What really sucks about this is that people will think Desplat got the job because of Twilight and will suggest the Potter films are just trying to emulate New Moon's success. Safe to say we know better as the New Moon score was unquestionably was much, much better than the film it was attached to.

I think Desplat will use Williams' themes - I would love for Hedwig's Theme to be developed, instead of just tacked on as a franchise signature. Let us hear it in an action setting! I also hope Desplat is given the chance to score a lenghty End Credits piece as his last two fantasy efforts (New Moon and The Golden Compass) have ended with awful and inappropriate songs, whereas Potter films have never gone for such teeny-bopper nonsense (although GOF came very close with Jarvis Cocker's source songs), yet have never had a worthwhile, through-composed End Credits piece.

I wonder if Desplat is working on this right now? Listening to The Ghost Writer, it seems that Desplat can really use brass in a convincing way, something that Hooper was definitely lacking in his scores.

I heartily agree the Hooper scores are - to be kind - barely serviceable

While I'm no HP auteur, a friend of mine did make an astute point: Hooper got the short end of the stick where he scored the two books where nothing really happens. Theres one major event at the end of Half Blood Prince and thats it!

where do you see this "innocence and sense of wonder" in the last several books?

Its in JK Rowling's writing style. Anyone whos read more than a milk carton will find it exceedingly vacuous. :rimshot:

Right now I'm rubbin' my lucky rabbits' foot for Williams to score Part II. Hope-hope. Anyone ever see "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" during the taxi scene? Kinda like that.big grin

I'm wondering if Williams will be back too. David Heyman said in an interview about a month before Desplat was confirmed for Part I that they were hoping Williams would be back for Part II. He specifically said Part II, which at the time seemed strange (i.e. why wouldn't he say Part I). Perhaps he knew at that point that Desplat was already signed for Part I, but they were hoping to get Williams back for Part II. Whilst I would love for Williams to come back, it seems strange to me that they would get two different composers to score parts of the same film.

It was tough cutting down my all-time favourite scores to 3. Other composers missed the cut, as did other Williams scores. ET is my all-time number one score, if the film is on I drop everything to watch it.

Regardless of the quality, or lack thereof, of Rowling's writing, there's no good reason for a composer to be scoring these films as if they were cutesy innocent stories anymore. It's out of place and totally unnecessary.

Kind of old news but Desplat at Cannes said this about the JW theme, (it has been translated)

"We will start this summer, it will take me all summer, I will not have many holidays, but again it's for good reason, for the soundtrack. I would take every opportunity to use the fabulous theme written by John Williams, I'd say it has not sufficiently used in the latest movies, so if I have the opportunity and if the footage allows me, I'm going to arrange it, to give it another meaning... Well, I have no obligation to use it but I shall make it with great honor and pleasure."

'Half Blood Prince' is playing on HBO right now and after watching this again I am starting to get a little excited for the final two films. Never really was a HP fan, nor have I read the books, but I really enjoyed the cinematography and score from 'Half Blood Prince' and can't help but think that Yates will get some great stuff from Serra and Desplat.

can't help but think that Yates will get some great stuff from Serra and Desplat.

Eduardo Serra and Alexandre Desplat both worked on "Girl With a Pearl Earring", with the results being outstanding. Serra received an Oscar nomination, and as far as I'm concerned he should have won (Desplat did receive BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations, but alas they didn't translate into Oscar recognition). So I can't wait to see what they both do with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". Obviously, despite the film being split in half for its theatrical presentation, Serra worked on the whole project, so there will be continuity in the cinematography, but I definitely hope this ultimately applies to Desplat as well (ie that he also scores 'Part II').

The official website (and every other entertainment site) has the official trailer for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" up. It's a trailer for both parts... and sources tell me another trailer will hit a few months later focusing on Part One.

This is definitely going to be Desplat's biggest project to date, and put a measly vampire movie in its place. I just hope WaterTower Music will do pressed CDs instead of going the digital/CDR on demand route.

Given Desplat's past scores, he justs keeps getting better and better. This score will definitely not disappoint.

+1
Desplat is my favourite composer at the moment. Williams has ostensibly retired and no one else generates the same enthusiasm towards upcoming releases except for Desplat these days. this is going to be a terrific score I think.

Couldn't agree more. Desplat is the number one composer for me these days even if a lot of people (especially in the US) seem to find his style underwhelming. He continues the tradition set by excellent French composers like Delerue and Jarre. Now if only Philippe Rombi could get his foot in the door in Hollywood. He's written some gorgeous music.

As MattyO pointed out in the previous Potter-related thread, the new ABC Family promo for "Deathly Hallows" treats the film as one complete film. Ostensibly, Desplat is the sole composer credited with the cast and crew at the end.

So Scott, does that mean Desplat is scoring Part Two as well?

I sure hope so.

I think given the popularity of the series, it's almost a sure bet they'll release this normally.

Does anyone know if Desplat is recording the score at Air Studios or Abbey Road Studios? Obviously Desplat's used Abbey Road for Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Golden Compass and a few others, but he recorded New Moon at Air Lyndhurst.

I know it's a small detail, but could anyone answer that?

Well, the studio screened a rough cut of Part One in Chicago. One reviewer said that several scenes, as well as the title cue, were temp-tracked with Zimmer cues.

I hope that doesn't 'influence' Desplat's final score. I'd hate to see a Zimmer-'influenced' Desplat score, especially in a Harry Potter film.
