Just heard the sad news on the radio: Michel Legrand passed away at the age of 86. Over the last years he dedicated himself more to concert music, publishing for instance two concertos, one for piano and one for cello.

Thanks for your talent and dedication, a whole life full of music!

Another of the greats gone.
RIP M. Legrand. Thank you for all your music.
I particularly like a recording Michel did with his long time collaborator, Catherine Michel for orchestra and harp. Terrific version of The Go-Between.
Other favourites: Summer of '42; Picasso Summer; the Other Side of Midnight; the Three Musketeers; Robin and Marian (It would be interesting to see Twilight Time produce a BD with the Legrand score and the Barry score as alternates. Not sure though if Barry scored a different edit to that given to Legrand.); finally, what I think of as his masterpiece, Ice Station Zebra.
While I enjoyed some of his jazz inspired scores, I tended to find them a little raucous in places.
However, M. Legrand had a phenomenal range to his scoring abilities and for that we should all be grateful.
Nice obituary in The Guardian today.
Stan

Vladimir Cosma's tribute to his Maestro:

Dave, let's hope you will find the 4 CD long box LE CINEMA DE MICHEL LEGRAND you're searching for because it's outstanding. Something striking with Legrand was his talent to write overtly joyous and enthusiastic stuff: in the Jacques Demy movies of course but also tunes like the main theme from THE PICASSO SUMMER. Not every film composer has this ability.

Hi Laurent, sorry if I confused you, I do have the 4 cd set and it is stunning (just like the Delerue 6 cd set), but it does seem difficult to obtain now which is a shame.

Folks, the passing of MIchel Legrand has filled France with deep sadness. Its like losing John Williams.
He was viewed as an icon and a legend. His burial will take place at the Père Lachaise cemetery next friday.

The compilation on which the Musketeers suite appears (linked above) is on Spotify for those who have premium or other access. Listening now.

Dave, my mistake. I indeed didn't bother reading again your post which was very clear.
It seems some people on this board know Legrand only or mostly through his score to ICE STATION ZEBRA. Well, I'm not a Legrand specialist but I'd say that there is so much more to it within his large output! Like Dave, I therefore definitely recommend the long box LE CINEMA DE MICHEL LEGRAND in order to discover many other aspects of his multifold talent.

As stand alone musical experience, I got acquainted with Michel Legrand's music courtesy of FSM: "Ice station Zebra". a wonderful score I play many a summer when at work. Then I got "The Thomas Crown affair". Both soundtracks are incredibly stylish and ultimate 60s cool (for lack of better word but since Steve McQueen is involved, I let it slide). I doubt whether "The Thomas Crown affair" would have been the epitome of cool if it hadn't had Legrand's music.

My absolute favourite though is "Wuthering heights" absolutely stunning and beautiful. For some reason it has become Christmas music to me, and it always works for me, time without fail.

Thank you very much for your wonderful Mr. Legrand, rest in grandeur.

D.S.

I'm enjoying his disc of the piano and cello concerto. Some Rachmaninoff inspiration in the former.

The very creative and excellent unused score he did for The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973) :

The last and very recent Universal France 20 CDs box-set seems to be sold out now :

https://edition-limitee.fr/index.php/10-c-d-vinyle-edition-limitee-edition-collector/2987-michel-legrand-coffret-collector-20cd-moulins-de-son-coeur-vinyle

There might be a new pressing though, but with Universal we never know.

So if you see it somewhere at a decent price (90 euros was the regular price in France), don't hesitate.

Back in stock soon at Fnac.com :

https://musique.fnac.com/a12953996/Michel-Legrand-Les-moulins-de-son-coeur-Coffret-CD-album?omnsearchpos=1

But it may be just a remaining stock from their supplier since it seems to be unavailable elsewhere.

In case you don’t lay hands on the recent 20 CD box, maybe you can find the previous release, including 15 CD’s :

https://www.amazon.fr/Anthology-coffret-15-Michel-Legrand/dp/B00F570JN6/ref=sr_1_9?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1548760213&sr=1-9&keywords=michel+legrand&refinements=p_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A381044011

https://www.universalmusic.fr/2170-le-coffret-evenement-anthology-de-michel-legrand.html

I have it and can say it offers a similar range of Legrand’s activities.

However I guess the '20 CD mammoth' should be back in stock soon.

I think the same, it would be very surprising if Universal didn't make a new print, especially now.

Is this the set that has Cassanova on it? I had heard that one of these sets has it on there. Been trying to license it for release for years but could never track down the licensor. Or elements. Kind of two showstoppers!

He and John Williams were close friends.
He stated in a radio broadcast a few years ago that John Williams was his "big brother".

For anyone in LA, the March 3 Kritzerland show is a Legrand tribute.

Revisiting THE HAPPY ENDING in the FSM SOUNDTRACK TREASURY box.
Lukas added tones of material to this one!

Not something I would have bought individually but much here to enjoy.
Has something of that free-wheelin jazzy feel of WIND.

Check it out!
