too sad to see it's not a 3-cd set with the third disc full of alternates of the songs smile I would have paid 40$.

The original soundtrack release of this great score is just fine. Not worth 30 bucks for another twenty minutes and a copy of the original album on disc 2 which i already own.

Pass.

From what I have read at the exclusive review (link posted above) the producers opted to include the source music as a part of the score since they were conducted by James Horner himself and are a part of the story. Also its confirmed that the the reason we have the OST replicated on disc 2 is that is an exclusive album mix down by Shawn Murphy. Whereas the film score is a separate film mix. These tweakings thus justify the presentation of disc 2 with the album program which in my opinion is a great sounding album on its own and its quite perfect. But disc 1 with all the new music in film sequence will be worth it. Also, the reviewer has also alluded to the fact that Intrada has improved the sound quality in comparison to the OST cd should be enough for any hardcore fan to NOT pass this one up.

A voice of reason. Thank you.

Although the spoilt children will hardly listen or agree.

The sonics on the original disc are amazing. And so the "improvements in sound quality" compared to one that was already so good is bound to be a highly subjective affair.

I would not agree that if you are a fan of the original score you simply must buy the new one.

Why denigrate people with different opinons? Not everyone wants the same thing, and no thread on this board need represent a single monolithic opinion. People who want this release have good reasons to get it, and those who don't have good reasons not to.

I too am satisfied with the existing album, especially since I have found myself less and less interested in listening to expansions of other scores I've purchased in recent years. Plus the additional samples do not convince me I need to hear more. And I'm satisfied with the audio quality of the original.

But this opinion is not an insult to everyone who is thrilled with this release, it's just a different perspective.

it could also mean that the entire film score including the songs in its chronological order is an entirely different mix exclusive to the film itself. Whereas the album was a reworked commercial album.

Amer, thank you for being the voice of reason. The pop songs did indeed have a separate film mix and album mix, so including the songs twice on the set is completely valid and the proper thing to do. I had not considered before that the pop songs could be any different between their Disc 1 and Disc 2 versions (and the press release doesn't say so either).

Personally, I would have moved the film mixes of the pop songs (along with The Laughing Bandit) to be bonus tracks after the OST presentation on Disc 2, leaving Disc 1 to just be Jamers Horner's glorious main score, but that is something easy enough enough to make happen on my own.

Mingling the pop songs (and the concert arrangement) into the main flow of the main program is an artistic choice Intrada had every right to make.

Thanks for talking some sense into me smile

I'm just really grateful. It's one of the few scores from the past 25 years I was actually looking forward to being remastered and expanded. Considering Horner's untimely passing, being one of his greatest scores, this constitutes a real tribute. Thanks again, Intrada.

Unlike a lot of expansions, this score contains distinct musical ideas not represented on the original album. The samples on Intrada's site mainly represent the music we already heard. Frankly I think this is going to be one of Intrada's best sellers.

I hope its a huge seller for Intrada. It's my favorite James Horner score and to finally have the complete score is such an incredible thing.

Also, I hope it means a release of Willow complete is possible, since both scores are Disney ones (now), and the Willow OST was released by a label now owned by UMG.

Where in the score/film are these distinct musical ideas? I may watch the film again with them in mind to see if I'm missing out on things I'd like to hear away from the film.

I ordered this as soon as they announced it, but I thought it would be a no-brainer to give the orchestral score a full CD while placing the 1930s-era songs, the Laughing Bandit material, and the original album on a separate CD.

IMHO the people clamoring for this release from a specialty label are score fans, and while it's easy to make an edited playlist on our devices, I think we were all hoping for a clean break of the material on the CDs since this is likely the only expanded release we'll ever see of this.

Of course I hope this is a huge seller for Intrada. But I do get why some are finding the old release sufficient. As it happens I listened to it for the first time in years just a couple of weeks ago and certainly didn't find it too short (though I enjoyed it). I wouldn't be surprised I eventually give in and buy this, but for now, I'm pretending I'm going to resist.

From memory, the Laughing Bandit, Neville and Eddie themes, testing the rocket, the Nazi propaganda music. (which I don't see in the track list) Note: Edited post.

BTW do we get the Nazi propaganda music? I don't see it in the track list.

No Nazis, no newsreel. I think I'm OK with that.

Including pop songs because they are conducted by the composer in the main mix is like including source cues in the main program because they were conducted by the composer. Of course it is personal preference and some people don't find the transition to source cues (commonly bar/tavern music) as jarring as I do. But this is why we have the ability to rip everything and re-order it however we want. But if I was in a situation where I wanted to listen to the CD in a quiet room without turning on my computer, I would find myself at that point wishing the pop songs were put on disc 2. Thankfully that second one doesn't happen so often.
