I have not seen Season 3 (but intend to next month, when I can stream it here). I was always somewhat skeptical about a third season, as -- obviously -- the original series had a story arc which was set up, told and resolved in two seasons, the story was "finished". It was always supposed to be a two season show.

Once I begin watching the first two series, I'd like to do an episode-by-episode-and-music review thing. I may be alone in that endeavor, but with just sixteen episodes it won't take much time at all, depending on how I arrange my viewing schedule; mustn't binge something like this.

Strange how a popular and critical hit series like BB isn't discussed here more, but then that's always been the tragedy of FSM. wink

I'd be curious to see how much music is in the original miniseries that isn't on the original 2-disc album.

I kind of got the sense that they might have reused a few score cues over the course of the 16 hours, but I'll bet there's score that's not on the score CD. Also, each episode has a different cover version of the theme song over the end titles, which I loved, and I don't think any of those are on the CDs, or maybe just one or two are.

Did I mention that I dig the instrumental version of "Alphaville"? I especially like the slowed-down bit starting at 1:25.

Did you buy the album Ferry did for The Great Gatsby, it's very similar, modern pop songs arranged as jazz instrumentals:

I love that album, as well as Bitter-Sweet and The Jazz Age.

Some years back I was among the few who were enthusing over Baz's The Great Gatsby, not to mention Craig Armstrong's beautiful score.

Ever see this "making of" The Jazz Age feature? It also goes into Ferry's contributions to Gatsby:

Nachtlied is aptly named, as it evokes the (loneliness of) night. A hauntingly-beautiful piece; can't wait to hear it in context (no spoilers, please):

Many of these cues get used multiple times in the miniseries, (I can't tell if it's the same recordings repurposed, or just the same themes) so there's often not really one context for them. A few cues are from specific scenes, but many appear quite often. This one is a lovely theme. smile

I didn't think the reusing of cues was still prevalent in contemporary TV shows. Not that I mind, as the 1960s and '70s shows I obsess over frequently have stock music.

The music in BB is of such a high quality, I will look forward to hearing it.

For anyone in the US wondering what Babylon Berlin is--and I'm sure it "must" be everyone--here's the show's Netflix page:

Someone in the YouTube comments section mentioned the similarity between "Zu Asche, Zu Staub" and Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" More for the world-weary spirit than anything.

My Babylon Berlin "S1-S2" Blu-ray arrived last week. I was out of town, so I haven't started to watch it yet, but I will begin this Saturday; I'm looking forward to the show!

I've been listening to the soundtrack frequently since February(?), so it will be fun to finally hear the score in context.

I'll bump this thread in vain with my wee thoughts on each episode/score; I sincerely hope fans of the series will join in with their thoughts. After all, everyone else has had three years to see this thing, whereas I'm strictly Johnny-come-lately.

Season 3 felt like a rushed cash-grab in every way, and the music was no exception, tragically. I listened to the original album many, many times, but I listened to the new CD once and filed it away on my shelf.

S3 out on Blu-ray and DVD November 24, 2020:

Won't put in a pre-order until I see S1-S2...still happy BB has a US DVD release, though!

A BB visual effects demo thing.

"This reel showcases the visual effects work created at
RISE | Visual Effects Studios

Led by RISE VFX supervisor Erik Schneider. As building a single set representing all of Berlin is impossible, lots of set extensions needed to be built following the architecture of the pre-WWII era and famous sites were recreated that were destroyed during the war based on photographic reference. Cars were animated, trams needed to speed through the streets and thousands of CG crowd digi-doubles made the city come alive."

BB is just an amazing show!!!

I was supposed to wait until this Saturday, but I allowed myself a 20-minute "sneak peak" of the first episode, and I am already impressed.

It's perplexing why BB hasn't been discussed here at FSM. I'm tempted to lie and tell the Mainstream FSMers that the show is packed full of spaceships and other nerdy tropes, just so someone besides a few of us will watch it.

What did you think of S3? Others have been lukewarm on it.

Currently we are watching Season 3 and it's still an excellent show; we're halfway through now. It's a "genuine" sequel, as it continues some threads of the (otherwise finished) first, most of the major characters (who didn't die) and many of the minor ones return. Not finished watching it but so far it's quite good as far as "sequels" (and that's what it is) go.

My Blu-Ray arrived a few days ago too. I checked and it looks a lot better than the Netflix stream I get.

Be aware through, since this series was filmed 25fps for PAL broadcast, the American BD slows it down by 4% for NTSC. It's unavoidable, US systems can't play 1080i/50, which is the format used in Europe to release local 25fps TV on BD.

Each episode gains about 2-3 mins in running time, the video is slower and the audio pitch drops a tiny bit.

This is the first BD anywhere in the world with English subs though, so it's the best available.

I've been aware of PAL releases or UK shows having that issue, but it's not something I've ever noticed; I'm observant that way, or maybe I've just mellowed with age. wink

Tomorrow begins my BB "journey."

Back in the DVD days, they didn't bother with it, they just let the PAL shows run at their native speed and the frames didn't really match, causing PAL-NTSC ghosting of individual frames.

With BD/HD, they couldn't be that lazy, so they just slow down the HD master.

The streaming masters are not slowed down though, Babylon Berlin runs on Netflix USA at its natural speed. I've watched it twice there, I'm curious to see how it'll look on the BD.

Years ago I agonized over DVD releases. Not the NTSC-PAL issue, but rather content and music edits, which I still consider the most egregious of sins.

BB's visuals are among the best I've ever seen for a TV series. Part of the show's appeal is how it augments my obsession with German art and the pre-WWII era.

I have a feeling that Gereon Rath will be just as fascinating a character as Don Draper of Mad Men--the latter being the greatest character and show I've ever had the pleasure to watch.

Based on the brief excerpt I've watched of BB, the score is going to accompany the show brilliantly.
