Spartacus is one some of the greatest, El Cid is in the same league and i prefer "Marion's Theme" from Raiders over Superman and not to forget Newmans Wuthering Height !
"To everyone choosing Ilya's and Princess Leia's themes, I wanna ask you... is Yoda's theme a love theme? And is it because he's not a hottie?" -------------- I would say YES. Although without any romantic context, Yoda's Theme, to me, is written in that same warm, flowing style akin to Leia's Theme and Marion's Theme and shines the light on the inherent beauty and goodness within the character. It's a Love Theme for Yoda
Six years later I got my first VCR and this [Superman] was one of the first films I bought pre-recorded. I couldn't wait to hear that transition again- but then they lopped it off.... Long winded story's short version- Superman love theme. That's my choice too.
The strength of the theme, in my opinion, is most pronounced within the context of the "Superman" main theme (main title, end title, concert "march", take your pick). The love theme is both integral and integrated into the main theme. Remove it and you get what was heard in the end credits to "Superman III". Ugh!
And that "lopped" VHS of "Superman" ... which was my first VHS purchase ... brought back memories of a vain effort to tack on the end credits from the ABC broadcast (at a very slow speed since there was so little videotape left), but a substantial portion of the music was marred by David Hartman's voice-over plugging Good Morning America.
For me, a love theme would need to have a tinge of sadness and some pastoral sweep to have some sort of impact. The wedding cue from WYATT EARP would be another example.
Along similar lines, I would include a cue from James Horner's DEEP IMPACT score called "The Wedding" -- a deeply touching piece of scoring in combination with the visuals, but even by itself, it grabs me every time. As its name implies, this is truly a love theme in the deepest sense. (And I'm not even much of a Horner fan!) Here it is:
Bennett LADY CAROLINE LAMB Bernstein DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS and A WALK IN THE SPRING RAIN Herrmann THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR Rozsa MADAME BOVARY (Charles love for Emma) Toch/Friedhofer PETER IBBETSON (especially the statements for Peter's escape from prison and the finale) Waxman PRINCE VALIANT, PEYTON PLACE, BELOVED INFIDEL Williams JANE EYRE
But most compelling is Newman's transformation of the Fain/Webster song for LOVE IS A MANY-SPLENDORED THING; (then there's WUTHERING HEIGHTS, PRINCE OF FOXES, THE ROBE, THE EGYPTIAN, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK....)
I can honestly say that I am astounded and somewhat disappointed that the love them from SPARTACUS isn't mentioned before this post! I am thrown into so many memories and so much longing whenever I hear it.

Have you got half the thread on ignore then?
Moonlik: "SPARTACUS."
Dana willcox : "gotta say, Ben-Hur, El Cid and Spartacus top the charts for me."
Andy: "Spartacus is one some of the greatest, "
ScottMcOldsmith: "According to Robert Towson, apparently it's the Love Theme from Spartacus. If the CD filled with love theme variations is any indication...."
