It's a very nice expansion. I just listened to the entire album. There isn't anything on the new album that is "essential", and the original soundtrack album was one of those abbreviated Goldsmith albums that played well, but the new album is simply "more" of the same, and it has a great musical flow. (Yeah, except for the two source cues, which don't fit in well "as music" within the score... but one can easily program them out.) This album is "more" of a good thing.

I never bought the original but wow this is really a terrific score. You can hear how it influenced other composers after as well. I hear some Gump and even HTTyD (mostly the harmonies)

For no reason besides inertia, I hadn't listened to this score for quite a while until this new version came out. I remembered liking it, but otherwise my recollections were vague.
As I listened to this new version, I spent quite a while wondering why my memories of it were so fond. The main theme was pretty, but boy, it just kept coming on over and over again. It had the effect to me of feeling a bit saccharine, which I didn't recall feeling in the past. I knew there was some new music, because I could compare playlists, but it sort of felt like my chicken dinner came with a side of more chicken.
And then, nearly a half-hour into the album, the cue "Tryouts" came on and the whole album perked up. Suddenly, there was energetic writing, and new melodic ideas, and I got excited about this score all over again! From there to the finish, it's really gangbusters.
I say this because – through absolutely no fault of anybody connected with this score or its presentation, living or dead – I feel like this is one where the expansion, and film order, is hurting more than helping. I know, the people have spoken, and this is how these albums are done now. I'm absolutely not complaining! Often, film order helps clarify a musical narrative. But in the case of this particular score, it bunches too many like cues together. There's variation, sure, but to me, not enough for a half-hour of listening. I haven't seen the film in a while, but I'm guessing most of these similar cues are separated by many minutes of scoreless scenes. Of course, no album should emulate that, but it shows why just putting a score in film order does not always adequately replicate the film experience.
Again, I have nothing but respect for the people who put this together! As an album, though, I feel like the old presentation (which had most of this music, anyway) was a better experience.
