Most of the other forums I read use off-the-shelf forum software, or specific sites that host individual forums. This may be something worth looking into, rather than paying to upgrade this "custom" forum. Unless, of course, there ongoing monthly costs for migrating over to third-party hosting, which would eventually supersede the one-off cost of this site's upgrade.

Paying to keep your own forum current is a bit like reinventing the wheel, as those other types of forums already do what has been suggested here. Yes, they may look generic, but it's the posting content that matters. And I think they do offer a degree of customisation to help maintain familiarity (colour themes, logos, etc.).

All those other forums do everything better, and those that I read that don't (i.e. the "custom" ones), I tend to read less often purely because of their various inflexabilities and shortcomings (mainly viewing on an iPad and not offering appropriate page-width adjustments, and thereby ending up with text being too small to read). And one only offers a "dark" theme (light text on dark background), which I can't view for more than a few seconds without having to stop due to eye strain, so I've practically stopped reading it altogether.

EDIT: Invision, vBulletin and xenforo are examples of forum providers that I read. Anything catering for mobile devices (phones, tablets) should be an essential consideration.

For the life of me I can't get simple photos to show up in my posts. Tell me, what am I doing wrong or missing here? I tried each and every code a picture upload website gives me but to no avail.

I use postimages. It's easy. When you go to the site, press button'choose image'. The next thing you see looks like below. Copy n paste ' direct link' on here , between the without http//. If I can do it any idiot can.

Would be nice if the board could offer vital commercial services, such as call girls, international passports and revenge spells.

Reminds me of a line from Gene Rodenberry‘s Genesis II. “I guess humanity is really growing up.” My opinion is unfortunately some aspects of humanity have really not changed in thousands, if ever, years.

Allow the entire thread to be ignored if they were started by somebody on your Ignore list.

It works! I somehow thought I had used this site before but could of course be mistaken... Thanks a lot!

You are already allowed to ignore any thread you wish.

An easy way to publish photos.

Certainly this.

However, any new easier/more direct photos upload process should be considered while preserving the old existent process....otherwise we could loose straight all previous uploaded stills over the years, including all the CUSTOM COVER ART threads content!!

I don't think a process that would allow direct uploading of images to the FSM board would be a realistic proposition, as that would drastically increase the required server space and would increase traffic volume enormously.

Any irony in the fact you posted Spam?

A genuine ignore feature would be nice. Ignoring a poster but then seeing their comment quoted defeats the purpose.

The personal option to set a default font size (it's hard to read on mobile). And in general, improved view mobile-friendly.

Easier embedding (images, YouTube, Spotify).

Delete own posts (to avoid duplicates).

Sort topics by the date it was started.

Highlight unread posts.

Apparently, some people have so many threads they wish to ignore, that finding the few they want to read in the list is an onerous task.

Absolutely at the top of the list should be a better quoting and quote attribution feature.

I hear ya. In fact I'd like to see a feature where ignored poster actually gets a zap of electricity off their keyboard, you know, like the Bond game in Never say never. Lol. wink

I can easily understand why people like the simplicity and familiarity of FSM’s custom design, but I tend to agree with the above suggestion. The cost of maintaining a bespoke / custom forum codebase is only going to increase over time. At some point, it might even become impossible to keep this one going.

I would suspect that all the changes that people have requested in this thread would be readily available in an off the shelf forum. Personally I would suggest Discord which is free from what I understand.

The main problem with Discord is that you can’t import existing conversation into it. Perhaps other forum software allows that? Alternatively, you could just freeze the existing forum and start up a new one.

I would think deleting your own duplicate posts would be unnecessary; isn't it possible for the system to simply remove duplicate posts itself? A detection system like that would also catch and halt mass spamming in progress.

But I would rather keep the forum the way it is than dump it and start over, freeze it and start a new forum, lose all this data and information.

Just a reminder Lukas said, "Improvements that are specific and limited are preferred. Big changes or add-ons are unlikely at this time."

Thus, don't expect something totally new. Improvements would have to be possible within the constraints of the current boards specs and technology.

I think most are just sharing our wish lists and letting Lukas decide what can and can't be done.

Most of us have no idea what the constraints are.
