Anyone feel safe to wash that red shirt with the rest of the laundry?

Or wear it while visiting a strange planet?

I am very late for the show. I found out this morning that Rudy was finally getting a deluxe edition. Of all the times I take a step back from announcements, my favorite Goldsmith gets a deluxe release. I still ordered of course.

The original 37 minute long soundtrack release of Rudy gets boosted with another 13 minutes of Goldsmith's music in this new release!

Says Clark,

"Our latest Soundtrack Spotlight may be smaller than most, but it's got a lot of heart! Liner notes writer and film music journalist Tim Greiving joins your humble host Yavar to talk about Varese Sarabande's new Deluxe Edition of Jerry Goldsmith's beloved score for Rudy. Among the topics of conversation: Tim's personal connection to the score, why he took a less analytical approach to the liner notes, standout moments from the previously unreleased music on the album, Goldsmith's personal affection for this project, and more. Enjoy the show, and stay tuned for another Rudy-themed program in the near future!"

It's a very nice expansion. I just listened to the entire album. There isn't anything on the new album that is "essential", and the original soundtrack album was one of those abbreviated Goldsmith albums that played well, but the new album is simply "more" of the same, and it has a great musical flow. (Yeah, except for the two source cues, which don't fit in well "as music" within the score... but one can easily program them out.) This album is "more" of a good thing.

I never bought the original but wow this is really a terrific score. You can hear how it influenced other composers after as well. I hear some Gump and even HTTyD (mostly the harmonies)

http://www.cinematicsound.net/varese-sarabande-cd-club-rudy-and-the-music-of-jerry-goldsmith/

In today’s program, I’ll be playing for you music from the newest release in Varese Sarabande’s CD Club: RUDY with music by Jerry Goldsmith. This new album was released today featuring an expanded 67-minute running time from the original 37-minute running time back in 1993. The first suite you will hear from this new album will be all previously unreleased cues. Later on in the show, you will hear two classic cuts from the original album; “Take Us Out” and the timeless “The Final Game.”

You’ll also hear music from some of the other Jerry Goldsmith Varese Sarabande CD Club releases. Since the inception of the CD Club back in 1989, Varese has released over 35 Jerry Goldsmith club releases. In today’s program, you’ll hear music from four of those releases including FREUD (1962), THE VANISHING (1993), THE RED PONY (1973) and RAGGADY MAN (1981).

With that, enjoy the show!

I have the original 1993 Varese release.

Is this new release considered complete?

I saw the movie soon after it was released many eons ago, and I can't remember what played over the end credits. Was it the first soundtrack track - the main title?

It is complete & chronological, unlike the 1993 release!

The album opens with the "End Credits (Theme from Rudy)." Apart from that, it's chronological.

Oh yeah, it’s a bit of the same situation as The Omen — *mostly* chronological.

For no reason besides inertia, I hadn't listened to this score for quite a while until this new version came out. I remembered liking it, but otherwise my recollections were vague.

As I listened to this new version, I spent quite a while wondering why my memories of it were so fond. The main theme was pretty, but boy, it just kept coming on over and over again. It had the effect to me of feeling a bit saccharine, which I didn't recall feeling in the past. I knew there was some new music, because I could compare playlists, but it sort of felt like my chicken dinner came with a side of more chicken.

And then, nearly a half-hour into the album, the cue "Tryouts" came on and the whole album perked up. Suddenly, there was energetic writing, and new melodic ideas, and I got excited about this score all over again! From there to the finish, it's really gangbusters.

I say this because – through absolutely no fault of anybody connected with this score or its presentation, living or dead – I feel like this is one where the expansion, and film order, is hurting more than helping. I know, the people have spoken, and this is how these albums are done now. I'm absolutely not complaining! Often, film order helps clarify a musical narrative. But in the case of this particular score, it bunches too many like cues together. There's variation, sure, but to me, not enough for a half-hour of listening. I haven't seen the film in a while, but I'm guessing most of these similar cues are separated by many minutes of scoreless scenes. Of course, no album should emulate that, but it shows why just putting a score in film order does not always adequately replicate the film experience.

Again, I have nothing but respect for the people who put this together! As an album, though, I feel like the old presentation (which had most of this music, anyway) was a better experience.
