The entire CD will be devoted to Lavagnino´s collaboration with Orson Welles.

I expect Yavar Moradi will be interested in this album!

Hell yes I am! Very exciting. I'd be even more excited if it wasn't just excerpts from Falstaff (though it is fantastic there will be some previously unreleased music from it included), but just a complete & chronological remastered presentation of the score -- I personally would've had no problem paying extra for a whole extra disc for that to happen.

But I'm definitely in for this in any case; would've gone for it even without any bonuses included from Falstaff or Othello.

Yavar

Will Alhambra be climbing aboard the vinyl craze? Perhaps the upcoming Lavagnino title(s) during the 2nd half of 2017 will be on LP. smile

No, Alhambra will certainly not climb aboard the current Italian vinyl craze. It makes no sense at all with those old symphonic Lavagnino scores from the early 60s.
I have already written about this in another thread just a few weeks ago:
Besides Morricone only the few all-time popular Italian film genres (giallo, western, horror etc.) and certain musical styles still fashionable nowadays (pop, jazz, lounge music, funk, psychedelic music etc.) really profit from this vinyl trend because there is also a younger generation - people who for the most part can certainly not be found on this board - who is interested in collecting all kinds of items which have to do with certain cult genres and films. Retro pop art is the decisive matter here.
Therefore it is also clear for example that Digitmovies at the moment won´t release their current Giombini peplum CD on LP, but of course only their Cipriani POLIZOTTO title. Only the Cipriani title will sell on LP, but not the other one. These are the rules you have to keep in mind.

Hi, Stefan.

Your above input explains why, with current trends as they are, Alhambra does not plan to produce corresponding LP versions of the vintage Lavagnino music albums you've been creating.

Nonetheless, the new release announcement from Digitmovies indicates 2 albums of orchestral music (L'armata Brancaleone and Brancaleone alle cruciate) by Carlo Rustichelli which - curiously - are also getting issued onto vinyl records.
Are these items considered "cult"? I wouldn't think instrumental marches are 'cool' enough to appeal to the demographic you describe above...

... and to keep this thread on topic: are there any further Lavagnino albums in the Alhambra pipeline you can hint about?

The BRANCALEONE scores are owned by GDM who have recently been pushing the vinyl trend on all fronts anyway.
But the two movies are absolutely "cult" in Italy and also the main theme of the scores was and still is a famous hit/pop tune there which everybody on the street knows. Of course, it has never been so popular in foreign countries, but in Italy it was/is. So the consideration certainly was: Why not try vinyl releases of these two scores? I am not sure if it will be a good seller, but at least within Italy it could indeed work very well!

Clue for the next Lavagnino CD on Alhambra: It will be a score from 1962. smile
But I am not sure if we will manage to release it still this year. Rather early 2018.

Let the guessing commence:

  • Ulysses Against Hercules
  • Marco Polo (the non-U.S.A. version)
  • Damon and Pythias
  • The Last Charge (Fra Diavolo)
  • Commando
  • War Gods of Babylon (with Carlo Savina)?
  • Carmen di Trastevere
  • Hypnosis (with Roman Vlad)?
  • Il vecchio testamento
  • Dal sabato al lunedì

    Hi Stefan

Is there any possibility of a release for MORTE DI UN BANDITO on Alhambra or another label? The main theme is superb.

    Thanks Dave

Damon and Pythias, Commando, War Gods of Babylon, and Hypnosis I don't recognize at all as being scored by Lavagnino but maybe I am just not familiar with English titles.

You forgot Marcia o crepa and Il tiranno di Siracusa

    Hi Dave,

yes, MORTE DI UN BANDITO has indeed a lovely main theme, but it is a rather short score from 1961 with a duration of only about 20 minutes. So for CD purposes it would have to be coupled with a second title. Nevertheless, in the CAM catalogue list by Sugar one can see that someone must have reserved this title, but I don´t know for which label. Maybe they then noticed it too late that this was only a very short score? So at the moment it is a bit of a puzzle who will really release this music or not.

Funnily, IL TIRANNO DI SIRACUSA is nothing else than the Italian release title of DAMON AND PYTHIAS. smile

War Gods of Babylon (with Carlo Savina)?

Lavagnino had nothing to do with WAR GODS OF BABYLON (= I SETTE FOLGORI DI ASSUR). Mario Nascimbene had at first been slated for this picture, but it was then scored ONLY by Carlo Savina. Tapes do also exist in the Savina estate. Maybe the score will be released by Digitmovies in the near future. Why not?

    Hypnosis (with Roman Vlad)?

HYPNOSIS is only by Roman Vlad who also got the credit in the film´s Main Title. Regarding the style it is typical Roman Vlad music which can be recognized at once when listening to it. When I asked him in my interview with him in 2007, Vlad couldn´t exactly remember anymore what had happened in 1962 with this film, but it seems that Lavagnino had at first been asked to do it and then handed it over to Vlad as he simply had no time.

Love all the peplum scores! Keep ‘em coming!

    Thank you, Stefan!

That even any of these have been released would have been a miracle back in the day!

Let me start guessing again and narrow Lavagnino's 1962 titles down to either Marco Polo or Marcia o crepa (aka Commando).

Please, is there any chance this year you will release THE SAVAGE INNOCENTS (1960)? This Lavagnino work is another masterpiece, wonderful, amazing! (I extracted from my DVD copy the excerpts/melodies that were possible without dialogue -- I got 20 minutes --, and it's one of the most melodious works I've ever heard from Lavagnino!)

As I have already explained it very often on this board during the last few years, tapes for THE SAVAGE INNOCENTS are quite simply not available in the Lavagnino estate. Otherwise we would have released this superb score a long time ago on Alhambra as it is one of those in which I myself have always been particularly interested and for which I had also hoped to find the tapes among those in the estate. So I can only repeat it once again: Nothing of this score exists anymore and so unfortunately no CD can be released.

Oh, sorry, it is not always that I enter this forum, anyway, thank you so much for answering my question quickly!

As for this work ... oh what a pity, this will be a holy grail that will not be found then ... well, so I will continue to take care of the 20 minutes extracted from my old DVD ....

The 7" single of Marcia o Crepa contains a theme co-written with Nino Rosso. It is a march heavy on trumpet, not the typical style of previous Alhambra releases. The movie is rare and I've never seen it though. Among the three peplums from 1962, I don't remember which ones are CAM, and therefore which ones can be excluded. Marco Polo also sounds like a good guess.

Speaking of Savage Innocents, did master tapes for Hot Enough for June (1964) suffer from the same fate? It is easily available on DVD and the score was conducted by Muir Mathieson.

No tapes for HOT ENOUGH FOR JUNE or MARCO POLO exist. So they can´t be released on CD.

Interesting, for the new release we are back at:

1962 Ulisse contro Ercole / [DVD: yes] Peplum
1962 Il vecchio testamento / [DVD: yes] Adventure/Peplum
1962 Il tiranno di Siracusa / [DVD: yes] Peplum
1962 Dal sabato al lunedì / Comedy, Cam 7"
1962 La leggenda di Fra Diavolo / Adventure
1962 Marcia o crepa / War, 7" single by Nino Rosso
1962 Carmen di Trastevere / Comedy
January 1963 Caterina di Russia / [DVD: yes] Drama

I have not watched any of those.
