James, one minor comment about the review:

"Cosmo . . . Old Friend" is Horner's take on Arvo Part's "Fratres", not a Khachaturian reference.

It's a mash-up of Part, Glass (from Glassworks) and a bit of Khachaturian in there, too!

I know you love this score, so I'm not surprised that you would have a good response. I may need to listen to that cue again - maybe the memory of the Part stuff overwhelms the Khachaturian for me.

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West - http://www.movie-wave.net/an-american-tail-fievel-goes-west/

Nice fair review...

A little trivia. When Spielberg wanted to make his first animated film it was suggested he look towards Europe for animation talent. He reportedly said paraphrasing, "I'm not going to have a film called "An American Tail" made in Europe!"

Bluth originally had a three picture deal, or first rights of refusal on any sequels. Spielberg and Bluth never saw eye to eye, and they decided to part ways after "The Land Before Time".

Thus Spielberg had to look elsewhere for "Fievel Goes West". He ended up assembling an animation unite in Europe to do the sequel!

I know Horner's version of that piece so well that I forget what the original sounds like now. Maybe the bit from Patriot Games in "Electronic Battlefield" isn't from the Khachaturian, but that bit from Patriot Games definitely inspired the "I might be able to crash the whole damn system" section.

God I love this fucking movie and score and everything. Except the poster. Not an eye-catching poster! Come on, marketing!

The influences on Horner's score cannot be denied, but he references these pieces in a way that doesn't come off as stale or a pale imitation in the way that many temp track scores usually turn out. He really knocks it out of the park in every cue (no matter who worked on a lot of the unreleased Playtronics stuff, though I'd like to know who did those!).

Didn't he also toss some of Vaughan-Williams' Tommy Tal-Tals up in that bad boy, or am I thinking of something else?

I also appreciate that he gives stars for his reviews, so I don't spend a review reading about what will turn out to be a two-star score. I stopped reading another review site years ago when I dumped ratings.

It's also a fun way, if you want a laugh, to get a laugh by reading some of his "NO STARS" reviews; scores so bad that couldn't even muster one star.

Bicentennial Man is by and far my favorite Horner score. It just oozes emotion and memorable melodies from every corner as it bounces from interesting idea (not unlike how a Vaughn Williams symphony in this case). Deep Impact was Horner's cylinders mistiming and shuddering; Bicentennial Man is the same engine after a tune up, oil change, and new spark plugs. There is not a wasted moment in this score. The reuses don't bother me one bit since most of the ideas are better executed than where they originated from (save maybe Braveheart). Love this and a high 5 star score for me.

Great to have you back in the Horner zone James. I have read every one and will now read this review whilst listening to the music on a dreary English Sunday afternoon.

YES!!! So excited to see these reviews! Thank you for going back to your Horner review odyssey. These are some of the most enjoyable posts for me. I have enjoyed going on this odyssey with you since you first began it years ago. Thank you.
