Yes. Of course I watched it til the end.
I would have mentioned it if I'd bailed before the end.
It just wasn't any fun.
Kids films should be fun!
Not 100 minutes of Wasted Lives or Deep Regret, which this film seemed to wallow in to me.
It feels like ever since Pixar got all those kudos for the sad, tragic melancholy of that early sequence in UP, they've become somewhat obsessed with introducing middle aged hang ups to very young children.
I really do not get the wasted lives or regret, actually the film make a very deliberate point that these people DID NOT waste their lives, the lived them. Maybe you fell asleep for 20 minutes or something, that message was very clearly defined in the story, and the message was the precise opposite of what you took away from it.
As far as fun, I still found it fun. This made me think somewhat of Titan AE, very much a commercial bomb, very much downbeat, but I think it is very much fun, and has an interesting angle, getting on with life after a disaster. Disney showed us that animation can indeed have darkness, sadness and melancholy and still be fun also. If you look back to Dumbo or Pinocchio or Bambi, those are the some of the saddest films, still fun, entertaining, and some of the greatest films of all time.

That's how I view it when you like something dumb! I agree with you on this one. Massive miscalculation by Pixar. What a weird movie.

I'm glad that you liked it and enjoyed it, but aside from the animation and main theme, it did nothing for me.
I agree that those older Disney films you mentioned are classics.
And the original Toy Story films are too (well, the first 3).
But I very much doubt this one will ever be considered as such.
No, you are certainly free not to like it, of course.
The issue is that your take away message from it is just not there in the film.
The message, objectively stated in the last part of the film is precisely the opposite of your take away from the film.
Sleeping would have explained that. So, yeah, that is either sleeping, or an error.
No, I am certain it will not be a classic, but then again, a lot of pretty loved films are not classics.

I would never try to convince somebody that they shouldn't like something they like. There is always room for more pleasure in the world.
As I said, I did not like this film, almost at all. Yes, the animation is terrific (I would expect nothing less from Pixar), but at its center I could not find a character. It's not just that he's nothing like the other character with the same name, it's that there's nothing about this Buzz that I found compelling or funny. I understood what was supposed to be funny about the side characters, but none of them made me laugh. Obviously, this is a purely subjective reaction.
While KeV and I agree about this movie, I am slightly uncomfortable with his statement that kids movies should be "fun." That term is nebulous, of course. But as it happens, I loved WALL•E, which I remember a fellow parent complaining wasn't "fun." But I found WALL•E himself (itself?) charming, and I found the premise (while undoubtedly bleak in many ways) compelling. Inside Out reckoned with dark issues, and I bawled at the end, but I found it intriguing and hilarious.
For me, it's not that Lightyear wasn't funny (though to me, it wasn't). It's that it wasn't anything but top-notch animation.

yes, Wall E and Inside Out are good examples, UP is often pretty sad as well. I just think that there is a gross simplification of the animation audience as needing only candy coated, fake happy junk food, like Minions. I mean, the pure idiocy of Minions is fine, but animation has a much bigger canvas than 'brightly colored, fun and happy". Granted, most of the major studio product has hewed pretty close to that, except Disney, and Bluth Goldman projects, and stuff from overseas. Bluth Goldman have made some of the darkest, most depressing animated projects, but some great stuff.
