My thanks too, Mike, for this release and all the others you have done over the years. Some people just have to
complain. Unfortunate.

Again, my sincere appreciation!

For some reason, I never picked up the OST, so this being a definitive presentation, with great artwork, notes etc. makes it a must purchase for me.

I trust Mike Matessino's judgement on this as he's never steered us wrong.

Hi Mr. Matessino,

I will absolutely support this release, and am very much looking forward to it! My earlier comment where I said I felt it could use a better master, to clarify, is related solely to the Hymn to the Fallen track. I play my CDs on a pretty good sounding Yamaha stereo (although it it old now!), and for that track, the choir gets pretty "hot" and there's noticeable static/distortion from the speakers during a couple of moments. Just for that track alone, I have to change the settings on the equalizer to a lower setting in order to avoid that static (in fact I just play the entire CD on that lower setting for simplicity's sake). Not a big deal for me, otherwise the recording is great, and if the new CD has the same issue for me on my stereo, so be it, I will just have to continue doing what I've always done for this score. Some CDs I need to drop the equalization for, others I don't, and this has just always been one where I've had to drop it.

As I've said I'm not a big fan of this score, and have rarely listened to it. However, I can absolutely back up what JohnnyRoastbeef said about Hymn to the Fallen having distortion in the louder passages (particularly with the choir). It stood out to me back when I first checked the score out at a library back in the 90s. Here's hoping (for fans of the score who are getting this) that Mike was able to address that issue to some degree at least.

And just to reiterate again: though I am not excited for this release myself, I absolutely support its right to exist and wish LLL success as always.

We heard no distortion on the digital master in the studio; it's possible that it occurred in the pressings at the time. There is definitely a different quality to the recording on this score because it was done at Symphony Hall in Boston.

That's how to do it, Yavar. Shamelessly butter 'em up with the right to exist stuff, get 'em in for a podcast interview, then hit 'em with the real tough questions about Total Recall.

Haha. We actually don't plan to discuss masterings and such on The Goldsmith Odyssey much. I mean, obviously if we have someone like Mike on as a guest it would make sense to go there and get their insight. I'm usually not a person who hears mastering defects and such, but the distortion in this case was very memorable. (Jens, who is much more sensitive, LOVES the Quartet Total Recall as far as I know.) Glad to hear Mike didn't hear it on the masters so maybe it was a manufacturing thing.

No noticeable distortion from my pressing on either my DragonFly/Emotiva Airmotiv 4S computer system (FLAC/Foobar) or my Musical Fidelity/Thiel 3.6 main system (Music Hall cd25.2/OPPO UDP-205 CD Player). Just goosebumps on that track. smile

There was some very, very minor noise at some points between (about) the 3:30 and 4:30 minute mark but sounds more like instrument noise, perhaps from the brass or recording venue but didn’t sound like distortion. There is quite a bit of dynamic range to be found on this cd - which is a very GOOD thing. Still excited to open my wallet for this one.

Interesting to see so many different reactions to this score. Personally I like it a lot, it tells a story brilliantly, as so many other Williams scores. I put it in my CD player this night, it was a long time ago. Brings back some memories. I also listened to this in bed like another poster said! I did see the film once, at its release. I don’t feel the need to see it again, kind of a “once is enough” experience for me I guess. The music stands on its own and evokes solemnity and dignity and has a soothing effect on me. The trumpet and horn solos are beautiful. You have to be in the mood for it and I can understand some people not liking it. I’m perfectly content with the first version of this score but appreciate the work that has been done to update it a bit.

Love this score, can't wait. I think it's the second to last track on the original album. The track name escapes me now, but it's one of my favorite cues, so poignant and moving. Way to go LLL.

Put me down for a copy, I didn't own the original for whatever reason but seen the movie once maybe twice, for me its not really an action packed movie but the story is cool & the few scenes like the beach, bunkers, sniper Etc were magnificent, Williams unique compositional smile skills is more than enough for me to purchase.

I can't wait for this one! BTW, my actual name is Ryan, and everyone called Private Ryan when this film came out. But it is my first name, not last.

LLLCD 1460
Music by John Williams
Limited Edition of 4000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $19.98

STARTS SHIPPING SEPT 4

La-La Land Records, Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks Pictures, Universal Music Special Markets and Amblin Entertainment proudly present the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition CD reissue of John Williams’ Academy Award Nominated original score to the 1998 feature film SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, directed by Steven Spielberg (who received an Oscar for helming) and starring Tom Hanks, Edward Burns and Matt Damon. One of the renowned composer’s finest works, Mr. Williams’ powerful orchestral score is a deeply affecting memorial to all who gave the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day. The composer’s masterwork finds perfect pitch throughout this landmark film, whether underscoring the horrors of war or the emotional and unbreakable bonds of brotherhood forged within its fury.

Reissue Producer Mike Matessino sourced this release from the original album master (and provided slight cleanup). Approved by both the composer and the director, the presentation features two “film version” tracks containing material that was not included on the original album (These revised cues derive from Shawn Murphy’s original digital mix files). This special release features exclusive, all-new liner notes by Matessino and brand new art design by Jim Titus.

Me, Ware and the Swashbuckler got into an amazing discussion when this film came out and I can't bring myself to respond to the many things said here that were addressed then. Suffice it to state that Hymn, for one matter and for me, represents one of the most profound moments in the theatre sitting there alone (I think) as the audience had filed out. It was not underscore but it was underscore. It was not exit music it was stay in your seat music and leave only when you're ready. Powerful closing to experience arguably equal to most memorable film endings.

It proved no less powerful when the CD came out.

Ditto, Howard. I was surprised to read that some people didn't care for this film or music, but it is different strokes. I found the movie a profoundly moving experience. I was glued to my seat at the end of the movie.
