Thierry, I don't doubt your sincerity and passion on this matter (how could I?), but aren't you basically saying "For anybody new to this score, tough luck – you have to have it in the less-than-ideal sound I've been living with!"? Imagine if all your CDs get obsolete every 7 (or less) years...? How many times do we «need» to rebuy the same thing to get one's collection updated. But in general, they don't, do they? This nightmare scenario you're positing is extrapolating from a very rare event. You are of course free to express your thoughts. As you have. I am also a historical customer of Intrada since 1985, just like you, and yet I admire what they're doing. To me, they're going the extra mile. I guess we just see it differently. That's how I see it. Also, if whatever CD you have is fine, there is no need to rebuy it, and if you have a problem with the sound and expect it to be solved, you can re-buy it. I have every single release of PAPILLON, for example, and each one was a step up from the one before. I was thrilled to get the last one from Quartet Records, as it is so much better than all the previous editions, it manages to address all the flaws the previous editions had. Now I'm set. I don’t think I'll ever te-buy it again, but will be happy to see it re-released for anyone who doesn't have it.

People do this all the time, release something, tinker with it, re-release it... heck, even Spielberg re-released an altered version of E.T. and then later re-released the previous version of E.T.

The way I see it: I have a great sounding THE LAST STARFIGHTER CD. And if there is an even greater sounding THE LAST STARFIGHTER CD coming up, that does not change my status quo in any way. The only thing that changes is that I have the option (not the obligation) to re-buy it. In case of PAPILLON, I was very happy to have that option, as the previous releases just had severe sonic problems, the Quartet release rectified them. In case of THE LAST STARFIGHTER, I feel like I'm set. (And I'm still not quite sure how a CD mastered from the original elements should sound less good than a CD that was mastered from a mix-down, though I certainly understand how it can sound differently, depending on how you mix it.)

As an addendum: let me recommend the original cast recording of the musical version of THE LAST STARFIGHTER (2004). As unlikely as it seems, it really captures the zany marvel of the film. Great music by Walter “Skip” Kennon and lyrics by Fred Landau. Readily available on Amazon. (These two also collaborated on a beautiful musical version of Jack Finney’s TIME AND AGAIN, which I was lucky to see at the Old Globe Playhouse in San Diego in 1996, but never commercially available, more’s the pity.)

Remastered reissue of complete score by Craig Safan for landmark 1984 sci-fi tale with Lance Guest, Dan O'Herlihy, Robert Preston, Catherine Mary Stewart, directed by Nick Castle. World of Rylos, battles with evil Xur, his armies of Ko-Dan, heroic efforts of "the last starfighter" to conquer the enemy - all were fodder for pioneer computer-generated imagery back in 1984. Surprise hit movie finds young Alex Rogan proving himself adept at video games in small town trailer park. Soon, mysterious visitor appears, whisks Alex to planet Rylos to fight conquering menace. Romance, an android "beta unit", vicious "hit beasts" and more add dimension to rewarding tale. Craig Safan launches in brilliant major key fashion with dynamic fortissimo rhythmic motif for trombones, then adds trumpet fanfares, finally allows heroic main theme to take command. Both ideas play important roles throughout score. Propulsive action cues dominate with emphasis on aggressive low brass rhythms, sweeping lines for upper strings, zig zag material for woodwinds, synths. Brass parts throughout are commanding! Unusually crisp, punchy recording courtesy engineer Lyle Burbridge, acoustics of MGM Studios Scoring Stage 1 (known currently as Sony Pictures Scoring) and sizzling performance by 100 top L.A. session players. Highlights abound but spotlights go to showstopping "Centauri Into Space", rousing "Death Blossom, Ultimate Weapon", powerful "Centauri Dies", exciting "Target Practice". Special mention is due "Record Breaker": Here, Safan ingeniously melds low-brow synth sound of video game seamlessly into powerful orchestral variants of his propulsive opening material as piece progresses. Clever! March 1984 sessions were recorded onto 2" 24-track tape, then mixed down to both 1/2" three-channel, 1/4" two-channel stereo tape and preserved in pristine condition. All-new 2022 reissue produced from original Lyle Burbridge stereo mixes for the best, crispest audio to date. Entire score presented in picture sequence, courtesy both Warner Bros. & Universal. Craig Safan conducts. Intrada MAF series CD release is a must for all sci-fi, fantasy and eighties orchestral action score enthusiasts!

...I have a great sounding THE LAST STARFIGHTER CD. And if there is an even greater sounding THE LAST STARFIGHTER CD coming up... I have the option (not the obligation) to re-buy it... Exactly. Buy something if it makes you happy to buy it! Or don't, and save your money for the next thing that will make you happy to buy it. And how much more customer friendly could the Intrada guys be than saying, twice in about a month now, I think, here is exactly what is and isn't different about this re-release? Good grief, with Sand Pebbles, they all but said, "No, really... DON'T buy this again. It's not that different!" Absolutely nobody has to buy it. The tracks can be re-sequenced however I want them. It is not keeping a release I would prefer to have from coming out. There is just nothing at all ugly about this. It's a bucket of wins.
