What was wrong with the Superman Blu box ? To my ears it sound good and as anoted " For this definitive presentation, the entire recording has been painstakingly remixed and remastered from that first-generation source, yielding the best sound quality ever" , So what is better than the best sound quality ever ?

Allowing for hyperbole, also realize that the word "ever" should probably have been "yet."

There is nothing wrong with the Superman Blu Box, it sounds excellent. However, this LaLaLand release is the first time a commercially available mastering has been made from the actual session tapes, so I have no doubt that sonically it is state of the art. This is not just a new mastering, but a new mastering from new sources. I am quite pleased with the blue box and let this one sell for now; (this is the year I am cutting down on my CD buys, but I particularly think twice on re-buying things I already own), but I would probably purchase for the high-res download, should that ever be commercially available.

Anyway, this is a spectacular release of one of John Williams' finest scores of all time (perhaps my personal favorite); I was sure LaLaLand would release this, but I did not expect the release to be as sensational as it turned out to be. Kudos.

After all these years.....every single time I hear "Krypton and The Dome opens" I get goosebumps all over my body.
I instantly return to be that kid they saw, wide-eyed and mouth agape, the movie in the theatre in 1978.
This masterful score is the distillation of what "sense of wonder" means.

Yes, it is a SUPERscore!

@stephen woolston
why are you willing to pay fees and "ransoms", ending up to $100 (probably more), when Music Box has it on pre-order for 44,95 EUR, european shipping instead of transatlantic, and no custom fees (at least, not until your country's happy departure from the EU march 29th) ?

Okay, since Superman, Superman II and III have been improved in quality since the Blue Box, what about IV? Should I double dip for the entire Reeve soundtrack collection...? Or is the Blue Box version identical to the new?

Ordered.

I'm curious how many people don't own this either because The Box was too expensive or because it's been so long since a standalone release was issued.

Superman IV already came from first-gen 2" 24-track masters in 2008. Should be exactly the same presentation as the Blue Box

Very mixing feelings about Sups. From one hand, I'm glad, that after Blue Box was finally sold out, the score still be in-print. From the other hand....

Does it mean that in 2028 we will get 50th Anniversary edition, which will sounds even better, with another 1-2 tracks, which no-one heard for 50 years? wink

And in serious mode - I understand that this new edition is remastered, improved etc., etc. and etc.
But if I already own Blue Box, do I really need to upgrade it? Please, don't say - just listen samples & compare.
I don't have expensive hi-fi equipment, so if I couldn't hear difference on my current equipment, I'll wait with this one. Let's face it - $35 (+ another $35 for bonus tracks, which were released on Superman 2-3 set), plus huge international shipping costs just for some short new tracks and better sound (with no guarantee that I'll hear the difference!) - is too much for me.

It will be very helpful, if Mike can comment about improvements etc.

I feel the frustration when it comes to international shipping. It's gotten ridiculous. On this side of the equation, all we can do is get the projects done and make sure that a masterpiece like this is preserved, made available, and presented as best as we can.

I'll leave it others to comment on the quality of the sound on inexpensive equipment or otherwise, but honestly there is nowhere to go from here for the 50th or at any later time other than a high resolution release. There's no infrastructure in place for that at the moment because it involves two unrelated corporate entities, hence the flourishing of third party labels. At this moment in time, licenses are granted to those third party labels for physical compact disc product. And further note that with this studio it is the label who pays for the shipping in of the boxes and all the transfers as well as the mastering work, etc.

Like buying a new car, sometimes you have to just accept that the money isn't there right now. Maybe it will be in the future, and at least with this score it's popular enough to expect that it will always in print. With the good fortune of it being a UK recording, it's something that La-La Land (especially knowing MV's feelings about it) will want to keep in their catalog as long as possible.

On the other hand, life is short and if you are passionate about something, that can sometimes take precedence over financial factors, especially when you want to be supportive of those who work to make available those things you are passionate about. There is no shame in a decision either way, but no one can really make it for you.

Mike M.

Oh by the way Mike...Thanks you for your great effort. This newly found original tapes are excellent..Great Job for one of my favorite scores of John Williams. You are costing major funds! and is it this year that Johnny T’s The River is being released or maybe that beautiful cue from The Reivers ..The Horse Race will be released...Mike, I appreciate your hard work...but let’s get out The River! Lol.

Improved? Did the 50 piece London High School Band become a 100 Members of the LSO?

You mean that improved? Oh the pain.

Er.... Superman II, III and IV are all the same master as the Blue Box, Superman I is the one with a new master from newly found session master tapes.

You're right, I just reread that Mike M was talking about the source music being upgraed which was put on the new II/III set.

Thanks for saving me money. smile

My admiration to everyone involved in producing the Superman reissues. I have two copies of the Blue Box -- one for home and the other for the office -- and have just ordered the newest sets for Supermans I, II, II.

I can only imagine that it takes a lot of time and effort to produce these sets. Many thanks to everyone involved.

That's true dedication. I'm wondering if there are more soundtracks people have actually doubled up on to have various copies at different locations?

Yeah basically Disc 2 of the Superman II/III set is an upgraded version of Disc 8 of the Blue Box

Yes, those were remixed too. But technically they were not "pop renditions"... those were actually alternates of the cue for the movie, one intended for a singer and one designated as a "non-vocal" version. Neither of these was ever supposed to have the spoken vocal track over it; only the third version that they ultimately used was intended for that.

Oh right Alternate versions. Good to know they’re remixed as well. Now I must get the II/III set as well. Thanks Mike!

I will chime in to say that I agree with those who note a huge improvement in the sound of Superman 1 samples. I wasn't particularly excited about the prospect of a new version of the score but after listening to the samples I couldn't resist. The difference in clarity is quite impressive.
