Have to apologize for my comments about Andre Pevin but it still rankles what he said about JW wasting his time writing music for film. But I know Williams' love for Mr. Previn. Saw it when Mr. Previn was a guest with the Boston Pops. John Williams almost was teary eyed when he tried to tell Previn how much he appreciated him but Mr. Previn cut him off.

So I apologize again.

I'm always taken by surprise by the passing of some of our giant composer/musicians in recent times. There's a bit of whiplash after the passing of LeGrand. Andre Previn has a generous history of music he has left the world. His was a name I knew early in my young days of soundtracking. I hope everyone new to him will explore some of his enormous output. "Two For the Seesaw" is one of my favourite scores of his. Those main titles in the film itself are magic. The "Second Chance" song was an Oscar nominee and sung in the film by Jackie Cain, and I love Sammy Davis Jr.'s version (talk about sexy and haunting).

I'm now playing his LP "Andre Previn Plays Music of Young Hollywood Composers" on which there's a nice collection of heavyweights such as Mancini, Bernstein and LeGrand that are interpreted. I like Previn's take on The Pink Panther, To Kill A Mockingbird, "A Million Bucks" from Johnny Williams TV series "Checkmate" and particularly Previn's own "Livin' Alone" from the film "The Moving Target" (as written on the back of the record sleeve) --- Never heard of this film until I discovered it was the British title to "Harper" -- It's the nightclub song dropped into the middle of Johnny Mandel's soundtrack. This "Young Hollywood Composers" LP came out in 1965 on the RCA label and doesn't look like it ever got a CD release. And it's as good a place as any to get seduced into Previn's many works.

I have recently "binge listened" to IRMA LA DOUCE and still can't get enough of this one. Just fantastic.

Thank you for your music. R.I.P., Maestro Previn.

"A true Renaissance Composer" - R.I.P Andrew Preview!
Remembrances of a fine concert performance by himself featuring Anne Sophie Mutter with the London Symphony Orchestra!

Anne Sophie Mutter was Previn's fourth wife.

The "Young Hollywood Composers" is available on Amazon. Unfortunately there are no composer credits nor a credit for "Johnny" Williams who arranged the LP. Bare bones packaging but better than nothing. He recorded a few LPs for RCA around this time. One is "Andre Previn with Voices". This never made it to CD but the entire album is available on Youtube. Another is "All Alone", a solo piano album. I always enjoyed his album with David Rose titled "Secret Songs For Young Lovers" which introduced his composition "Like Young".

This LP highlights Previn's versatility by including tracks from GIGI, INVITATION TO THE DANCE, THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE, and THE SUBTERRANEANS. It's not available on CD.

In checking my collection, I find that Previn is represented in some capacity on 25 of my albums.

Yep, he was classy and a really good sport, unlike some. He was my introduction to Shostakovich, for which I’ll always be grateful. A towering musical life.

Now listening to his recording of Shostakovich's Fifth with the LSO.

We all think of him as an American composer, with the jazz element a prominent signifier. He is not often classed with the emigrés of the so-called golden age. Yet that is what he was. German was his native language (maybe with some Polish or Yiddish thrown in). What would his career have been like had the young Andreas Ludwig Priwin been allowed to grow up in his native Berlin? Would he have discovered jazz anyway? Franz Wachsmann did. There are so many imponderables in the tortuous twentieth century's musical history.

Incredible!
I always thought he was. French born Jew who emigrated.

Seeing as how he didn't much care to be remembered for the movie industry side of his career, he would probably be fairly pleased to have very narrowly avoided having his picture included in the "In Memoriam" segment of last Sunday's Oscar ceremony.

If there are really serious fans here, this Previn box came out a short while ago and is absolutely brilliant - sound, performance, everything. One of the all-time great boxes. Here's a link. Cannot recommend highly enough.

https://www.amazon.com/Classic-Andre-Previn-ANDRE-PREVIN/dp/B07D51864Y/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=andre+previn&qid=1551505643&s=music&sr=1-1

Don't pay the Amazon price, however - you can find it elsewhere - I got mine for 129 bucks and some of the third-party sellers have it for that, or try Walmart or Best Buy online - I think mine came from Best Buy. Original album art front and back, and CD art replicates the original Columbia/RCA labels.
