I'm always taken by surprise by the passing of some of our giant composer/musicians in recent times. There's a bit of whiplash after the passing of LeGrand. Andre Previn has a generous history of music he has left the world. His was a name I knew early in my young days of soundtracking. I hope everyone new to him will explore some of his enormous output. "Two For the Seesaw" is one of my favourite scores of his. Those main titles in the film itself are magic. The "Second Chance" song was an Oscar nominee and sung in the film by Jackie Cain, and I love Sammy Davis Jr.'s version (talk about sexy and haunting). I'm now playing his LP "Andre Previn Plays Music of Young Hollywood Composers" on which there's a nice collection of heavyweights such as Mancini, Bernstein and LeGrand that are interpreted. I like Previn's take on The Pink Panther, To Kill A Mockingbird, "A Million Bucks" from Johnny Williams TV series "Checkmate" and particularly Previn's own "Livin' Alone" from the film "The Moving Target" (as written on the back of the record sleeve) --- Never heard of this film until I discovered it was the British title to "Harper" -- It's the nightclub song dropped into the middle of Johnny Mandel's soundtrack. This "Young Hollywood Composers" LP came out in 1965 on the RCA label and doesn't look like it ever got a CD release. And it's as good a place as any to get seduced into Previn's many works. The "Young Hollywood Composers" is available on Amazon. Unfortunately there are no composer credits nor a credit for "Johnny" Williams who arranged the LP. Bare bones packaging but better than nothing. He recorded a few LPs for RCA around this time. One is "Andre Previn with Voices". This never made it to CD but the entire album is available on Youtube. Another is "All Alone", a solo piano album. I always enjoyed his album with David Rose titled "Secret Songs For Young Lovers" which introduced his composition "Like Young".

This LP highlights Previn's versatility by including tracks from GIGI, INVITATION TO THE DANCE, THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, and THE SUBTERRANEANS. It's not available on CD. In checking my collection, I find that Previn is represented in some capacity on 25 of my albums.

Yep, he was classy and a really good sport, unlike some. He was my introduction to Shostakovich, for which I’ll always be grateful. A towering musical life. Now listening to his recording of Shostakovich's Fifth with the LSO.
