Haha. Bravo Sean.
I am guilty (although not here in this thread or on this forum) of complaining about 'screechy violin' ruining so much classical music I've heard.
Even when listening casually to Classic FM, I will turn the dial slightly over to Smooth FM if that screeching is getting too loud or obnoxious wink
I'm neither a music professor or snob. I just like what I like and I'm turned off by certain things in music, like anyone else.
I haven't sampled any of these tracks yet, but had planned on getting the deluxe edition for the extra tracks and the DVD.
But yeah, the reactions around here can get a little too personal or hysterical, especially lately.

That's wonderful, Sean.

The collaboration could simply be a form of intellectual homage born out of frustration from two people who had a form of deep personal connection with a late other, and this is the only option available to them to redress some kind of deep seated irreversible lost cause. It's like a sort of musical "Rosebud," loose end the living have addressed on behalf of the departed. A musical link forged as a bond of remembrance from two of music's high achievers. Not everyone can do something like that. I don't actually have the work available to me but believe me, whenever I gaze upon it I think, Previn.

But Mutter is intentionally playing in a fragile, risky, hesitant and therefore not always beautiful way.

What i’m hearing is the opposite of frigile. Mutter seems to over shout any emotion, which makes it harder to humanise anything she plays.

Really been enjoying this album lately. Love the new interpretations to all these great JW tunes. Hope there's a volume 2 at some point. smile

Sorry if this has been brought up somewhere else, but as a heads up to the fellow Germans on this board: 3Sat is broadcasting Mutter's open air concert in Munich playing John Williams with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Newman starting 20.15 MEST.

Details on the concert (in German) can be found here:

I have not yet heard much of this album, but Anne-Sophie-Mutter is giving (pretty much the album program) as a concert today in the evening in Munich, Germany, conducted by David Newman, so I'm going to watch that.

I think Sean already said it all. This is a world class violinist giving interpretations (in arrangements done by Williams himself for her) of John Williams music, and Williams himself has the highest praise for her interpretations, so at least he does not think his music is done injustice.

In any case, I am looking forward to the concert and I'm glad these arrangements don't try to just duplicate what has been done but show different facets of the music. Mutter's performances don't tend to be slick, and not everything may be to everybody's taste, that's fine, but they are usually of the highest skill.

I've expressed my slight reservations about this album earlier in the thread, but hey -- if you have the chance to go to the concert in question, or watch it online or whatever, then please do. Any Williams-related concert is worth watching.

I am not there tonight, unfortunately, but it is broadcast on TV, so I'm watching it there.

I have actually seen John Williams himself live in concert a couple of times, and of course, those concerts were a lot of fun. I think I still have at least one ticket stub as a souvenir. :-)

I've seen him live twice too, although my "Holy Grail" mission to interview him was abandoned a couple of years ago. As I like to say -- it's easier to invite the pope out for a beer in Rome.

Ok... this is more or less right after tonight's (above mentioned) concert, so take this with a grain of salt...

This was a concert, broadcast (almost... there was a delay at the beginning to accommodate for the break) live from Munich, Germany, of John Williams' music:
David Newman conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with Anne-Sophie Mutter performing the violin. There were a couple of delays and perhaps three or four (less then a second but noticeable) dropouts in sound.

It was the most impressive concert of John Williams' music I ever heard. Ever. And I heard him conduct his own music live.

I'm not sure about the criticism about Mutter in the recordings mentioned here, which I have not yet heard, but I can say this: I am deeply impressed about what I heard tonight.

I mean, I listen to a lot of music (when my time allows for it), film music, classical music, jazz music, and whatever... often, though not always, I'm doing something else as well. It's walking, reading, driving, being somewhere, whatever... there is some music that DEMANDS full attention or else. All of Mahler's music, for example. I cannot for my live listen to Gustav Mahler while doing anything else... or it just sounds awful. Mahler demands full attention. Beethoven... maybe, but I know most of his stuff so well, I can even listen to Beethoven while driving, sitting at the beach, whatever, simply because I know it in-and-out... Mahler, who may be my favorite composer... demands always full attention, or his music just does not make sense and starts to annoy. And I deeply love Mahler's music (which is somewhat ironic, since Mahler is ultra-romantic music, and that is usually not the type of (classical) music I favor).

Tonight's concert of John Williams' music performed by David Newman conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Anne-Sophie Mutter performing the violin was really putting the music into the foreground. This music was not meant to be listened to while painting your porch or reading the newspaper or driving to work or commuting by train or whatever else it might be that you do while listening to music... this music was meant to be listened to while doing nothing else but listening to the music... and then it became great. Anne-Sophie Mutter's skills are without question, but the astonishing thing to me appeared to be that she deeply loved, enjoyed, and enveloped herself with the music. This was no go-for-the-cash performance, and no here-go-the-bells crowd pleasing bravura performance (ok, there was that... like "Witches of Eastwick" etc, which were done as terrific bravura showcase... and that's how it should be). This was some of the most: here, listen to this!-type of John Williams concerts I have ever heard. Ever. Go David Newman, go Anne-Sophie Mutter. And go John Williams. They played DRACULA and CINDERALLA LIBERTY, but no JURASSIC PARK or JAWS.. so that was pretty cool.

I think the bottom line is: I really enjoyed the concert tonight. :-)

(No, I don't have anything against JURASSIC PARK or JAWS, I think they are fantastic, but I have heard them often, even in concert, and usually performed assured and without surprises.... CINDERELLA LIBERTY I had never heard in concert before, much less in such a powerful and at times risky performance.)

I think that the reason that some people do not like the album is that the themes are so extremely familiar that totally changing them stylistically can be a shock that is not favorable. The new arrangements will likely grow on people over time.

Sarcasm straight ahead...

Yeah the reason some people don’t like this album is because it a hit and came in No. 3 on the charts. People will complain to complain about a Big Nothing. You know most DO NOT know the Back Story Of John Williams, Andre Previn And His Wife At the Time Anne Sophie Mutter. Check it out before you big ass babies cry and pout over Zero. Must hand it to Some Members here, Acting like the Old Cold Boston Audiences...Old And Cold To What Williams wanted to do for His Close Friend Andre Previn...

Sometimes Change is Good.

Such a bizzare series of bizzareness.

Two pieces that really shine in Williams’s new arrangements: The Duel from Tintin and especially Princess Leia’s theme: he’s worked some imaginative new voices into the orchestrations and rebalanced everything to make it a compelling showpiece for violin.

I hope there will be a follow up album that might include Witches of Eastwick, Jane Eyre, and Han Solo And The Princess.

I like the bonus tracks. It's a much better album. Oddly, I've got it on physical CD and it lasts 83 minutes, which I didn't think was possible.

The Deluxe Edition is here at Johnny's home!
Boy, I'm enjoying it big time!
(...and I totally agree with Ed above about "The Duel" from Tintin being one of the highlights!)
