How does the Intrada GREAT ESCAPE sound compared to the Ryko version?

A) The Ryko has reversed channels and is interrupted/spoilt by the dialogue tracks.

B) The Intrada sounds better than every other previously released version of The Great Escape.

I know 'cos I've had 'em all.

I honestly can't believe how utterly fantabulous!!!!! this sounds.

If you only own the Ryko version, you owe it to yourself to get the new Intrada, after all it's only (approx) the same price as the Ryko, plus the fact you get the complete score thrown in for nothing!!!!!

CHRIS RIMMER:

Thanks for the info. I have the Ryko and was thinking about buying the Intrada but wasn't sure if it was worth the money. t looks like I'll get the Intrada, too.

I would totally agree with my friend Chris here. Having purchased this though several album and cd incarnations, this really is great.

I have no real problem with the Varese edition except maybe the way some of the tracks were 'split' which can cause the music to jar on certain cd players. Some of these have been combined by Intrada as previously mentioned. The 3rd cd (score album) as Chris rightly says has never sounded better. I have enjoyed listening to this so much over the weekend and my family and I actually sat down & watched the film Sunday afternoon.

I would all Elmer and Great Escape fans to pick this up even if you already have previous versions.

I've never heard of ANY CD players that have problems with tracks split in the middle of the music, from the earliest ones. Mp3 players, yes, but that's an issue with the Mp3 format.

I received the CD yesterday and I listened to it last evening. I couldn't get the previous Varese edition so you can imagine my emotion ! I can say I only knew top of the iceberg !

What are your favorite tracks ?

Until now mine was - apart of course the main theme - Various Troubles but now... I'm delighted lost !!! I'm very impressed, for example, by the STUNNING train approaching theme in At the Station ! And when it gets linked with the motorcycle theme I would say - as Cooler after tasting a cup of "whisky" - : WOAOO!!!

I'm even keen on reconsider Road's End , the only track I wasn't found of... It sounded too dissonant regarding the global tonality of the album. But since now we get cues like the striking Restless Men it sounds to me much better. And the rendering - tempo, etc - is really effective (efficient ?), which was not the case in the album (the rendering sounded "lazy"...)

And it's very intriguing to notice the use of what seems to be an electronic instrument in Foul Up or On the road . Since the Varèse liner notes are maybe more "generous" - no offence Intrada ! - I could use some info...

And could someone tell me if, in the movie, Cooler's escape after his friend got one is a scored or an unscored short sequence ? I was pretty sure it was briefly scored...

I was listening to this for the first time yesterday, on my Ipod in lossless encoded form, and it just sounds like it was recorded yesterday. What a great job.

For what it's worth, the way that Intrada have split the presentation over three discs makes perfect sense to me.

I hope someone will redo Ghostbusters now!

Looks like Intrada's first batch of this title is gone; "Back in stock in 2 weeks".

A nice indication that this is selling!

And the price is ridiculously low for this set!

Chris, thanks for the comparison. Has anyone A/Bd this in the sense of making sure there isn't anything missing from the Intrada that was on the Varese Club? Many thanks!

Identical content, slight order change (bonus track put in film sequence), and combining a few multiple cue sets into single tracks. Plus better sound.

As much as I like this score, nothing would make me happier than a "full monty" treatment by Intrada of Bernstein's magnificent score for KINGS OF THE SUN.

I agree, but I think it was pretty thoroughly discussed and clearly established at the time the "Bernstein Box" (which includes EB's rerecording of KINGS OF THE SUN) was released by FSM that the original session tapes are MIA.

Yes slightly...I have ALL three cd's.
The Varese club edition does NOT have 'Yankee Doodle' track listed!
They all sound pretty good so I'm alternating discs>>!

I have heard the LP arrangement (on CD) and an unmentionable of this score, but the Intrada release was the perfect opportunity for me to add it to my collection.

Oh, my, goodness. THIS is awesome, especially for the price.

It will be getting a lot of play from me.

As I remember (I can't be bothered to get the discs out) Yankee Doodle is an unlisted extra at the end of one of the discs on the Varese set.

Hope DOES spring eternal, though. Like some other scores whose masters have recently been unearthed, I keep hoping that they'll find the RTR's for this somewhere. I've heard snippets of the re-recorded score included in the "Bernstein Box," and although it's close, it's just not the same as the original studio recordings.

Which is why it's so ironic that with other scores - Goldsmith's OUR MAN FLINT, for example - I actually PREFERRED the studio re-recordings to the original sessions for the movie. Probably because I heard and fell in love with the vinyl version of that particular score way before I ever saw the movie!
