I'm SUPER excited for this, it looks stunning. I cannot wait to order it! I just have one tiny question:

Will the two recordings of "The Morning After" performed by Renee Armand be the same as the two on the old LLL CD? Because neither of them are actually the film version.

On the two LLL recordings, Armand sings very crisply, almost with a British accent, so the word "after" sounds like "uftuh" and the word "chance" sounds like "chunce".

On the film recording, Armand's vocal performance is totally different. She is clearly trying to sound more like Carol Lynley. Armand's singing is more breathy and nasal/American, pronouncing the words "chANNce" and "aaafter". This recording matches both the rehearsal scene and the later dinner scene, so it sounds like that one recording was used in both scenes.

Someone posted the full film recording online back in 2005. I have no idea where they sourced it from.

I just wonder if it was available to LLL for this release. If so, that would be amazing!

This video describes how Armand studied Lynley's voice, which Al Kasha describes as "whispery," in order to sound like her:

This is all great..and I loved what Al Kasha and Joel Hirschorn did, BUT...Behind the scenes, Lionel Newman of 20th Century Fox was whispering in Irwin Allen’s Ears and saying..What about Johnny T writing the Songs?!?! Newman Lobbied very hard, on The Towering Inferno for Johnny T, to write the music for the Song.

Unfortunately, the two we have are all that are on the music elements. It is possible that Armand came back at the very end of postproduction to replace the vocal a second time and that those recordings then ended up somewhere else. At least Renee is represented and credited, which she wasn't at the time. We also dedicated the release to Carol Lynley.

Thanks for the reply, I messaged you on Facebook too. smile

It's great to see Armand credited and wonderful to hear about the dedication to Carol Lynley. I met her at an anniversary screening of the film a few years back, and she was very sweet.

Like Thor, I only have the original FSM releases of THE TOWERING INFERNO and THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. I only have the LP release of EARTHQUAKE. As regards INFERNO and POSEIDON, I do notice the sound deficiencies, but in these cases not enough to upgrade, and that's simply because I don't adore those scores enough to make it worth my while. Apart from the Main Titles and a couple of highlights they don't work as a sustained listen for me. Funny how such "epic" disaster movies got such claustrophobic, "interior" scoring... although when you think about it, it's entirely appropriate for the films.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What twat wrote the above? Whoever it was, I actually used to feel the same until this very morning. I used to think that THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE wasn't a very interesting score, and that the sound on the FSM was quite good. Well, this morning the sound was very noticeably poor, and the score much more "interesting" than I'd remembered. It made me want to hear it in good sound.

Then I heard all of THE TOWERING INFERNO. Even from the old days, going back to when I got it on LP when I was 13 years old, I was vaguely disappointed that it wasn't all thrilling stuff like the Main and End Titles. I was even disappointed with the 9-min "Planting the Charges". I bought the FSM when it first came out anyway, because I bought all the FSM releases at the beginning. Still felt that it was a bit of a ramble. Then this morning I heard it all, and was completely transfixed. It was great. And I thought the sound was okay enough, even the damaged tracks. I'd have programmed them into the main prog. In fact I did.

Then I thought that EARTHQUAKE is the one I'm missing most. On LP, thousands of miles away. I always loved that. Would love to have it here on CD, with the film versions. And now I can.

Then I remembered that POSEIDON really ignited my love for scores. I refused to leave the cinema during the End Credits, much to the disbelief of my parents. A few years later the family took me to see EARTHQUAKE, and it was the best film I'd ever seen. I've seen it since, and it has somewhat shrunk in its brilliance, but at the the cinema it was magnificent. And again I made my parents suffer by having to read credits and listen to music "when the film had finished". Mere months later and it was the same story for THE TOWERING INFERNO. I even told my parents that it was obviously the same composer because it was "the same tune" as EARTHQUAKE. And those INFERNO End Tiltes were so good that even my parents admitted that the music was "quite good", while at the same time cursing themselves for having spawned a freak of nature.

I wish this set hadn't become available, just so as I could stop thinking about it. It's going on the Christmas list with the other box sets I'm interested in. Santa's going to be so bloody livid at the freak of nature he spawned that he'll probably get me socks, the vindictive old git.

I have EARTHQUAKE only on LP. One of the tracks contains an attempt to duplicate Sensurround. I wonder if the CD in this set will have the same gimmick.

I already own both previous Poseidons and Towering Inferno, but not Earthquake. This gives me an excuse to triple dip on this beautiful collection.

I shall purchase it.

Yavar, I and I'm sure many others here appreciate your efforts to inform; particularly the insider tidbits you provide. I don't know you personally, but I consider you as an FSM friend. Your input is often helpful to me in buying decisions, so thanks for what you do!
I noticed that the criticisms leveled at you were never backed up with proof that you claimed to "know everything" and "do it all the time", etc., - none of which I've ever seen you do - but is pretty typical for that type of sniping.
Plus, I didn't know we had judges on here whom are authorized to determine that "you spend to (sic) much time on here" and also keep count of how often you use refresh...sounds a little stalkerish to me. wink
Fun is fun, and probably all of us pick at one another from time to time in jest; but stuff like this seems mean-spirited and rude and is like some of the crap one sees on Twitter - with accusations, but no "proof".
Enough of that, anyway, I'm pretty excited about this release, especially for the film version of Earthquake.

The score to The Poseidon Adventure is one of John Williams' most stately and suspenseful creations; a score which should be continually in print for lovers of fine film music and especially aspiring film composers who, I feel, should be guided by its economy and fine dramatics.

But the past albums do sound alarmingly crude. Ironic, considering that it must have been recorded under Lionel Newman's auspices.

Considering the veritable miracles being wrought on mid-20th-century analogue classical albums, especially the titles that are newly mastered for hi-res download, it would be nice to hear from Mr. Matessino on the condition of those tapes and how much (or how little) digital touch-up has been employed for this new release.

These, and almost scoring "Meteor", Johnny almost had a career out of scoring disasters.

Last time I ordered a boxset from them (Mission: Impossible) it arrived safely in a cardboard box.

I am so glad the restored 1974 Album Version is Back!

What They all did was a Film Version Of Music, then turn around and make a concert version longer cues, with the music..hence Lisalette and Harlee album version is longer and very nice.

The album Concert version of Main Title is Different Fuller sound than the Film Version..and when Irwin Allen’s name comes at the Ship Scene ..Produce By..There is a cymbal crash the Concert Version does not have.

And to those special haters that hate...without one note heard...you all hated. Fail!

The Samples sound damn good.
