My issue with the selected Varèse artwork is two-fold:

1. it looks like a crop job of a full-length comic book cover.

2. image leads (this Westerner's) eye leftward, not rightward.

****

Never was a Whedon fan, so Firefly/Serenity never caught on with me. (Farscape meanwhile…all those Guy Gross scores just sitting there down under.)

I didn't even bother bringing up the composition.

Ironically there's a better cover to be had in that style.

Aside from the awful cover art, I am all over this release as the score is quite shiney!!!!

NOW... if we could eventually get a complete series score set... now THAT would round out this collection perfectly!

Maybe if this 2CD set sells like crazy we can at least hope for Varese considering a Deluxe Edition of the series music by Greg Edmonson, since they released the original album. They did a 2CD Deluxe Edition album for SeaQuest DSV, after all…

I just noticed mine too, but I've never heard of that aspect of a photo. Why is that a negative? Is it something like the rule of thirds?

“The package features brand-new art by acclaimed illustrator Matt Sheean“ … lol
The man creates art for comic books, and that’s exactly what it is: comic book art. And sorry to be so harsh, but there’s even much better comic art out there than his work. He clearly doesn’t know how to make eye-catching artwork that is worthy of a deluxe CD release. Can't really blame him; he was just wrongly hired by Varese. They were like: "Oh, let's go for paint-by-numbers cover art, that'll please the fans!"

And Firefly/Serenity isn't a comic book, in a way? Did I miss a meeting?

Its bad composition when characters or faces leads off the page. And I see this 99% of the time in graphic design nowadays. There's also no focal point and the art lacks a main subject. Plus that tower in the background is in direct center of the image which again is bad composition. The more I look at it, the worse it gets outside of the artists style.

Yeah, definitely don't like the cover art. And they are missing some of the characters.

That being said, mine should be here tomorrow, and the cover art won't ruin the listening experience.

While I’m not a fan of the artwork......

I thought The Firefly was kinda the visual main subject and the characters were looking towards the (unknown) coming threat.

But what do I know?

That’s just what i saw when I looked at it.

Plenty of fan art out there to replace it - I’m happy to have the music.

I have never seen FIREFLY nor SERENITY, but I like the cartoon cover. It sets the deluxe edition apart, and elevates it optically from tie-in to stand alone music release. The artwork style reminds me of Hergé, which I think is very coo. I will pick up this release since it's David Newman.

I would love this - it would also likely encourage people to pick up this album too.

I love the show and the film. In fact, I just rewatched the series on Disney+, and then the film after that. They still hold up (regardless of how Whedon was and is as a person). There are bits and pieces in the Edmonson score for the series that are interesting, but also some rather cheap-sounding affairs. The Newman score is OK, but nothing terribly striking in terms of themes and the like. I'd be willing to give the soundtrack another chance.

100% agree. There should have been a multi-disc set already, and since 2023 was to 20th anniversary of the show, it wood have been the perfect time.

I worry that the Disney purchase of Fox might be a stumbling block for Varese. Wasn’t an issue for the film because it’s Universal.

Received mine, and am listening to it now. Lucky to be able to, though.

Whomever handles the shipping for Varese must have taken lessons from the gorilla in the old Samsonite luggage commercials. The CD was in a regular manila envelope with no padding, and was folded over and held closed by a piece of masking tape. I barely had to touch it to have the tape come off and the envelope open.

The jewel case looked like it was attacked by Reavers. It was cracked and broken, and the CDs were just lying in the mess of shattered plastic (even the center spokes that hold the CDs ere broken). Fortunately, the CDs weren't damaged, and are playable.

Here's another custom cover to add to the mix.

Wow. First time seeing this thread, and that cover art is certainly an interesting choice, to say the least.

It reminds me of a young children's book cover for "The Story of Serenity (for ages 4-7)"...

Either that or a read-along book from the '70s/early '80s: "When you hear the Reaver wail, turn the page!"
