I have added the rest of the episodes, picking up at "The Peeping Blonde". Scott McOldsmith, in that highlight, Steve and Barney fight bad guys who were in a van, to get a red box. Barney goes too far and Steven has to stop him. YUP! That's exactly the scene. "It's wild, Steve! It's WILD!" Love that episode and the music is just incredible.

Finishing SEASON 2:
"Look Alike" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5l3dfr (in French) Highlights: 1:25 in. 3:35 in. 7:19 in. 11:20 in. About 32:00 in. 34:43 in. 36:40 in. 41:35 in. "The E.S.P. Spy" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60psti Highlights: 0:00 in. 4:24 in. 7:07 in. 24:43 in. 29:25 in. 32:45 in. 34:59 in. 36:22 in. 43:21 in. Joining a cue already in progress for the action music. "The Bionic Woman: Part I" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71o3gh (sorry about the load quality) Highlights: 0:00 in. 10:33 in. 17:22 in. I'd probably skip this one on a set of season two scoring. 20:55 in. 29:56 in. 35:56 in. 46:07 in. Montage cue. 48:33 in. Steve said in a prior episode it took a year to make him bionic. Jamie had what looked like one day of surgical work. "The Bionic Woman: Part II" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x71o3gj (sorry about the load quality) Highlights: 1:44 in. Joining a cue already in progress. 4:23 in. 20:15 in. 22:35 in. 26:13 in. 39:20 in. 50:35 in. 6:17 in: Unless it is just repeated material and not a tracked cue, this is probably from "Taneha". I don't want to double back to compare cues. If it's original and just re-uses ideas, then yes, add it as a wanted highlight. I'm considering whether or not to do the spin-off show, since there has already been four CD's covering nine episodes. "Outrage in Balinderry" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kztez Highlights: 1:25 in. 4:13 in. 24:06 in. 37:17 in. About 38:20 in. Over seven minutes long. "Steve Austin, Fugitive" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5lem3p (in another language; volume is lower on this load and the sound quality is lacking) Highlights: 4:52 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 14:03 in. [li15:09 in. 22:51 in. 26:11 in. 28:05 in. 31:08 in. Over three minutes long; there's a bad edit during the music, so we're not hearing all of it here. 35:29 in. 44:09 in. Load cuts off early. I don't care if another season set is five CD's long!

About 39:50 in. 41:43 in. "The Return of the Bionic Woman: Part 2" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5nre92 Highlights: 1:24 in. 5:53 in. 11:53 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 26:00 in. 30:08 in. 31:57 in. 33:16 in. Over six minutes long. 45:05 in. Please, please, please stop that "singing". Jamie: "What every woman wants: a bionic finger nail." NO [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "The Price of Liberty" By: Oliver Nelson "The Song and Dance Spy" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzsq7 Highlights: 12:25 in. About 14:29 in. 15:39 in. 20:09 in. About 26:45 in. 29:29 in. 36:40 in. NO [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. (NOTE: I've found nothing but mislabeled videos at the proper speed for some of season three, so don't waste your time; I've already wasted mine for you) "The Wolf Boy" By: Oliver Nelson That's it for today. Tomorrow: other composers join the series.

"Gotta Get Loose" and "Sweet Jaime" are great songs! They're catchy as hell, they added a whole new dimension to the show, they made "The Bionic Woman" an even more unique and unforgettable SMDM episode, and they stayed special because, despite having worked out great, the show didn't let Lee sing ever again. Those songs are an indelible part of The Bionic Woman's awesomeness. I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Finishing SEASON 3:
Volume is lower on all loads this season (different channels). Once again I've encountered a lot of mid-labeled videos for season three. Trust me, I looked; if an episode isn't covered, there was no good load to be found (I am skipping slowed-down loads). "The Deadly Test" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzseq Highlights: 0:00 in. 4:11 in. 9:03 in. 11:00 in. 13:!3 in. 25:14 in. 28:25 in. 29:49 in. 33:38 in. 36:41 in. Nearly six minutes long, and for a good stretch fast and furious percussion. 44:25 in. Guest-starring Erik Estrada. Oliver Nelson died of a heart attack about a week before this episode aired -- cut down at the shocking age of 43. Despite his death, he's still credited on a number of episodes afterwards, including this one; I suspect there were already scores in the can. As I write this I am already two episodes down and I have yet to hear anything I readily recognize from a prior episode, which cements my belief in already-completed scores (though I can't rule out other composers ghosting incomplete efforts). NO [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "Target in the Sky" By: Oliver Nelson "The Bionic Criminal" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzs4h Highlights: 1:23 in. 3:10 in. 10:16 in. About three minutes long. 22:52 in. 26:28 in. 31:52 in. 33:51 in. 44:15 in. Joining a cue already in progress. And the cue after the commercial break. Barney, the "Seven Million Dollar Man" returns for his second and final appearance. "The Blue Flash" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzrpk Highlights: 8:56 in. 10:39 in. 12:43 in. 14:50 in. 15:25 in. 16:11 in. 18:44 in. 29:24 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 35:10 in. 40:58 in. 44:14 in. Damn, that creepy-stache has become a full-blown porn-stache. "The White Lightning War" Music Score: Benny Golson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzrwb This is the only effort by Golson for the series. Highlights: 3:43 in. Banjo-lead southern-style music. 5:08 in. 8:36 in. More southern-flavored scoring, with banjo. 9:58 in. 15:20 in. 18:28 in. 22:05 in. 39:35 in. Good God, he's gone from porn-stache to full-frontal beard-O to boot! "Divided Loyalty" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzric Highlights: 4:07 in. 11:25 in. 20:36 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 31:29 in. 34:05 in. 34:44 in. 40:53 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 44:50 in. "Clark Templeton O'Flaherty" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzrbs Highlights: 1:23 in. 9:00 in. 11:50 in. Abut three minutes long. 20:14 in. 24:32 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 36:44 in. 38:40 in. About 41:30 in. 44:10 in. Thank goodness -- the porn-stache and beard-O combo is gone. "The Winning Smile" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzs2v Highlights: 1:23 in. 6:18 in. 11:50 in. 14:02 in. 20:30 in. About 36:50 in. Joining a cue already in progress. 39:30 in. Joining a cue already in progress. NO [GOOD] LOADS FOUND. "Hocus-Pocus" By: Oliver Nelson "The Secret of Bigfoot: Part 1" By: Oliver Nelson and Luchi De Jesus "The Secret of Bigfoot: Part 2" By: Oliver Nelson and Luchi De Jesus https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzrmu (38:54 This is the final effort by De Jesus for the series. Yup, just two episodes. I'd say they must not have been happy with him, but he was working on "The Bionic Woman", so who knows; maybe he was too busy to do more of this show. Highlights: 12:31 in. 19:49 in. 26:45 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 30:00 in. 36:25 in. 42:47 in. 44:19 in. De Jesus was a odd choice. Better choices would have been: John Parker, Andrew Kulberg, and Morton Stevens. And considering his funk-a-licious work on "Baretta", even Tom Scott[. Ah hell, why not all of them! NO [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "The Golden Pharaoh" By: J.J. Johnson "Love Song for Tanya" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzslr Highlights: 18:16 in. 34:44 in. About 37:00 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 4613 in. 2:17 in: Is this existing classical work? What a dire turn in the scoring. NO [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "The Bionic Badge" By: Oliver Nelson This is the final episode Nelson is credited for the score on. From this point onward anything you hear of his is a track job and he's not credited. "Big Brother" By: Bobby Bryant https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6kzsk5 Highlights: 1:25 in. 2:06 in. 4:07 in. 3:47 in. 11:07 in. About 16:00 in. 20:50 in. 25:02 in. 28:48 in. 30:36 in. If I had to pick a composer right now just based on the first Johnson score above and this first one by Bryant, I'd have preferred Bryant to stay onboard. Normally a brass player on sessions, Bryant had very short scoring career -- literally -- this is only one of three works on his IMDb page! He died in 1998. The addition of cartoon sound effects in these last two episodes has been ... very disappointing. Good lord, these last few episodes; Big Foot, more aliens, and the final episode babysitting a youth ... what the hell happened to this show? It's pulling a later-seasons "MacGyver"! Well, to be fair, Angus never encountered any [outer space] aliens (if there had been one more season, who knows!).

SEASON 4:
No [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "The Return of Bigfoot: Part 1 " By: J.J. Johnson "Part 2" was on "The Bionic Woman" (one of the scores that was released) "Nightmare in the Sky" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60upnt Highlights: 3:25 in. 7:10 in. 13:22 in. 19:08 in. 21:58 in. 23:58 in. 26:26 in. 32:14 in. 36:24 in. 42:18 in. 43:18 in. Guest-starring Dana Elcar (once again in a position of power and once again that position is governmental). I bet back in the day before all the security, he could have put a suite on and waltzed into random governmental facilities and no one would have second guessed him. "Hey, aren't you Dana Elcar?" "No," laughs, "I get that all the time. Carry on." The creepy-stache needs to go. "Double Trouble" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60uqyh Highlights: 2:54 in. 27:48 in. 34:24 in. 42:06 in. The spotting is terrible. One cue went over for I think over ten minutes and most of the time I was thinking: Stop. Mute this. These scenes don't need music, especially lethargic music. "The Most Dangerous Enemy" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60upt7 Highlights: 7:59 in. 17:03 in. Joining a cue already in progress. 26:03 in. 30:48 in. Joining a cue already in progress. 33:18 in. That acting in the climax ... dire. "H+2+O = Death" (4.5) (3.6 By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60upuq Highlights: 1:26 in. 21:19 in. Joining a cue already in progress. for the cool stuff. And the cue after the commercial break. 40:40 in. I could be wrong, but when he breaks the door down, I think that may be some tracked Nelson score. More dire acting. No [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "Kill Oscar: Part 2" By: Richard Clements "Part 1" and "Part 3" was on "The Bionic Woman" (Harnell did both those episode scores) "The Bionic Boy: Part I" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60uq0b Highlights: 0:00 in. 4:39/6:26 in. 19:14 in. 22:53 in. Short cue. 29:22 in. About 35:10 in. "The Bionic Boy: Part II" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60uq1z Highlights: 1:23 in.. 25:08 in. 28:00 in. 30:40 in. Over nine minutes long. Thank goodness this didn't lead to a Bionic Boy spin off. "Vulture of the Andes" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60ur7y Highlights: 0:00 in. 6:55 in. 9:40 in. About 15:40 in. 21:47 in. Maybe this short cue can be tagged onto another one. 24:07 in. 25:33 in. 27:27 in. 33:24 in. About three minutes long. 39:20 in. 43:45 in. No [GOOD] LOAD FOUND. "The Thunderbird Connection" By: J.J. Johnson "A Bionic Christmas Carol" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60ur9h Highlights: 1:26/29:52 in. Screams Christmas, doesn't it? (sarcasm) 16:16 in. 22:20 in. 31:27 in. 42:01 in. And the cue after the commercial break. Episode synapsis: Yawn, snooze, snore ... boring. ZZZ. (25:32) "Task Force" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60uran Highlights: 2:01 in. 6:26 in. 10:52 in. 17:14 in. 20:54 in. 23:46 in. Continues after the commercial break. 25:27 in. 29:15 in. 34:00 in. 41:00 in. "The Ultimate Imposter" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60urcg Highlights: 6:52 in. 30:03 in. 40:47 in. Out-of-context quote... "Come on, Joe, you love it. It's fun." "Death Probe: Part I" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60ureq Highlights: 4:59 in. 19:01 in. 35:45 in. 42:15 in. Heavy FX. Whaaaa??? You mean the Death Probe isn't the future of war fare??? No, say it isn't so! It only looks like the bastard child of the vehicle from "Damnation Alley" and a Dalek. "Death Probe: Part II" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60urga Highlights: 5:03 in. Heavy FX. 13:18 in. 17:06 in. 19:20 in. 26:59 in. 37:00 in.* 44:11 in. * = Even the regulars had given up on acting at points, as you can hear the line, "Oh no, his arm gave out" is a clear winner of the Calculon Unholy Acting Talent! award. "Danny's Inferno" By: J.J. Johnson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60uri2 Highlights: 4:25 in. 9:54 in. 24:38 in. 28:34 in. 34:28 in. 37:02 in. 39:37 in. 44:13 in. Honestly, I can't tell if Johnson is aping Nelson's material or if there are tracked cues. I just can't spend the time going back over just over four seasons of cues to make comparisons. I can't finish the season today.

If the show had gone on another season, we'd have gotten Steve's new partner: the bionic dog. And another season after that: the bionic alien. Or even bionic-mite.

If the show had gone on another season, we'd have gotten Steve's new partner: the bionic dog. "The Bionic Dog" was the two-parter that opened The Bionic Woman's third season. As drama it was well done, but it just wasn't technically plausible, or it was less plausible than the human bionics.

BTW, does anyone know offhand which episode of SMDM Oliver Nelson essentially plagiarizes himself and uses the same exact theme he used for Columbo's "The Greenhouse Jungle" episode? I'd like to know that. Did everyone know that the sunny, upbeat running theme for Steve and Jaime in "The Bionic Woman" Part 2 (top of Act I) was actually a re-recording of Nelson's main title to DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER? And that's one of my favorite musical scenes of the series. As long as Nelson wrote it and Universal owned it, nobody was going to cry foul! You can hear it really well in the "Taneha" episode... Let's see if Justin's got it mentioned... I LOVE that DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER theme!
|
|
|
|
|
"Taneha" By: Oliver Nelson https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x60pso9 Highlights: 0:00 in. 1:52 in. 4:21 in. Upbeat piece with some kind of percussion instrument that kin of sounds like finger snaps. A little over a minute long. 8:24 in. More of the above material. These two cues would naturally lend themselves to being combined. 14:03 in. And the cue after the commercial break. 17:50 in. 23:50 in. 28:20 in. 28:52 in. 33:45 in. 38:35 in. There's a bad edit over two minutes into the cue, so we don't get to hear the whole thing (looks like the scene is it went to, is cut early, too). As I was saying, 4:21 onwards is a rearrangement of DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER, and it's great. I must admit that I dip into those musical highlights, but spending hours of my life watching the show seems less and less appealing nowadays. I'll have to dip into a few of the JJ Johnson highlights. I can't remember his work on The Six Buck Man, but I'm kind of surprised at Justin's negative comments. Maybe it's not that good after all, but I do like Johnson's scores to ACROSS 110th STREET, WILLIE DYNAMITE etc. And being one of the best jazz trombonists in history must have left at least something positive. Back later!
