I think I would like this more if the suite were separated from the symphony. The suite would make a good side 2 for Edmond de LucMa's "Safari."

The suite has several annoying passages.

I am sticking with the symphony.

Now mixing my second maitai, paired with "South Seas Adventure."

Some nice Baxter-esque touches.

When I used to compile exotica collections, I would often include "Head Divers."

Side 2 of this is pretty bad.

I just thought of another great Alex North track--the "Main Titles" march from THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE (on Intrada). It begins with a really rousing military-style march, but then goes into this amazing section where, well, things kind of go off the rails and for a minute or so, as Douglas Fake's notes say, the different brass instruments "dart, weave, jab, and peck for several bars amongst themselves" with incredible precision and timing before going back to the march.

If you watch the movie, you'll find this section of the music was removed. But that's Alex North--he can't just give you a simple march!

"t looks like there are only 2 North tracks on side 2: "Smuggling Guns" and "Apache Death." The former is terrible. The latter has some nice percussive elements. Anyone know what film these are from?"

THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY, a western with Robert Mitchum, if memory serves. The complete score was finally released a few years ago.

Thank you, Preston!

Are you going to wind up in the same place as you began? It seems like you're one step forward, two steps back with this Alex North guy.

I spent some time with Spartacus and Cleopatra - the scores, not the people - and want to give both some more listens before posting.

I sense so far that North's music in general requires more active listening for me to enjoy it, as compared to some of my other faves.

I also sense that my favorites of his may be in a sultry/southern/Tennessee Williams bag, but I have only two of these.

But I have not given up, not yet at least.

There was actually a film once called "The Nun's Story." Can you think of a title that would make you want to see a film any less than that?

Plenty. "What Women Want". "Anna of Brooklyn". "Scarecrow". "Fight Club".

"The Nun's Story" is actually a wonderful film, and I can see nothing about the title that would dissuade me from viewing it.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean there Onya, but I find it a little surprising coming from you. So North's music "requires more active listening" for you to enjoy it? I may be misunderstanding the sentence, but do you mean "active listening" as compared to "passive listening"? I won't go into this further in case I'm on the wrong trail, but that's actually why I love (a lot of) Alex North's music. It DEMANDS that you pay attention. In fact I would say in general that all "interesting" music demands that level of concentration. It doesn't easily sweep you away as background muzak in the Hawaiian restaurant, wonderful though that may be.

I haven't sat down and actively, exclusively listened to music probably since my high school days, when I would lie in bed with headphones, enjoying Miles, Bill Evans, Art Tatum, the Kinks, etc. I am always doing something while listening to music - driving, writing/editing, reading, cleaning, enjoying cocktails with Ms. Birri, brushing the cats, cooking dinner.

I can't really do ANYTHING else when I'm listening to music. I can have music "on", but if I'm boiling the cat or shaking up some banana cocktails then I'm not "listening" per se. It just becomes part of my wallpaper, suite decor or wardrobe. Not the way Alex North deserves to be listened to. Well, I could try it as an experiment, but I think it would fail for me.

Based on your definition, I haven't listened to music in over 30 years. Ridiculous that I accumulated a roomful of LPs and CDs, isn't it?

And I would never put banana in a cocktail. Give me a little credit, at least.

Yeah, what a waste of a banana. And, in your case, what a waste of hundreds of thousands of LPs, all crushed underfoot as Steve McQueen used to do. And I bet you haven't worn all those cravats in your collection either. I mean, not REALLY worn them.

I appreciate the Steve McQueen comparison!

What strange turns the Alex North Odyssey has taken.

I can't talk about music without talking about cocktails.
