Are you seriously trying to tell me that, because of the running time, the studio and theaters will be unable to meet the demand for this movie? Because that's what your argument boils down to.

It's simple supply and demand. If the studio and theaters think the demand is that great, trust me, they'll find a way to put it on more screens. (It wouldn't be the first time.) I'm willing to bet that everyone who wants to see this movie will be able to, even on opening weekend. They aren't going to be losing any business because there aren't enough showings. (I haven't seen that happen with any movie since the rise of the multiplex.)

If this movie tanks, it won't be because of the running time.

Go back and READ what was written.

Try and GRASP it for a change.

Replacing Howard Shore was "a horrible thing", but he "didn't click".

According to Empire, this is what Peter Jackson recently said about the rejection of Howard Shore's King Kong score...

the brass a UNIVERSAL didn't like it and the fact that I delivered a 3 HOUR MOVIE and I need them and pay the bills for going overbudget.

PETER: What a score. Howard, I love you!

SUIT "A": Jackson, kill the retro music and bring in something more hip.

PETER: Howard I love you but he pays me!

Replacing Howard Shore was "a horrible thing", but he "didn't click".

Whoa, call it frankness...

I have no doubts Peter Jackson felt really bad while dumping Howard Shore's score, but cutting it clear saying "he didn't click" is somewhat disrespectful and lazy. At this point, I prefer the good ol' and politically correct "creative differences" term.

Probably we'll never know the real story behind all this, so I guess we have to take these comments and treat it for what they are.

The Top Ten reasons Howard Shore's score for King Kong 'didn't click' with Universal!

10) Universal brass to Shore - "When you said you were going to compose ape music, we thought you meant R&B"

9) Universal brass to Jackson "Love Story? I thought this was going to be a story about a giant ape destroying a city! We need to save this with some R&B."

8) Universal brass to Shore - "Howard, we're going to have to let you go... We haven't heard the score yet, but we were shocked when we learned that there was not a single drum machine on the scoring stage."

7) Universal brass to Jackson - "Aren't those funny looking string instruments and blowhorns the same instruments that they used to use in Middle Earth? Tell Shore to get a rhythm section or at least a few synth banks in there or he's fired!"

6) Universal brass to Jackson - "The ending of this movie is just too sad. I'm afraid the music is to blame. Let's get that guy who did Disney's 'Sinbad'. That was a real upper! ((sniff))"

5) Universal brass to Shore - "Aren't you the same guy who did She-Devil and Mrs. Doubtfire? Get off the set, this film is no laughing matter."

4) Universal Brass to Universal Brass - "We received a call from John Ashcroft and he was shocked to see that Shore's name has been attached to a number of films featuring a despicable amount af depravity and even...nudity."

3) Universal Brass to Jackson - "Tell Shore that if he comes to the scoring stage one more day without his shirt tucked in, he's gone."

2) Universal Brass to Shore - "THIS is your music? A bunch of dots and lines on some wierd looking lined paper? That's not music, that's just NONSENSE."

And the number one reason Howard Shore's score for King Kong 'didn't click' with Universal!

1) Universal Brass to Jackson - "The electrodes attached to the first test audience returned no increase in penile girth readings when Naomi Watts was onscreen!"

Oh please, Shore "didn't click" ...! Howard Shore always clicks, show me one score that didn't click.
He delivered in smaller movies and he even delivered in blockbusters (Aviator, Lotr), something very few people had faith in.
Excuse me, if you can nail an 11 hour movie with dozens of thematic threads, a relatively simple love/ thriller movie certainly doesn't push you to your limits, especially because it's directed by the same person.

Well, he didn't click inasfar (is that a word?) as he surely included all kinds of ethnic percussion, and that made those narrow- minded bastards at Universal "worried".
The score certainly had the approval of PJ. No one in his right mind would spend a million on the complete restructuring of a town hall into a scoring stage when he has even the smallest concern about the score not "clicking".

I saw the new Kong trailer today (which has also premiered online) at a NATO/ theatre exhibitor product seminar and it looks fantastic.

Much improved over the previous trailer and we get a spectacular shot of Kong on the Empire State building.

Anybody recognize whose music (Shore's or Newton Howard's) is being used in the new trailer?

The second half of the trailer is scored with Batman Begins' score. Talk about bad a omen ...

How much of Shore's score was recorded before it was rejected? The production video of the recording session has footage of Shore recording the music when the expedition is approaching Skull Island. Did Shore ever get any further?

I don't know why, and I don't know what Shore's score would have sounded like.

But JNH's score is gorgeous. It's amazing how quickly this kind of melodic orchestral score has vanished.

Per Doug Adams on Twitter, 14 Nov 2017:

"Yes, I’ve heard Shore’s KING KONG—as it exists. It was 1/3 recorded and 1/3 mockups, with 1/3 yet to be written. It’s gorgeous...surprisingly gentle and lyrical. I think it’ll be released someday, but isn’t on the immediate horizon."

Thanks. It would be interesting if the 2/3 could be re-recorded though probably too expensive and complicated (legally).

I wonder if there are mock up cues that could fill in the gaps? I know, it's not the same as an orchestral, but it's better than missing one third of the score.

Well, as Doug says, there ARE mock-ups for 1/3 of the score. (Whether these mock-ups would become a part of a conjectural release is a separate question.) The remaining 1/3 was not yet written, let alone mocked up. I suppose it's not inconceivable that Shore could write and record additional material to flesh things out, but I have no idea how likely that might be.

It would be interesting to find out actually where the gaps would be. Did Shore recorded the first 1/3 of the film or do the 60 odd minutes of score represent the major scenes? I guess this would sell very well if you could record the 2/3 of the score. Releasing the 60 odd minutes of music would be a lot easier than doing the same for Yared's Troy.
