Well I always rip with EAC and like Gracenotes it doesn't read the information from the CD itself but someone has to upload the data to the database once they enter it on their own. I was very glad when I saw that someone had already posted the information for Masada Intrada 2CD when I got my copy so I didn't have to enter that, but for many kritzerland releases or other CDs I get, I have to enter it on my own because it isn't there. I then upload that information to the server so the next person can have it for them when they pop in the same disc (assuming there isn't a disc ID collision, which happens quite a lot on FreeDB).

my point is the track titles were somehow embedded on the disc as they are for most labels. That's what I don't understand - or is iTunes just something wholly different?

There are two different technologies at work here. Track titles embedded on a disc are a function of CD-Text, which not all that many CDs seem to have. My car can read CD-Text and display track titles on the screen.

But iTunes does not read CD-Text. Instead, it relies on track titles being in the Gracenote database, which it searches for online when you insert a disc. The Gracenote database is entirely user-generated, so until somebody has input the track titles and uploaded them to Gracenote (which I suppose a record producer could do before the discs go out, but I've found they rarely do), nothing will appear in iTunes.

Yes. It's both the blessing and the curse of the technology, as some well-meaning people put in the information incorrectly (listing the performer as the composer, for instance), misnaming titles, or, which is worse, three or four listings come up for the same CD.

I had an absolute mess on my hands when I ripped the Coens' 'True Grit' to my iPod, which already had the Tadlow version on it. Now the tracks are intermingled...argh. I get track 1 from Burwell...track 1 from Bernstein...track 2 from Burwell...track 2 from Bernstein....it's not the best dichotomy in the world.

Just change the name on one! I labeled the Coens' version "True Grit (2010)," and now iTunes doesn't intermingle them.

Well, I don't know from any of this stuff, so if I was wrong about who enters what, apologies, although someone is entering something somewhere.

I too would like to see the COMPANIONS IN NIGHTMARE score rescued from obscurity, especially given that the film itself is missing in action.

Are the tapes still around?

I rip CDs to my computer and for transfer to my MP3 player using Windows Media Player and the same thing goes there. Very rarely is there information in the Microsoft music meta services database for just released soundtracks. I usually give the album its title, the composer's name and the genre and then wait until later to update the track titles once someone has entered them into the database (I'm very lazy when it comes to entering track listings). Sometimes nothing is ever entered there for a release.

Okay. You all can thank me as I got the CD today and entered ALL of the track info into Gracenote. I probably have carpal tunnel syndrome now.

Gentlemen and "gentle"men, and any ladies within earshot, I think you will enjoy this release if you love Benny.

I have yet to find a Bernard Herrmann score (television or motion picture) that I haven't enjoyed. I'm really, really, really looking forward to this one.

Varese should be commended for saving these scores for posterity.

Has anyone had a copy shipped specifically from SAE? My online account with them still does not indicate a tracking number, so I have to assume that they haven't yet shipped my pre-ordered copy (although they cashed my check for it on June first).

I'm glad to hear that others are receiving it.

Mine arrived in the UK yesterday,7 days (a 1st from Varese) after shipping notice & now listening to it on the train on the way to work. Stunning music and quality. Herrmann certainly poured as much care and attention into these as well as his Twilight Zone scores as he did his film work. This is a great release

I played cd 2 in the car today and just marvelled that there is a new release of truly classic Benny out there.
