I was under the impression there are only 4 Gerhardt Dutton Vocalions?

----------------------------
There are 5: Herrmann, Rozsa, Waxman, Flynn and Tiomkin. They all sound spectacular in 5.1 SACD, better than any previous version. I hope they'll do more of them.

The only original quadraphonic LP yet to be released by Dutton-Vocalion is the Casablanca/Humphrey Bogart album. If Dutton wants to release any others, they will have to be from the stereo mixes, or Dutton will have to jerry-rig the surround sound, like RCA did with their Dolby versions.

Yes, thats the only one left for Dutton if they want to puruse this. I did email Dutton label for more releases but didnt get a specific reponse. They are at this moment tied up with all other releases. But I have the 5 of their GERHARDT SACD releases and would defintely recommend them to others who like this format. Otherwis,e stick to the Sony reissues or the new boxset.

Thanks. I have the 5. I was using my Rozsa Conducts Rozsa Dutton Vocalion in place of the Gerhardt - which I do have but forgot about (sacrilege I know).

All covers share the same artwork as the box cover, with just the titles different.
There is no booklet.

I’m using the yellow covers for my iTunes library, until some nice soul comes up with something better on the custom covers thread.

I got out my Lost Horizon yellow CD, Vocalion CD and this iteration CD.

I then got out by Sony Walkman CD player with Sennheiser HD231i headphones. Per this arrangement the order of quality was Vocalion>yellow CD>this latest Sony release.

But I prefer the Vocalion releases anyway. So some bias there perhaps - also from the mechanical bias in the setup.

All the info about the box was talked about earlier in the thread. Sony has released a number of boxes in this series in the last 3 years and they are all pretty much the same.
Of course they are stereo, they are exactly the same mastering as the releases from 8-9ish years ago.

I've gotten a lot of these RCA boxes since they started putting them out a few years ago. The first one I bought had a booklet, so when the next one arrived without a booklet I thought I must have received a defective set, but in time as I acquired more of them it became apparent that the powers that be decided to economize by dispensing with booklets for these wonderful and economically priced collections.

Was it "Chartles Gerhardt - topic"? If so, that's an official upload.

Still, it's not as if there's anything novel about the release. The recordings have been around for almost 50 years. The specific masterings for almost 10.

I can see the titles posted on youtube via my smart tv but cant play them because of the country restriction. Bit Im sure they are sourced from the same remastered set because the same artwork from tbe box set is used.

IKorngold's main theme slices through the texture like the prow of a ship through angry seas.

Wow, John, have you thought about writing a novel? smile

It's a wonder I haven't ground out the groove after putting on Waxman's Rebecca for the zillionth time as I did earlier this week. Gerhardt the conductor is to film music appreciation what Tony Thomas the writer is to film music appreciation. Pioneering legends, they.
