The thing is, Johnson's music was often barely even serviceable -- it's like he didn't put too much effort in. And when the music was good (regardless of serviceable or not), Nelson set such a high bar that Johnson never reached. Even if Johnson had gotten a bionic leg.

You can hear it really well in the "Taneha" episode... Let's see if Justin's got it mentioned... I LOVE that DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER theme!

I'm glad you mentioned that. I'll be returning to that episode after a multi-decade hiatus. smile

Finishing SEASON 4:

"Fires of Hell"
By: J.J. Johnson
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x555rkq

Highlights:
  • 0:00 in.
  • 0:59 in.
  • 4:22 in.
  • 8:38 in.
  • 9:35 in.
  • 14:13 in.
  • 18:30 in.
  • 21:58 in.
  • 27:59 in.
  • 38:17 in. I think the opening until the cymbal splash, might be tracked.

The most enjoyable score so far by him.

    "The Infiltrators"
    By: J.J. Johnson
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x555rp3

    Highlights:
  • 1:23 in.
  • 21:51 in.
  • 33:11 in.
  • About 38:40 in.

Now that the series has de-evoluted from what it was, we have gotten an obligatory boxing episode.

    "Carnival of Spies"
    By: J.J. Johnson
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x555rv5

    Highlights:
  • 1:23 in.
  • About 6:30 in.*
  • 21:25 in.
  • 34:55 in.

    * = Watching this, it occurred to me: Why didn't Steve just run across the lake? We've seen him go just over 70 MPH in one episode, so we know he can go fast. And "Mythbusters" has shown that at 80 MPH, they could get about 300 feet into a lake:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYB7DYWI4G8

So he could make a long leap, and hit the water running. Or even use himself as a skipping stone.

    "U-509"
    By: J.J. Johnson
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x559jnc

    Highlights:
  • 0:00 in. Over five minutes long.
  • 6:42 in.
  • 44:44 in.

That's all that should be released from this episode score.

"How many times do I got to kill that man?"

    "The Privacy of the Mind"

    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x559jrt

    Highlights:
  • 1:23 in.
  • 8:03 in.
  • 39:23 in. I believe after the lull is tracked Nelson score.

Goldman "Sometimes one hunch is worth three intelligent decisions."

    "To Catch the Eagle"
    By: J.J. Johnson
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x559jwn

    Highlights:
  • 1:23 in.
  • 8:35 in.
  • 20:41 in.
  • 25:08 in.
  • 27:00 in. Indian source music.
  • 28:37 in. String-heavy piece and atypical of the music of the series thus far.
  • About 37:00 in.
  • 40:56 in.
  • 44:46 in.

I had to double check to make sure Johnson was the credited composer.

    "The Ghostly Teletype"

    Highlights:
  • 1:49 in.

    "The Infiltrators"

Now that the series has de-evoluted from what it was, we have gotten an obligatory boxing episode.

And at no point during the match does Steve's hair budge. He never breaks a sweat.

    SEASON 5:

There are no more new composer; from this point on it's all names you've seen before, until the end of the series.

    "Sharks: Part I"
    By: J.J. Johnson
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x55cr7g (volume is not as loud on this load)

    Highlights:
  • About 3:30 in. I swear I heard a water chime twice. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 9:43 in. A little over four minutes long.
  • 14:06 in.
  • 17:00 in. Takes a minute for the good stuff to kick in. Think I heard a water chime again. Just over five minutes long.
  • 24:12 in.
  • 28:22 in.
  • 35:08 in. Yeah, it's a water chime all right. And the cue after the commercial break (also uses, repeatedly, a water chime). Over nine minutes total for both.

Controlling sharks. They didn't just "jump the shark", they controlled it.
Is Stefano DiMera behind a bulk head or something?

Guest-starring "John deLancie" (Q from various Star Trek spin-off series. This is one of five episodes he did, playing a different character each time. Can say I recall him in it though! He's in the second part, too (didn't spot him there either).

    "Sharks: Part II"
    By: Bobby Bryant
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x55crcs (volume is not as loud on this load)

This is the final effort by Bryant for the series.

    Highlights:
  • 5:05 in.
  • 16:37 in.
  • 22:13 in.
  • 25:07 in.
  • About 28:20 in.
  • 34:06 in.
  • 36:38 in. Over six minutes long.

That obvious model sub is obvious.

    "Deadly Countdown: Part I"
    By: J.J. Johnson

    Highlights:
  • 1:23 in.
  • 2:32 in.
  • 12:32 in. Over seven minutes long.
  • 20:50 in.
  • 29:24 in.
  • 32:46 in.
  • 34:36 in. Over eight minutes long.*

How many fucking times do we have to see Bigfoot on this show?!

Fuck. If they're going to do this, might as well make it a "Bigfoot and Wildboy" crossover and just put the final nail in the coffin of the series.

    * = The amazing bouncing large heavy rock -- bounces right off thin trees!

    That's it for today.
Tomorrow I'll finish what episodes I can do of the series, then move on to the TV movies (if any of them are up).

I actually liked Bigfoot V, mostly because it’s light, quick and only one part. Hard to believe the “exciting climax” consists of Steve and Sasquatch rolling down a hill in slow motion. The level of acting in this series has dropped like a weighted stone. “Sunshine sand and bikinis…” This was, finally, the last time we see Bigfoot.

I liked Deadly Countdown a lot, especially the end of part 1, with the footage of that truly horrific rocket crash. I do get this one confused with Dark Side of the Moon, though. The brains behind this whole epic story, "Cyborg" author Martin Caidin, plays the bald guy on the boat…with his voice overdubbed really badly.

Season 5, the year Lee Majors traded his mustache for his Fall Guy hairstyle.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned. In part 2 of the Bigfoot saga, it concludes on the Bionic Woman. That episode is scored by Joseph Harnell. The climax features a nice mix of of both shows main themes and oddly enough, some Incredible Hulk music! If you listen to the scene where Jamie & Steve run you the volcano, you hear some of what would become the Hulk theme.

Whaaaa??? You mean the Death Probe isn't the future of war fare??? No, say it isn't so!
It only looks like the bastard child of the vehicle from "Damnation Alley" and a Dalek.

A bastard child between the Damnation Alley landmaster and a Dalek !!??
LOL! Excellent, I couldn't have said it better!
This Probe is awfully clumsy, noisy and ridiculous...to say the least...

By the way Justin, many thanks for your huge and painful job of listing all the music highlights from the whole series' episodes.

Hope this can help to catch the attention of the Powers that Be that there is a real need and request from the fan base for this music to be released.....at the very least the Oliver Nelson stuff.

One question haunts me? Did somebody around ever considered to just ask Lee Majors himself whether he could be of any help with this possible soundtrack release issue? He is the star of the show after all and his support would be immensely appreciated...

Yup, Joe Harnell used music from Part two of "The Return of Bigfoot" in The Incredible Hulk episode "The First."

I watched part one of “Sharks” last night (part two tonight) and liked the music – and the episode – a lot more than I expected. While it was obviously a way to cash in on the JAWS popularity of the day, it was a fairly solid Six Mil episode (Pamela Hensley – later to wow on Buck Rogers - was also a draw for this young man).

DeLancie is the diver who reports back to Steve, Oscar and the General when the first team couldn't approach the sub because of the sharks.

I can’t comment on the music from the “Sharks” episodes because I don’t think could sit through them again. I watched them once a few years ago and they were a chore to get through. The entire heart of the show was gone by season 5. I actually like a decent number of episodes in season 4 but I’ll admit, it was a different show by then. He even stopped wearing the khaki outfits all the time!

Yeah, but the Mustache Season also had Steve in the same blue jumpsuit most of the time. He had zero personal life in the final two seasons and was all "the job." However, the 5th season at least finally jettisoned the stunt casting and went back to straightforward action adventure. Humor was in shorter supply as Fred Freiberger and Allan Balter alternated episodes as producer. I liked this season based on the fact that they took the corny humor and celebrity guest shots out of it.

    SEASON 5:

Johnson's work this season has improved; when he kind of had a chance to do his own thing, he fell into a better groove.

Some of the episode loads are mis-labeled; ignore what they say --- I have the correct load under each episode.

    "Killer Wind"

    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6157lp

  • 38:36 in.

Re-used footage from one of the "Death Probe" episodes, of people getting onto a bus.

    "Rollback"

These last three episode scores may require some judicious editing to present the scores in better possible lights (and also make room for more better material from other episodes).

    "The Cheshire Project"
    By: J.J. Johnson
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x561bd0

    Highlights:

  • 3:41 in.
  • 8:34 in.
  • 11:10 in.
  • 15:35 in.
  • 19:30 in. Don't be fooled -- it sounds like the music is coming to an end, but then action material quietly builds over four minutes long. And the cue after the commercial break.
  • 35:56 in. Almost eight minutes long.*
  • 44:34 in.

    * = Oopsy doopsy -- you can also see the shadow the helicopter following the two planes and filming them.

  • 30:22 in.
  • 34:17 in.
  • 37:47 in.
  • 38:55 in. Also uses a water chime. Just over four minutes long.

Pretty sure the closing cue of the episode (not cited) is from a prior episode in this batch.

Now it's easy to spot John de Lancie.

  • 10:26 in.
  • 15:10 in.
  • 44:16 in.

There's very little scoring in the episode.

    "The Lost Island: Part I"
    By: J.J. Johnson
    https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6157uc (correct)

UGH! More aliens! This season can seriously fuck off.

    Highlights:
  • About 4:40 in. Might be tracked Nelson material.
  • 9:56 in.
  • 16:54 in. Cue cuts off when the show goes to commercial break.
  • About 21:55 in.
  • 25:23 in.
  • 37:25 in. I think there might be a small amount of "Sharks: Part I" tracked in.
  • 42:07 in. Mixed low to the commercial break. And the cue after the commercial break, which is essentially just the cue continuing; a proper combining situation.

And in some instances ("Vengeance Unlimited" for example) I've already seen the show.

A bunch of synth stuff, walking the 1990's Mark Snow sound line. Nothing particularly special and really not much of anything that deserves to be released. A big let down from the series music and an even bigger let down as the last installment in the original franchise.

Steve: "You keep going and I'm gonna want a cigarette."

Steve: "You go first; I love watching you wiggle." (to Jamie)

Steve: "You know we're definitively getting too old for this." (to Jamie)

    REMAKE MOVIE:

As of today the long in Development Hell feature film, is plowing ahead in preproduction. Travis Knight is the director. No release date is known right now and no composer has been announced. However, this would be his third film as a director and the prior two were scored by Dario Marianelli.

    ADDITIONAL/UNCREDITED/STOCK MUSIC COMPOSERS:

No additional composers listed at BMI or ASCAP.

  • Don Granbery.
  • Harold Mooney.
  • Mark Snow. (given how he and Ramin have worked together on various projects, this shoudl be additional material for that one TV movie Ramin scored)
  • Irwin Coster. (listed with long-deceased classical music composer Johann Sebastian Bach, so this was probably source music arranging)
  • Carl Brandt.
  • Dick DeBenedictis.
