They don't eliminate UA, it's just an appendage to the MGM logo, but they DO eliminate any indication of Transamerica.

A friend of mine was working for Fox Vid some time ago and was working to restore anne frank to roadshow length.
he uncovered a letter to fox where George stevens maintains that even the short version retain the Intermission.

Thanks for your attention to detail on this, Mike.

All these corporate machinations make me gag. To this day whenever I go to watch a UA movie and see the MGM lion come up at the beginning, I think "What BS!" Not a good reaction to start with when about to watch something.

Absolutely, which is why I had the conversation about the stipulation to have covers say Hollywood Studio Symphony starting in 1960. It felt absolutely wrong to say that for Diary of Anne Frank, and we didn't technically have to because it was 1959. Yet we did have a studio musicians roster for that year. See the dilemma? Given what the original LP said and my desire to keep the name of the studio alive on a Newman release with Nick's name on it, I opted for doing what we did, totally with the AFM's blessing.

That's what I was thinking you might be alluding to. I think "Anne Frank" is the last Fox soundrack that made any reference to a studio orchestra.

I have it in mind that Newman's orchestra was made up of all his "studio" players even though the studio orchestra was no longer a unit. I could be wrong.

MGM used "MGM Studio Orchestra" well into the 1960s, IIRC.

In the 1950s and up to mid 1960s I regularly saw the United Artists hexagon logo on films but that logo is hardly ever seen on the DVD or Blu-ray. I miss seeing it because it was such a regular part of UA films in those days. From what I can gather, the logo was often only used on British (or maybe international) prints but not North American prints although I've no idea why that would be.

I smell a blind buy here, if it's as good as The Robe and The Egyptian.

Is it?

Oh, I’d say it’s every bit as good as those two masterworks. This was the score that introduced me to Newman. It’s a lot more intimate than the epics (more like the pastoral moments of Greatest Story), but no less beautiful and perfectly conveys the youthfulness and hope of Anne. The album track The Dearness of You, Peter never fails to make me shed a tear it’s so beautiful.

You made the sale by bringing up The Greatest Story Ever Told.

It is not in any way an EPIC like both of those great scores, but it is A-level A. Newman, just like them. Trademark Newman gorgeous string writing in evidence aplenty.

Another Newman score in this mode is his sublime music for THE SONG OF BERNADETTE. Can't recommend that one highly enough.

Oscar nominations for 1959 included DIARY, BEN-HUR, THE NUN'S STORY, and ON THE BEACH, and could have included NORTH BY NORTHWEST (instead of PILLOW TALK). Can you imagine that standard today?

They should all have won! No, I can't imagine such a lineup today...

It's to laugh. I mean whoever brings up 1959? What an embarrassment of riches* in them days.

No, Howard, most of today's music nominees are "reaches."

Ordered. Just 84 cents under $40 from LLL with local California shipping ($6.10) and sales tax.

If you want to save money, order from Intrada whose shipping is a relatively reasonable $4.50 for local shipping instead of LLL's $6.10.

Somehow, I don't think this was supposed to be at the bottom of the page:

'The album master was a recently located 1/4" stereo tape. That should be mentioned somewhere in here.'
