When the FSM drops, I'll probably pick up the blu-ray as well as I'm looking forward to seeing the new remastered edition.

2001: A Space Odyssey t Composers: Various

Winner – BAFTA for Best Soundtrack

While the score is always integral to its film, director Stanley Kubrick elevated music from soundtrack to character in his 1968 masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Kubrick jettisoned much of the film’s dialogue and instead used works from core classical repertoire to illustrate mood and character motivation as well as to highlight the film’s motifs.

Kubrick created a masterful marriage of the sound and the visual, but perhaps these three moments are the most striking and memorable:

* Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra, which evokes the film’s major theme of transition, from the startling opening scene to the ape’s evolution, through man’s ultimate transformation to star-child
* Setting the choreography of the spaceship docking sequence to Johann Strauss’ The Blue Danube waltz
* Hal 9000’s rendition of “Daisy Bell”, a heartbreaking scene which spurs the viewer to question what makes one human, what makes one machine?

This version of the soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey also includes modernist composer György Ligeti’s Requiem, Lux Aeterna and Jupiter and Beyond, Adagio from Aram Khachaturian’s Gayane Ballet Suite and the complete Hal 9000 dialogue montage.

Blow-Up t Composer: Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock’s Swingin’ 60s Score

Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni called upon jazz-pianist Herbie Hancock to compose and perform the score for his first English-language film, Blow-Up. Hancock is not only one of the greatest active jazz musicians, but one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting the freer stylistic elements of jazz. His compositions are the perfect accompaniment to Antonioni’s tale of a photographer’s accidental and incidental involvement with a murder, set in swinging 60s London.

This edition of Blow-Up: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features Hancock’s score, songs from The Yardbirds and Lovin’ Spoonful, and outtakes.

Casablanca t Composer: Max Steiner

Academy Award® Nomination – Best Original Score

Play it again. Play…’As Time Goes By’”. And so Ingrid Bergman’s heroine Ilsa pleads with Dooley Wilson’s Sam to whisk her back to the memories of her halcyon romance with Humphrey Bogart’s Rick. This edition of Casablanca: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features Max Steiner’s romantic, epic score, including the stirring “La Marseillaise”/“Die Wacht am Rhein” battle medley, the classic songs “Knock on Wood and “It Had to be You” and, of course, the AFI’s #2 Movie Song of All Time, “As Time Goes By”.

Doctor Zhivago t Composer: Maurice Jarre

Academy Award® & Grammy® Winner for Best Original Score

Doctor Zhivago, David Lean’s passionate adaptation of Boris Pasternak’s novel on love and war in Russia remains of the most beloved films of the 20th century. Composer Maurice Jarre won both the Oscar® and Grammy® awards for Best Score for this film, and “Lara’s Theme” remains one of the most famous in cinematic history.

This edition of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features the complete score, outtakes and three arrangements of Lara’s Theme (the Jazz, Rock ‘n Roll and Swing versions)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas; Horton Hears a Who t Composers: Albert Hague; Eugene Poddany; Lyrics: Dr. Seuss

Two Enduring Children’s Classics

Dr. Seuss’ holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas meets his Horton Hears a Who! on this soundtrack recording. Featuring the scores to both television specials and songs with lyrics by Seuss, including “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”.

How the West Was Won t Composer: Alfred Newman

#25 – AFI’s List of Top 100 Film Scores

9-time Oscar® winning composer, Alfred Newman was nominated for his score to this 1962 Epic MGM Western. Told in five parts by directors John Ford, Henry Hathaway, George Marshall and an un-credited Richard Thorpe, How the West Was Won is the story four generations of a family and their western migration from New York to the Pacific

Featuring an all-star cast including John Wayne, Walter Brennan, Henry Fonda and Gregory Peck to name just a few, the film won three Academy Awards®, and in 1997, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

This 2-CD edition of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features the complete score plus outtakes, demos and extended versions of some of the tracks.

King Kong (1933) t Composer: Max Steiner

#13 – AFI Top 100 Film Scores

The groundbreaking 1933 film King Kong gave movie lovers not only one of their most enduring protagonists, but helped change the way Hollywood used music in film. Composer Max Steiner’s ability to integrate the musical story with the visual was revolutionary. The score is considered one of the most important in cinematic history, as following the film’s release,

a soundtrack transformed from being a mere assemblage of stock pieces into an art form of it’s own. Steiner, who went on to win three Academy Awards® and receive an additional 18 nominations, was innovative in his creation of individual character leitmotifs and through his ability to move from the moody to the whimsical to the grandiose and bombastic as the story called.

Lolita t Composers: Nelson Riddle; Bob Harris

“How did they ever make a movie of Lolita?”

The score to Stanley Kubrick’s influential Lolita, the film based on the classic Vladimir Nabokov novel, walks the same tight-rope as the film, teetering and flitting between the ominous and the innocent. This score, by noted bandleader, arranger and orchestrator Nelson Riddle, is a kitschy, quirky postcard representative of its time.

North by Northwest t Composer: Bernard Herrmann

Herrmann’s Complete, Captivation Score

Bernard Herrmann’s score to Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest is a dazzling musical adventure that captures the elements of chase, suspense and romance of this classic film. The listener is swept up with Cary Grant on his road trip of dangerous misadventure – chased to breakneck triple time tempos and blaring winds, swallowed by the penetrating, repetitive rhythm of the suspense themes and as enraptured as Grant and Eva Marie Saint were through the slow, throbbing strings of the love scenes.

This 2 CD set features the complete score by the Academy Award® winning composer Herrmann.

Poltergeist t Composer: Jerry Goldsmith

Academy Award® Nomination – Best Original Score

Oscar® winning composer Jerry Goldsmith’s prodigious talents for scoring for the frightening and macabre are on grand form in his soundtrack to Poltergeist. From gentle, homely melodies to grisly, atonal movements, Goldsmith’s music illustrates the deep affection, decent into terror and ultimate triumph of the Freeling Family.

The Unsinkable Molly Brown t Composer: Meredith Wilson

Academy Award® Nomination – Best Original Score

Debbie Reynolds steps into the dancing shoes of The Unsinkable Molly Brown in this vibrant musical from 1964. The film, based on the Broadway hit of the same name, is the musical retelling of the life of the daring, self-made activist and socialite Margaret Brown (aka Molly) , who survived the sinking of the Titanic.

This Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features the complete score and songs by Meredith Wilson including “Belly Up to the Bar, Boys”, “I Ain’t Down Yet”, “Colorado, My Home” and “I’ll Never Say No”.

Victor Victoria t Composer: Henry Mancini; Lyricist: Leslie Bricusse

Academy Award® Winner – Best Music. Original Song Score

Julie Andrews stars in Blake Edwards’ musical comedy Victor Victoria as “A woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman”. The delicious score and original songs by composer Henry Mancini and lyricist Leslie Bricusse won the 1983 Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song Score. Victor Victoria also features memorable performances by James Garner, Robert Preston and Leslie Ann Warren.

This 2 CD reissue of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack includes the full score and songs including “Cherry Ripe”, the sultry “Le Jazz Hot”, “Gay Paree” and the show-stopping “Crazy World” as well as previously unreleased music cues from Manicini’s award winning score and a rehearsal version of “Shady Lady from Seville”

The Wizard of Oz t Composer: Herbert Storthart t Songs by: Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg

Academy Award® Winner – Best Score and Best Song

What other movie soundtrack has so captured the hearts of its audience and remained such a touchstone in the cultural consciousness of so many generations of dreamers? This 2-CD special edition of this indelible soundtrack features the complete score and all of the songs including “Ding, Dong! The Witch is Dead”, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”, “If I Only Had a Brain”, “We’re Off to See the Wizard” and Judy Garland’s immortal recording of the AFI’s ‘1 Movie Song of All Time, “Over the Rainbow”. This collection also features extended versions of “If I Were King of the Forest” and “Delirious Escape” and the outtakes of “Ding Dong! Emerald City” and “Jitterbug”

Zabriskie Point t Composer: Various

Featuring Music by Pink Floyd & The Grateful Dead

Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1970 film Zabriskie Point was his second English language film (following Blow-Up) and depicted American Counter-culturalism of the late 1960s. The film was one of the first to use songs from various contemporary artists in addition to original music written for the film by Jerry Garcia and Pink Floyd.

This 2 CD edition of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack features songs by Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Patti Page, The Youngbloods, and Kaleidoscope as well as eight outtakes from Floyd and The Dead.

You would think that NxNW 2CD thing was a mistake. How much more music could you force on this to make it 2CDs?

Well if they went through and remastered them and added some outtakes or alternates, I could see 2 discs.

I would imagine that the releases are just reissues of what has already been released, although the press release mentions remastered and alternate tracks for the all the discs.

I was hoping that since FSM was revisiting Poltergeist, the same could be done for NBNW.

Very likely to be a mistake. There never was a 2 CD set of "Victor/Victoria" as well.

As said previously, I'd be glad if the three iTunes-only titles would be within the batch. I highly doubt it, though.

Me too, but much more so for Andre Previn's magnum opus, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse which doesn't just need better sound quality like NBNW but is actually missing a lot of great music!

So, here we go again:

http://www.amazon.de/Unsichtbare-Dritte-Ost-Various/dp/B003647BQI/

Nothing new - if you ask me. It's almost an insult that the major labels keep re-issuing these, although the drawbacks have been known for a long time. But then again, it's all they seem to do these days. Fortunately, we have speciality labels who do it right...

The point is that these are being released in Europe...... for the first time....... and at budget prices.

Not exactly. Some are for the first time. Most of them have been available in two different configurations (first through EMI, later through WEA) - some even more if you include export deals US Warner had with some European distributors and out-of-copyright releases.
I have yet to check if there are any difference between the US and the correspondig EU pressings. I always had the impression that some of the EMI sounded worse. I'll check back...

The Wizard of Oz won't be a 2 CD-set like the press release and www.jpc.de say. www.jpc.de has posted the artwork and tracklist for this title.

http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/Harold-Arlen-Wizard-Of-Oz-The/hnum/1527146

I guess Gone with the Wind and Ben-Hur won't be 2 CD-sets either, but no information is available for these titles. I don't know if How the West Was Won will be a 1 CD-set or 2 CD-set. I guess it's a 2 CD-set as there was never a 1 CD-set released by Rhino for this title, while there was a 1 CD-set available for The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind and Ben-Hur with highlights.

I have both the one & two CD sets for Ben-Hur. I'm very happy to have the two CD set, but I find it's the single CD that I tend to listen to.

Prices for Ben-Hur, Gone With the Wind and How The West Was Won are higher so it looks like they are probably 2 disc sets.

I'm surprised that "Ben-Hur" is among the titles at all. Hasn't there been some struggle between Warner and EMI over this title? The R2 DVD even comes without the isolated score track. Maybe this has been resolved as the original "Ben-Hur" recordings are now in the public domain...

The Sony album seems to be already available here at a very low price:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003647BOK/ref=oss_product

I'm a little bit surprised to see it so early... well, as I've never had the chance to get my hand on the Rhino OOP CD, I've just placed an order. I understand that it may sound a little silly as FSM is going to re-release it in a complete, presumably magnificent edition... and that I may well buy it too when it gets out. roll eyes

Well, it's listed as brand new, which would be a bit odd for the original release. Besides, have a look at the back cover...

Yeah ... looks like it's just the Rhino packaging with Sony logos. My advice: wait for the FSM.

I'll tell you more about it when it arrives.
I should add it's been since there was the FSM announcement on this forum that I've told myself: "well, no use to buy the Sony re-release then, I'll wait and buy the FSM CD". THAT's funny. I guess the price was too attractive. big grin
