. Why not "Viking Raid" or something similar? Italian movie titles are often long-winded: "Even If I Wanted to Work, What Would I Do?", "Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August" , "Have a Good Funeral My Friend...Sartana WIll Pay". US and British tiles do this rarely as a gimmick, but this seems very common in Italy. Sometimes US movies titles are changed to these long-winded titles, to often hilarious results: the Italian title for "Risky Business" translates to "When the Old People Are Away, the Sons Dance." big grin
What is up with that?

Ok, so here's one from left field.

Does anyone know anything about a single - 45rpm vinyl record - by the Mike Sammes Singers (or someone similar) of The Vikings theme, from the 60s? I remember a recording of The Vikings theme that was sung with the actual 'The Vikings' motif actually vocalised, as "THE VIKINGS" by the group in question. Yep they actually sang "the vikings...the vikings...", to that motif that is obviously spelled out in music just like (appropriately enough given Tadlow's next gig) James Bernard's Dracula theme.

It was played at a friend's house in the 70s, when I was but a kid. I did think it was bizarre then, and not being able to find it on YT.... I just wondered.

I'm listening to it now & it sounds great, although that's hardly news. I bought James Fitz produced The Fall Of The Roman Empire & The Alamo earlier this year, so I knew what to expect. I think I'll break out my Blu-ray of the film & watch it tomorrow.

I love the sound and the work that went into bringing this recording to us golden age fans. It took me back 60 years across a continent to the Loew's Valencia in Jamaica, Queens,N.Y.
